Impatiently waiting for autumn.

the rumour mill suggests that Moffatt wants to do a bit of "shaking things up" with the new Doctor. Should be fun.

LOL He's already shaken things up quite a bit with the casting.  I'm personally looking forward to it.  It's great to see a Doctor who looks grown up.

@Bromptonboy: if you just need to catch up to current events, and don't mind skipping a few bits between where you are and what's left, you can watch Asylum of the Daleks, The Snowmen, and everything from The Bells of St. John onward. About ten episodes, and it shouldn't spoil anything significant.   Anyone care to double check that, in case I forgot something?

I think he should at least watch the Tennant specials and then the Eleventh Hour and move on from there...Some fairly important stuff there.

Well it's a new Dr so in essence you could just start with Capaldi and enjoy having him as your first Dr. Then go back and catch up. I don't go with this you have to start with Eccleston or Tennant because if you say that then rightly you should go back to Hartnell lol and the. You have 50 years of catching up.
I'd just wait till August and start a new with Capaldi.

Well, I was an old fan, and have seen most of the Pertwee and Baker episodes (dropping it after Baker), and I have been catching up on the new series, and just making it into the 4th season (I got derailed in my catch-up effort by House of Cards US and UK editions).

I liked it quite a bit but I will say the overall episode didn't grab me as much as the first episodes of Smith or Tennant. Story seemed a little weak and maybe too long. Peter Capaldi seems to be a good choice but I want to see more.

I am afraid it was weak in all areas, and seemed to spend the whole episode apologizing for not being Matt Smith
Title: Re: Doctor Who. The Peter Capaldi Series.
Post by: Rico on September 01, 2014, 05:48:27 AM
I have to say I found the second episode a bit "meh" too.  I like Peter Capaldi as the new Doctor but I'm not finding these stories very compelling or interesting so far.  No real surprises.  Still enjoying the show to a degree, but something seems to be missing - some spark or something.  I do like the moments with Clara and the Doctor.  Anyway, we will see how it goes.

I finally watched the first episode of the new season.  It was ok.  I hadn't caught up with the older episodes yet, so I didn't know who the a few of the characters were (had to look them up).
I like the new doctor, but it seemed to me he was mumbling quite a bit.  I'll keep watching.

I'm really enjoying the new doctor and the change in direction that they are going through. I think that it works because regeneration is having actual consequences. It isn't just a new face and some personality changes, it's the Doctor coming back after he should have been dead. It's a companion that has to deal with a Doctor who isn't having a end of life crisis and trying to be younger than he is. Capaldi carries the weight of a 2,000 year old time lord very well and I like what he's doing with it. I like how it's not just about how his companions see him, but how he sees himself and his enemies see him as well.

I'm pretty ok with Capaldi as the new Doctor. I'm just finding the scripts and stories a bit lacking so far.

The DALEK episode was the best new Who episode ive seen in a long time. Capaldis opening lines making her say please was brilliant.
Clara becoming more useful as well is a welcome change.

Robot of Sherwood.
Well what a fun episode, lovely tongue in cheek story and Capaldi pulling a blinder as the more impatient (and not knowing everything) Doctor. Lovely cameo (of sorts) from the second Dr Patrick Troughton (who saw it?)

I quite like these episodes and I think this was the best out of the three that have been shown.

The most recent episode "Listen" was really good and an original idea and story that I greatly enjoyed.  So far this new series/season hasn't impressed me a lot - but this episode changed that situation.  Very, very cool!

Hang in there Pete. For me, the first three episodes were weak, poor writing and not very imaginative or new. This fourth episode was great! It's unique, different and very we'll done. Again, just my perspective but I'm much happier now with the new season/series.

Into the Dalek was just "OK", the Robin Hood one was very goofy. "Listen" was so great, a return to what many of us love about nuWho...slugs you in the gut with feels when you least expect it.

I'm a bit mixed on that last episode. Seemed a bit forced and in your face on the decision they had to make. Also, the end bit between the Doctor and Clara seemed to not ring true.
Title: Re: Doctor Who. The Peter Capaldi Series.
Post by: Meds on October 12, 2014, 07:37:34 AM
Mummy on the Orient Express was stunningly good. Loved every second it, almost a classic feel to it. Kind of wish we had some two part episodes but hey still great.

Kill the moon took the Dr into a more darker direction and I can see why that can bother viewers but the first season of a new Dr is always tricky.
Title: Re: Doctor Who. The Peter Capaldi Series.
Post by: Rico on October 12, 2014, 09:13:08 AM
Meds - I didn't find that "Kill the Moon" episode especially dark or anything like that, it just seemed a bit forced in some ways. Also, I'm fine with this Doctor and Clara not getting on as well as the previous but it seems a bit jumbled and not consistent so far to me.  Anyway, just my viewpoint.

Just started with the Capaldi season. Other than expecting him to sound like Pertwee, I'm digging it so far. He's definitely having some issues. Will be interesting to see how it resolves over time.

Post by: Feathers on October 17, 2014, 02:14:26 AM
Well, an interesting topic to jump back into.

I found the first episode a bit of a struggle story-wise and while I love Capaldi's doctor I think the character change has swung a bit too far for me to be comfortable with straight off the bat. This was maintained through the next few and I think only now will it start to settle down a bit.

I've seen some suggestions that some of the earlier scripts were written for Smith so maybe it's a case of making a 'best-fit' attempt to get the story out (which could also work as a doctor-to-doctor transition element.

I agree Clara is becoming more of a character in her own right but in her shoes I'd have given the Doctor the heave-ho for real by now, to the extent that I found the change at the end of the last epsiode a little hard to believe. As a viewer, I'd far rarther keep her in the series but I don't see that she actually has much reason to stay.

I think I'm basically in a quandary. Capaldi is probably the best Doctor in years but I just wish he'd setlle down and lighten up a bit. The stories haven't all been brilliant but I'm frustrated more by my views of the  character issues than anything else.

I thought it worked well and hope the relationship between the two main characters is beginning to settle down.

I thought it was a fun switch around this week with a surprising opponent. The end was a little melodramatic for my taste and perhaps more than was required but, overall, I enjoyed it and am still relatively happy with the way the series is running.

Next week looks fun too.

Indeed. It was shame they didn't manage that in earlier years when it could have been done "properly" though.

Overall I think it paid off on a lot of things, I still have some niggles but nothing earth shattering. Depending how they play the next series then I think the end was a pretty sad route to take (for the characters) but it was good to see them use a different direction.

I still say the trailer for Christmas was bizarre though.

Rematches it in bits and pieces as the kids caught up with things and while there are still little niggles, I have to say that, overall, I like it. Decision made.

I'm not a complete fan of the completely mad Master but it's the way the show has been running since the return and I can cope with it. Capaldi is just about 'there' for me now too, so I'll be interested to see how I react to him after a bit of a break until Christmas.

Got to find something else to watch with the children now :(
