Title: Was the internet built on star Trek and dirty pictures?
Post by: space_invader64 on October 14, 2007, 07:26:47 PM
Rick Berman said on the season 2 TNG dvd that the internet exploded early on with porn and star trek sites.  What do you think?

I started surfing in 1995 and there were I don't remember that many fan sites.  As for the other, I don't remember comming across many of those.

I know around that time that TNG had just finished, DS9 was big and Voyager was getting started, the Star Wars Special Edition was comming and there was scifi merch everywhere.

I don't mind thinking that Star Trek built the internet, but I would hope that the other only played a small part.

I remember in the early 1990's when I first started getting into home PC's and going online with an old, very slow modem.  Most of the BBS (Bulletin board services) I visited were involving Trek or other Sci-Fi.  And there were many out there.  I'd say to this day that Star Trek (and Star Wars) make up a huge chunk of internet space.  Even going further back I remember staying after school in high school to play on the main frame they had.  The computer could play a text Star Trek like game.  Lots of fun, but oh so primitive as compared to things today.

I was a member of The Neutral Zone BBS and The Next Generation BBS back in Montreal. I still remember the phone numbers!

No.  I think it was called something like Space Combat or Space Sim or something simple like that.  Basically you entered text or where you wanted to go, looked for enemies and blasted them.

Nice. I was on several BBSes back in the day and we are all into the turn based text games. Trade Wars was one of them, but this was back when a 2,400 bps modem was state of the art.

I actually used to play a Star Trek mod of Solar Realms Elite called Solar Trek Realms. Basically it was the exact same game but all your unites were renamed in the Star Trek universe.

I played this msdos text based star trek game called star trak.  It was very borring.  It gave you choices like

1 go to warp
2 fire phasers
3 scan sector

and so on.  I couldn't stand to play it very long.

The old Infocom games?  First thing I remember with the internet was AOL.  Oh man, it was awful back then.   All I thunk back then "need faster connection - must play deathmatch DOOM"

Was the internet built on dirty pictures?  I think it had its part.  But as (I think) the majority of those getting on where under 18, I have high doubts that it was built on that.  Star Trek certainly had its influence on it.  I think there was a 3rd factor but I cannot remember now.

Oh and nowadays?  World of Warcraft is like 1/4 the internet.  Face it, it is WAY too popular :)
