Title: Why do guests look at member profiles?
Post by: Jen on November 20, 2007, 11:27:01 AM
I notice from time to time that guests like to look at member profiles. Once or twice I've seen a guest look at my profile then a few minutes later, a new forum member will join the forum and immediately PM me about joining the RPG. Other than those folks, I wonder what they're checking out. Just curious. What do you guys think? If you're a guest, feel free...I'm just wondering. Oh and join up and let me know why.  :D

Yeah I always notice guest checking out members profiles. And I don't have a clue why they would do that. It's just one of those forums mysteries.

I never even knew that.  I think I can turn that option off for guests.  If you two think I should do that let me know.

I know I joined only after finding out that Rico and Kenny were two of the most devastatingly handsome men EVER.  It was nice to know I wasn't alone.  ;D

Anyway...you ask a fair question Jen.  I don;t I have ever looked at anyones profile other than my own...and thats only when I wanna change my avatar or something.  I always thought I got a pretty good sense of everyones personality from their posts.

I've used it to send people PM's. I've exchanged emails with a few folks here (with their permission) and sometimes those addresses are posted in their profile. Which makes me wonder if that's why some guests are gong there. Maybe a couple are spammers?

I don't want to be inaccessible to folks wanting to join the RPG...so I don't know for sure if I want it blocked. Though I have to admit that on occasion it has freaked me out to see a guest looking at that info. I guess it's just because I don't know who it is or why they're looking.

lol you are so modest! (j/k) ;)

Seriously; some of the guests could be trying to find out as much about the forum membership as possible without taking the time to look into the forum and read some posts.

Before I try to join a forum, I like to get an idea of what the people are like, and what the average age is.  No offense to the younger members, but I personally don't like the vibe on a lot of forums whose membership is mostly kids ("you got pwnd, n00b" and all that junk).  Maybe the peeping-toms feel the same way, but are too lazy to just read some posts.  That's my guess, anyway.

Well, my thing is to NEVER put my email as accessible by the public.  So that means you have to PM me. Otherwise, I don't believe there is anything that they should not be able to see.  I'm personally fine with them looking.  But good luck finding anything out ;)

If you add your email address to your profile, you can be notified when a post you are watching is replied to... comes in handy in the RPG, especially since I'm moderator.

No, thats not what I meant, I meant, that when I add my email, I don't allow the public to see it.  That way they have to PM me to contact me.  I also add notify to many things that I post.

I don't even know how you can check to see if someone's checking out your profile. . .there's nothing much to see in mine anyway.

Click on "Friends Online" above the list of forum members who are surfing the boards. You can see what those folks are reading and join them in that discussion.

I like checking out the profile for links to people's websites and other information. It does feel kind of weird at times to see people looking at it.  But, if I didn't want the information out, I wouldn't post it. :)
