A pro/fan TREK film in three parts done by Tim Russ (Tuvok from Voyager).  Check the link above for the first part tomorrow.

Really more a professional film.  Almost everyone involved in it is a professional actor, film maker, production person, etc.  Amy (Chrystabel here on the forums) knows much more since she got to play an extra or walk on part.  I'm going to try and setup an interview with her soon about this project.

It's looking so cool!  Loved the Balok thing and the first three minutes.  And look who I spotted in one of the behind the scenes clips.  Our very own Chrystabel (Amy) here on the forums made up as a Vulcan.  Pretty cool Amy!

Thanks, Rico!  Tristan totally surprised me by using that clip in his behind the scenes music video.  I'll be excited when they release the actual Electric Crush video.  Those guys were AWESOME!  I'm heading to Chicago this weekend for my birthday--my mom and sister are going to Chicago Shakespeare's Troilus and Cressida with me!  LOL...I like to torture my family on my b-day!  Anyway, one of my goals on the plane trips is to look over my notes from the LA shoot and get some new content up on the ST:OG&M website.  I'll let you know when it is up, because that might be a good time to do an interview.

P.S.  Loved the bit of video with the candy Dot on the helm console.  Priceless!

There has been another new Star Trek film in the works for a while now- A fan film called Of Gods And Men.  This film features many familiar faces from the TOS and TNG eras, including Walter Koenig, Nichelle Nicols, Tim Russ, Alen Ruck (Capt. Harriman from Star Trek: Generations), J.G. Hertzler (Martok from DS9), Chase Masterson (also from DS9), and others.  Here is a short trailer-

...and a clip from the first act-

Anyone out there heard of this?

Yeah we have been talking about this for a while... there is another thread about this under the Star Trek section. I'm going to merge these two topics.

It's a separate production, but still of high quality.  The biggest difference seems to be Tim Russ recruited a lot of Trek actors to be in the "Of Gods and Men" production.

I'm really looking forward to the completion of this mini-series!

Yeah; I dig the fact that we see some familiar faces in this.:)  I know that this and New Voyages are considered "non-cannon", but seeing actors reprising their Trek roles helps lend the films a sense of validity.

My knowledge of Of Gods And Men is kind of limited, but it seems as though the alternate universe in this film is an entirely separate reality from the canon Mirror Universe.    Mirror Universe Mk. II?

Star Trek: Of Gods and Men — Part 1 Tomorrow

The Tim Russ online 3-part miniseries "Star Trek: Of Gods and Men" (STOGM) will see its Part One premiere take place in just 1 day on December 22, 2007 at 5:01PM EST.

This unique look at the Star Trek universe is directed by Russ, famous for his role as the Vulcan Tukok on "Star Trek: Voyager," which ran for seven years.

STOGM also stars a whole array of fine actors, most from past Star Trek series' or movies including legends like Walter Koenig, Nichelle Nichols, Grace Lee Whitney and Lawrence Montaigne from classic Trek. Other Trek stars include Alan Ruck from "Star Trek VII: Generations," Ethan Phillips (ST: VOY), Gary Graham (ST: ENT), Garrett Wang (ST: VOY), Chase Masterson (ST: DS9), Cirroc Lofton (ST: DS9), J.G. Hertzler (Various Trek shows), Jack Donner (ST: ENT) and three special guests from "Star Trek New Voyages" have roles as well — James Cawley, Jeffery Quinn and John Carrigan.

The events of STOGM take place about 12 years after James T. Kirk goes missing in the Nexus. It's now forty years after their first mission on the old USS NCC-1701 Enterprise and Chekov, Uhura, and former captain of the USS Enterprise B, John Harriman, are once again joined together for the dedication of a special new vessel. Reminicent of the last time Harriman met with those classic officers from Starfleet's past, their ship's christening is curtailed after receiving a distress call from an all-too-familiar planet, where they meet up with an almost-forgotten face, and in an instant something happens that presses the three friends to embark on a mission that will forever change their lives and the fate of the universe.

And what of the other legendary crew members of classic Trek? Captain Spock and Doctor McCoy have spent the last several years on Khitomer, continuing their work to establish peace between the Federation and the Klingon Empire, though it is wondered if they will ever establish peace between themselves. Captain Hikaru Sulu and his Excelsior crew are on an extended mission beyond the outer reaches of the Alpha Quadrant.

"Star Trek: Of Gods and Men," is an original production from Tim Russ, produced by Sky Conway and story written by Ethan H. Calk, Sky Douglas Conway and Jack Treviño.

Just checked out part one.  Pretty interesting...

I liked the way canon characters and events were used to move the story along.  I got a little kick out of the return of a central character form one of the TOS episodes.   ;)

Curious to see what you all thought of it...

It was ok..hoping for more. Cool to see Charlie X. The F/X were not so good and at full screen it wasn't very good quality. James Crowley or whatever still sucks as an actor.
Title: Re: Star Trek: Of Gods And Men
Post by: Rico on December 22, 2007, 07:48:41 PM
I enjoyed it.  Good first part.  It was nice to see some of the original Trek actors get some nice screen time.  Didn't quite have the polish that New Voyages has worked up to, but this is new for them.  Interesting how slipping through the Guardian seemed to alter things even for those on the planet.  Looking forward to parts one and two.

P.S.  Bryan, the reason for the low quality especially when you blow up the image is this video is highly compressed so they can stream it using Flash.  I would suggest people do not blow the picture up to view it.

Post by: Ktrek on December 22, 2007, 10:54:23 PM
I agree with you Rico that New Voyages is actually more "polished". Kind of surprising since everyone involved in this project have been in the film industry for years. Even New Voyages sfx are better than this. I enjoyed the story for what it is and I'll watch the other two parts to see where they take it. The best part was seeing so many of the Trek stars interacting in one show.

Is this the same actor from The City On The Edge Of Forever?  Just wondering...

Interesting how slipping through the Guardian seemed to alter things even for those on the planet.

Good catch; I missed that.

If I remember correctly, in the original episode, after McCoy jumps through the portal, the away team notices that the Enterprise (and I guess, the Federation) no longer exist- due to the changes in the time line.  But they remain unaffected.

I wonder if the difference in this new scenario is the result of an oversight on the part of the writers, or if it is intentional, and will be explained later?
Title: Re: Star Trek: Of Gods And Men - tiny spoilers
Post by: Rico on December 23, 2007, 07:36:57 AM
There is another idea I thought of.  Since they don't show the people really on the Guardian planet much after Charlie goes in, we might just be seeing the alternate timeline people.  Like Uhura is on Vulcan and married now, etc.  Perhaps in parts 2 & 3 that will be explained more.  Because I'm guessing the people on the Guardian planet will have to go through the portal and fix what Charlie changed.

P.S.  It's not the same actor playing Charlie X (Evans) by the way.

It was interesting enough, good to see some of the Trek Actors from the past and pick out what roles they were playing. You can really tell the difference between professional and non professional actors, as the professional actors seem to come across much more natural.

I thought they were releasing a different type of episode with zombies and such.  Talk about the alternative universe wasn't in their preview.  Am I wrong?  Otherwise, a good episode, the video quality was poor but I expected it as it was being streamed.  Great acting and great script equals a very good show.

Ok, I rewatched the "preview" at the end of their last one "World Enough Time" and the preview is much different from the show that they are releasing so I'm a bit confused here...did they just scrap the entire story for a new one?  Or does Part 2 include what they showed...Somehow I doubt that.

Ok, no there were no zombies, but they certainly have something going on in that preview.

Tim, you are confusing two different groups of movie makers.  The Star Trek New Voyages people did NOT do "Of Gods and Men."  They are different productions.  James Cawley (who plays Kirk in New Voyages) does have a part in "Of Gods and Men" so I can understand your confusion.  But these are different groups of people doing these.  The preview you saw at the end of the Sulu episode is for the next New Voyages production, "Blood and Fire" due out in 2008.  Hope this helps clear this up some for you.

I'm so glad part 1 is finally out.  I'm a little bummed that you only see my huge nose for a fraction of a second...and that they added a voice that wasn't mine...but I have a close-up in part 3, so I guess I'll live.  LOL!

Seriously, I really enjoyed part 1.  I've been reading some of the questions on the OG&M board, and I think that people will understand once they see the entire episode.  I was fortunate enough to read the script while I was in LA, so I know what's coming!  And I'm STILL not telling!

Rico,

I would love to share my behind-the-scenes stories with you after all three parts are released.  I also have some great photos that haven't been released anywhere else, either.  We can add those to the show notes if you would like.

We did film at Vasquez Rocks...it was a REALLY hot day!  They didn't let me know where we were going (everything was hush-hush during the shoot), so I wasn't fully prepared for being out in the sun.  Luckily there was a fireman on duty who gave me a hat and umbrella...unfortunately, I set the umbrella down while taking photos and someone stepped on it and broke it.  Yikes!  It was pretty embarrassing.   :ohwell

Have a Merry Christmas!

The first part was ok... something to watch, but I guess my expectations were a little high.  Also, the political commentary within the plot got a little more heavy than some of the more modern trek shows.  Anyway... I look forward to seeing the next one as long as it doesn't get pushed back like the first one was.

I just watched part II (after re-watching part I to refresh the memory) and I now feel like those old-times boys, that went to a theater and watched a movie that was just an episode, a part of a story, that would end up in a "cliffhanger" - and they knew they would have to wait months for the next part.

In fact, I think it is worse for us, because we are accustomed by now to near-real-time, all-over-the-world delivery of goods... So months of wait really suck!

But all this suffering is only due to the fact that the movie is good and is better in this second chapter than in the first... So...  kudos to the producers for making us suffer so much!!  :(

I just watched Part 2 and was HUGELY disappointed. I just don't understand how they have such great acting talent in this cast and manage to make this so bad? The dialogue if awful and the effects are pathetic compared to what N.V. does. I mean these are good actors! There are so many terrible, cliche lines of dialogue it's distracting! I  really liked the last episode of N.V. and thought this would be up to that standard.

As for why its sooo bad, I can't figure out what in the world the point was for making this 2 parter.  I'm amazed the actors put up with everything they had.  Its all....dumb.

I hate to say anything bad about anything Trek, but this show...

I tried to watch part 2, and I couldn't  finish it.  There were moments when I actually found myself cringing in discomfort.  Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the fact that these guys are doing this for free, but come on...

Some of the acting was just painful to watch.  And the effects...  I'm having trouble getting the "cardboard wrapped in cellophane" set piece from the wall of the turbolift out of my head...

Maybe I'm just spoiled by the fact that I've seen all of these characters in professionally produced Trek features.  I don't know...

I got that e-mail too. Haven't bothered to watch it yet, still VERY disappointed with this...

For a sneak peek, it certainly shows a lot....

Actually, my opinion has lightened on the show.  Its pretty good.  Not great, but not bad either.

King, it's the full thing. By sneak peek, they mean you get to see it before the release date.

OK, I watched it. Better than the other 2, acting was better, script was ok, effects were still bad BUT I did like all the new ship designs and the various nods to Franz Joseph designs. Was cool to see Gary Mitchell and Grace Lee. Still as a whole, this could have been so much more considering the talent.

I've seen the ship designs before.  Some however were considered "bad" designs via-Roddenberry.  He only approved of 2/4 warp nacelle drives.  1/3 were bad juju.  However, they are unique.  :)

I just got done watching all three.  It was a good story, and it was fun to see everyone.  Not the most amazing thing I've seen, but I applaud their efforts.

Thats what I meant by the nod to Franz Joseph who penned the Star Trek Technical Manual back in the early '70's. He came up with the 3 nacelle Dreadnaught design and I also saw some of his Scout and Tug configurations as well.

Bryan - I think some of us "old school" fans are the few that recognize those designs.  But it was cool to see them.  I enjoyed the entire thing.  A bit weak here and there but I applaud their efforts, especially on including so many Trek and other SF actors.  Did everyone recognize the old "Boomer" from the first Galactica series?  Lots of little touches like that.  Good times!

I watched the whole thing yesterday.   It was OK.

I confess the Kirk glorification in Star Trek kind of annoys me so the universe changing because Kirk wasn't there rubbed me the wrong way.

The funniest thing was Captain Uhura refusing to take her seat at communications knowing that Nichelle Nichols almost quit Star Trek because the role was so limiting and MLK talked her out of it.

It was nice to see Uhura and Chekov back in the saddle again.

Of course seeing "that planet" destroyed was a hoot.

The computer graphics were somewhat cheezy so I just rate it as OK.

The glowing eyes were better in the original show than they were in this thing.

Overall, it is a tad weak, but I've lessened my harsh opinion about it.  Its a decent flick, but I will admit, that the next time someone says "Kirk to save the universe" like that again I'll knock their heads off. ;)  Its old and overused.  BUT, start saying some Picard stuff and I won't.  :) :) :)

heh heh

It was an okay movie, it wasn't no Wrath of Khan.  It was good to so many Trek actors take part in this movie.  It would have been really nice if they gotten Robert Walker to reprise his role of Charles Evans.  But, you can't have everything.
