Title: So, what do we all do for a living?!
Post by: Bryancd on November 06, 2006, 11:37:44 AM
As we are all intimately familiar with each others fanatsy lives, what do you do in the real world? I'll start:
My fancy title is Vice President-Investments at UBS Financial Services. I have been a financial advisor for 9 years now, started my career in NYC, right down on Wall Street.

Very cool Bryan.

I work in the Entertainment Industry. Started as a Production Assistant and worked by way up to Post Production Supervisor. I'm currently working on the Sunset Gower Studio for a new reality show called "Curl Girls" which will premiere next summer. You can check out the other stuff I have worked on here.. http://imdb.com/name/nm0594165/

Cool stuff guys.  As you know from my other posts, I'm a chemist.  Had a few different positions over the years, started out in teaching.  Oh, I had one other thought on this thread.  Maybe post your dream job too - unless you are doing it.  Mine of course would be to create and work on the next TREK series.  Come on CBS or JJ - call me, I'm in the book!  :)

Well I'm pretty much doing my dream job but of course I would love to be Post Production Supervisor on a big Network TV show or a really cool Sci Fi TV show, but I still have time.  :biggrin

Im a CPA for an international accounting firm.  I am currently working in Paris on a temporary international assignment.  Being a CPA is not the most exciting carrer but it has given me the opportunity to live and work in Paris for a year and a half so its not all boring.

I am a Civil Engineering Designer/Draftsman for a small startup engineering firm.  We design the site, grading and utility layouts for residential and small (hopefully soon - Large) commercial projects.  As an aside we also design on-site septic systems for individual residential homes.  I love doing it.

My dream job would probably be a play-by-play guy for a major league baseball or professional hockey organIzation (ie the Philadelphia Flyers).

You guys are a bunch of smarty-pants! ;)

I had to alter my original post (I mentioned the name of my company). I'm still plugging it, which I'm sure is ok, but I was a little concerned that they might not like my mentioning it in a forum... So If any of my fellow marketing co-workers have found this post through Google Alerts, you did not see me wearing Spock ears (/Jedi mind trick).  ;D  I did add a link below if you really want to see where I work...Its really no big deal, I'm probably just being parnoid. But I do want you all to come visit our park, so I added a link with a list of top water parks (were listed as number one).

I work as a graphic designer, within the corporate marketing department, at an award winning water park. I am one of two designers, in a five member marketing team. I am designer or Jedi Knight and my boss is the Art Director or Jedi Master. We create ads, billboards, park signage, retail merchandise anything graphical the corporation or parks happen to need.

One of our water parks, has won the title "America’s Best Water park" for 9 Years in a Row. It has received top awards in the World’s Best Water park, World’s Best Water park Landscaping and the World’s Best Water park Ride categories during the 2006 Golden Ticket Award ceremony at Holiday World amusement park. Nicknamed the “Academy Awards of the Amusement Park Industry,” the Golden Ticket Awards are presented annually by Amusement Today. The winners are determined by the results of an international survey conducted among hundreds of well-traveled enthusiasts and amusement park aficionados.

Oh, and this is my dream job. ::)

Ah, its tucked snuggly between Austin and San Antonio in the IH 35 corridorâ€"the perfect location for vacationers.  ;)
But we also have a park in Galveston (near Houston) and one in South Padre (on the Texas/Mexico boarder). The park in Galveston is a year-round water park. It sports a convertable covering over our heated attractions. Its the first of its kind. Come on in, the water's great! ;D

That's all I've go to say 'bout that...

I work for IBM doing IT/System Administration for external clients. I support mostly web based apps, and a little bit of email. Work mostly with Microsoft and Lotus products, as well as some other Third party type applications. I am basically the person who handles the programs no one else wants to.

I'm a social worker for a hospital in Philadelphia, my clients are adults with mental health/mental retardation that live in group homes or institutions in or around Philly.  My dream job would be singer/songwriter.

Very neat stuff folks.  Hey jedijeff - we use Lotus Notes (UGH!) via an IBM server where I work and it keeps having many problems.  Our IT person (I know more about computers than she does) comes in every morning early to reset the thing.  I think she has had an IBM tech in once but it still is messed up.  Any ideas?
Title: Re: So, what do we all do for a living?!
Post by: jedijeff on November 07, 2006, 03:16:24 PM
Hi Rico, sounds like it could be a lot of things. Your IT person should probably schedule the server to reboot in the morning, to save herself having to come in early in the morning. Past that, if it is happening in the evenings, maybe an issue with backups or other scheduled tasks happening in the evening. Just a guess though.

Well I feel a bit overawed by the talent pool in this groiup :) Great stuff guys n gals...

As for me, I'm a humble UNIX Systems Administrator for a state government run cultural institution (which basically means very little happens, and if things screw up, it's not like people can't get into their bank accounts or something!). Luckily we've had very few disasters (I could say that was due to my good work, but I'll be modest and say it is a team effort!) :)

I also have to suffer with Lotus Notes in my workplace. I much prefer mutt myself! LOL. Yes, I've been a nerd for so long I was tinkering before browsers, GUI's and the like were around....

dream job? mmmm miss universe judge.. no just kidding! I think it would be cool to work on a sci-fi show, in like art direction or something.. coming up with cool props and stuff. Either that or work in marketing for my Football Club! :D

I feel really inadequate now. I am just a humble White Van Man. This means I drive on the roads all day delivering bits and pieces to our engineers on site, I work for a fire alarm company, next year though I will be starting on the maintenance side which looks after all the fire alarms that we have on the company. I used to be in retail for many many years and sold the higher end of the market carpets, beds, furniture and other home goods. I hated retail except for working in a very old department store in Brighton, very much like the one featured in the old British comedy "Are you being served?" I doubt any of you will have heard of that.
Dream job? Well there is a programme over here called "Top Gear" which is all about fast cars. I would love to be a presenter on that show. Also, I always wanted to be a singer and entertainer. Not famous, just to earn a good living. Big dreams I know, but the question was,, dream job.  :blush

Mate are you sure you want the Top Gear gig after the unfortunate recent accident? How is that presenter (sorry, forgot his name) going?

A number of staff I work with here love Top Gear also. I'm not really a car guy (I don't drive) but I found it funny. They even hooked up a huge plasma screen in the office and popped on some DVD's a few weeks ago. We didn't get much work done that afternoon! :)

Hi there mate. Richard Hammond is doing remarkably well. He is out of hospital and expected to make a full recovery without any damage to his brain. He is even expected to be back at work within six months, and considering he wasn't expected to survive the night at one point, it's incredible. I for one shall be glad to see him again.  :D

In real life, I install, maintain and repair medical equipment in hospitals for Siemens.  For those that may not know, Siemens is kinda the GE of Europe, but there is a huge install base here in the states as well.

Like Rico, I think my fantasy job would be to work on the next Star Trek show, or maybe the upcoming Star Wars show.

edit:  One thing about my job is I'm driving all around Houston every day all day.  I may spend up to 4 hours a day driving out of my 8 (9) hour shift.  Sometimes more, sometimes less.  Anyway, podcasts keep me sane.

Rico!  Thanks for your podcast that helps keep me sane.

I don't envy your drive in Houston Elizur.  :wacko
I-35 can be a nightmare too...But the traffic is no where near as bad here as it is in Houston. Podcasts must be a staple to you.  :)

One thing that got me hooked on Podcasts and loving my iPOD was due to my daily commute.  Mine is about 45min - 1 hour each way.  Nice time frame for a podcast.  I listen to about two podcast each day.  Much better than listening to old commercial radio.  :)
Title: Re: So, what do we all do for a living?!

I have to agree with Rico. Since discovering Podcasts, I now listen to them most of the working day in my van. I downloaded them onto my mobile phone and used headphones ( don't tell the police). I have now bought an ipod and have just put them all on that, and with my cassette adapter, alot more legal. Since discovering podcasts and trying to catch up with Ricos and Extralifes output, I have stopped listening to the BBC news channel and feel as though I don't know whats going on in the non-geek world  :roflmao

I know this is heading more and more off topic but podcasts are great.. sort of like radio as in fresh content, but on our fave topics, whatever they may be!

As I said in my introduction post, and I don't want to harp on it, but I have approx 15 hours of "dead time" a week when I am confined to an uncomfortable chair, so podcasts along with just plain old music, really help the time to go.

Well... I used to write user manuals for accounting software until I was laid off at the end of October.  Right now, I'm picking up the occasional freelance copy edit job which seems to be working out well at the moment.

Dream job is to be an independent filmmaker, which is something I work on in my spare time.  With any luck, my first documentary should be finished in a couple of years.

I'm a high school English teacher.  Unfortunately, I have so many interests, my list of dream jobs would take up pages.  If I really had to narrow it down, I would like to be a Shakespeare consultant and go around the country teaching teachers how to teach Shakespeare.  I would also do residencies in high schools and work with the kids on mounting their own Shakespeare productions.  If I got tired of the traveling, I would like to work as an education director/actor for a Shakespeare company.  Again, I could work with teachers and students but have the stability of being home which would give me time to pursue acting.  If I got too old for all of that, I would write young adult novels.

I like your dream of writing young adult novels. You don't have to be "too old" to do that.  :) You should go for it.
Which play is your favorite Chrystabel? Mine is Julius Caesar.

I actually am developing an idea for a YA novel, and it really does make sense to write it while I'm still working with teenagers every day.

I love so many of Shakespeare's plays that it is hard to pick a favorite.  The plays that I have studied the most are Hamlet and A Midsummer Night's Dream, so they are probably my favorites.  I never really liked Romeo & Juliet, but I'm getting ready to direct it starting next week!  It's amazing how much a play grows on you when immersed in the process of performance.  My goal is to show kids that the end of the play is pointless and tragic...NOT romantic!

At the moment Im managing a wholesale portfolio of Big Rig Trucks for GE Capital. My terrirory covers all of the Northeast from Maine to New Jersey so im on the road a lot doing collateral checks, and working with dealers who are behind on thier payments and such.

Not a fun job, I have to be the grim reaper quite often and show up to tell some guy his familly business is history and im there to take everything. Cant wait to get out of this, hard on the soul.

My dream job is to reopen my store ( www.roguesden.com) that closed last year after two wonderful years of loosing lots of money :)

I learned a lot and am working on putting the investor group together to open at a better location with better inventory and some food franchises flanking it to build foot traffice and provide cash flow support.  Will be a few years but Im confident ill be back in the saddle before im 45.

Claymont DE,  It was an awesome place. We used to get up to 30 people for galactica every friday at the Cafe big screen.

I still miss my daughters Mocha Latte's - bank took the big espresso machine when we closed :(

we had miniature and card game tournaments, some times with up to 300 people in the store at once,  a video game room with linked xboxes online for team gaming

just lots of fun stuff, but not enough to consistently pay for the 12,000 square footage. That and my two partners quit for health reasons leaving me to try to run the place alone which was just too much.

Next time im including some established franchises , a dominoes pizza, a Au Bon Pair, a "TGI FRidays style resturant to be named later" , an ice cream shop and a game stop,  all in the same building with the 9000 square foot hoby shop and a 3500 square foot lounge / recreation are with pool tables , leather couches and big screens

will take a few years to get it all together but should be amazing once its up and running

oh yeah, and profitable this time too.

I'm sorry that your shop closed down, it sounded like a unique place to hang out.
My husband can relate...he had to close his company too. He finished his last job just last year. He made custom furniture and cabinets. He never could make a good profit because of the quarterly taxes he had to pay. I hope you'll be able to reopen one day soon. ;)

I just found this thread.

I am one of the  pastors at a church. We have a staff of 13.  I've been working in ministry related stuff for over 20 years now, started out in Christian Radio by managing KGHO AM & FM, a station here in town when I was only 21 years old.   I did that for 10 years, then I worked for a Union Gospel Missions in the development director area, then an Internet service provider in the web technology and sales department and finally going full time into pastoring at our current church http://www.clfgraysharbor.com (http://www.clfgraysharbor.com) about 9 years ago.  I started out as a youth pastor and have recently started speaking more frequently to  adults.  We have about 500 people that attend, and I even put little Star Trek quotes here and there in my sermons.  Pretty fun!  ::)

I have recorded lots of music (I like the hard stuff) I sing and play guitar, bass, drums and keyboards. This is a song that got airplay on local station, it is one of our mellow ones, but you get the picture.  I am singing and playing bass on this one. http://www.clfgraysharbor.com/play_music.php?FILE=37 (http://www.clfgraysharbor.com/play_music.php?FILE=37)  You can find out more about my life at http://www.christrocks.com  (http://www.christrocks.com)

I have written four full length musical productions and directed three of them (one of them had 1400 in attendance), plus I have written several more dramas.  I love to write, it is my passion!

I'm a massive techy geek and use all of it to enhance our services and presentations.  I've even had a TV program, although I'm not a regular TV evangelist, I am pretty down to Earth, except for when it comes to Star Trek.  :)

I'm not pushy or obnoxious about my faith, but I am thankful for what I get to do.  And I answer a lot of people's questions about the bible. This is my dream job, big time!  The only other thing I would ever enjoy doing is being an alien actor at the Star Trek Experience in Las Vegas.  Now that would be a blast! :andorian

So there you go, It was great to read what everyone does when their not enjoying trek!  You guys are awesome, and even though I have just begun to meet everyone, this board seems way cool.   ::)

Hi Moyer, I don't think I've had the chance to welcome you to the forums yet. "Welcome"  :)

I liked the song you provided a link to...Short of has a 80's Hair Band sound...maybe a little like 'Boston'? My favorite groups are Jars Of Clay and Third Day.  :metallica:

I love Jars of Clay & Third Day, I have really been getting into Evan Earwicker (Dance with me) lately, cool music.  Yeah, I know, what a name! :blink

I have been recording and performing with a younger group of people and have put out some other stuff in the last few months.... It's more worship orientated stuff.  Private message me and I can send you a link to that too.

Thanks for the welcome!

I wish we could hire a real IT guy.  The programming dept handles far more of the server maintenance and setup than we are qualified to do.

If you have spare time, start playing around with programming on your own, it's a good way to start.

As I mentioned in my intro thread, I am a Quality Assurance Engineer for a large digital asset management company in Madison, WI.  I started here 4 months ago.

I have a degree in Chemistry and was a chemist for the past 7 years at an analytical instrument manufacturer (HPLC systems) in Middleton, WI.  I "discovered" podcasting in the summer of 2005, when I stumbled upon TWiT and GeeksOn, and have been hooked ever since.  Podcasting is the greatest thing since sliced bread because people are passionate about their subjects, and  I am constantly learning new things through it.

My friends and I have a movie podcast that is very rough around the edges, and we are constantly working to improve it.  My dream job would be to own a hobby store and podcast.

Wellllll...up until last week, I was doing a "practice" retirement.  I was unemployed for 2 months.  Does that qualify as a dream job ?   Doing absolutely nothing ?  :)

Like quite a few on the forums, I work in the IT field.  My current position is heading up a group of developers both here and in India (off-shore).  I direct the standards, procedures and best practices for the development as well as prototype solutions.  I work in our imaging group where we convert hardcopies to scanned images.   I've worked on various platforms and have worked with PC's for almost 15 years.  Programmer, designer, teacher, front-middle-back tier -- done it all.

My dream job would be to own a software company.  :borg

Great Thread!

I'm a promotional coordinator for a small movie theatre chain in Nor. Caliofornia.  I've done everything you can do at a movie theatre from bag popcorn to running a 16 plex.  Much better job now though.  My job is to get more bodies in the door.  I get to do fun stuff like see movies early, get lots of cool movie stuff and talk about movies at work.  Who else can watch movie trailers as legitiamte work research?

I am going to school (for the second time, ick) to get a BS in Business Administration.

I feel the pain a few pages back on the Calculus, all I had to take was Baby Calculus and I couldn't stand it.  I can't imagine what the hard science major's have to do.

Dream job....hmm.....running a small store, maybe a comic book shop or game store.  Or building computers.   Something nerdy for sure.

Cool reading what everyone does for a living. Until recently I spent the last seven years working for a local university in the environmental health and safety field, after spending two years as a chiropractic assistant. EH&S is an interesting field but the work load became too much for me (long story). I suffered severe acute clinical depression for about 6 months last year and I decided I needed to do something else with my life. So, I started my own lawn maintenance service company and am making about as much, or more, as I was at my former job and way less hours. Since not sitting at a computer for 10 hours a day anymore I started losing weight and have dropped about 30 pounds in 3 months so far this season. I hope to lose another 30 before the season is over in November. In seven years at the university I gained 70 pounds! I really feel better and healthier than I have in ten years! Anyway, I found that having a job that does not require all my mental faculties through the day that I am enjoying my off time more by doing the more cerebral things I love. It used to be I was so mentally fatigued at the end of the day I could hardly think and concentrate once I got home. Now my mind is clear fresh, unless I have a little too much wine! :biggrin I try not to overindulge in drink anyway because I prefer a clear headed mind.

Everyone sounds so interesting, it is no wonder why you guys are Star Trek fans! I have said it before...and I will say it again: Star Trek fans are smart people.

As for me: I am a free-lance writer, screenwriter, producer, blogger and overall dreamer. Basically...I guess one word for me is "film-maker" or even DoubleThreat. DT is a nickname given in the business to people who will write and produce their own work.

Dream Job: Executive producer in Hollywood. I would also like to be *the* guy to revive the Star Trek TV series when the time comes. But I am sure everyone says that!

Wow...lots of interesting posts by lots of interesting people. :)

As for me, I am a CPA.  I was in Public Accounting for 10 years, with a few years of consulting work thrown into the middle of that working on regulatory issues for public utilities.

Currently, I am in internal audit for a very large company in the tech sector which everyone here has heard of, unless they live under a rock and have never touched a computer.  In fact, I actually have at least one co-worker who has posted right in this very thread...although it's a huge company and I have no idea who he is IRL.

I love internal audit - the hours are better and there is alot less stress.  Plus, I have traveled alot overseas for work (mainly to Europe and Japan), which I like because I have always loved overseas travel anyway.

My dream job?  I'd love to be a travel writer.  Or possibly a history professor at a university - preferably in Russian history or something.

But I'm pretty much locked into this accounting gig now...so there is no point in dreaming.

Hey, it could happen. Start small, start now. You currently travel, right? Create a travel blog or approach a travel agency about writing e-mail newsletters for their clientèle (Constant Contact is a great tool for mass mailing). You can do it on the side and build up a portfolio of work that you do for free or little money. For now. Perhaps there's an internal newsletter at work. Chronicle your trips abroad in some tangible way. Get in the habit of writing. It doesn't have to be a lot, just stay consistent. Take it slow and try not to get anxious about it. Find  little ways of getting your writing and name out there. Eventually, something will happen. Just be patient and willing to succeed.

Life is short my friend.

Hi everyone, I have been away from the forums and podcast for a while and this is why. I was just promoted. I am no longer the delivery driver. I made it to "Fire alarm maintenance engineer". It involves going round and testing fire alarm systems, making sure they all work properly. This is all residential flats. I will be learning fault finding and soon be on emergency call out. I am now 35 years old and this is the first job where I have learnt a trade or hands on skill. I was previously in retail selling high end furniture and that involved a totally different set of skills, even though people skills is important, it is never reflected in the wages if you are in retail and people sometimes see shop work as beneath themselves. Having spent over 15 years in the business, I heartily disagree. But my story does mean one thing, even at my tender age, it is never too late to do something different and challenging. I left school with absolutely awful exam results (honestly, they are so bad) but through self belief and a little hard work, you can achieve so much.
Sorry guys, didn't mean to get so heavy but I am so happy, but i will miss my last job of driving. I also loved that, but it was seen as being a low job.

Probably most of us have similar experiences Tim in our career pathways. I have been in many different occupational settings over the the last 30 years. Although my last job had prestige and a decent salary I hated it. I cannot sit at a computer (btw I love computers and technology, always have) and do research and write reports all day. When you gain 70 pounds in seven years I think some lifestyle changes need to be made. So many of our friends thought I was nuts starting my own lawn service company and going back to manual labor. The funny thing is that they have seen how it has improved me and that I am making as much money doing this and working less then I was working for the university. Also, I am way happier. Congrats on your new job and I hope you excel at it. Just do whatever you have to to avoid that desk job. It will be the end of you.

Thanks Kevin. I totally agree and you are the example of someone taking the risk and it paying off. However we got here, be it God or evolution, I cannot believe that we were meant to spend most of our life working in a job we did not enjoy. Our lives are far more important than that.

Here, here! Way to go! As a college dropout, I truly believe in hard work and flexibility. Leveraging every God-given ability is what it's about these days. Gone are the days (for the most part) when one works at one company for 30 years and gets the gold watch at the end. We have to constantly keep looking to the horizon. I started in retail over 20 years ago, then moved into (what was then called) desktop publishing. Now I'm slowly working my way into motion graphics and video (with the occasional voiceover project).

To quote the Native American proverb, use every part of the buffalo.

All the best on your new path.

Make the most of it. With the recent evolution of hardware and software, things are going to get very exciting or you. Keep an eye on the Japanese cell phone culture. I believe that the iPhone is America's first step toward that system. I was in a meeting a couple of days ago with a potential Japanese client who showed us how they use their cell phones for everything: wallet, ATM card, student ID, internet browser, video viewing device, jukebox. Apparently, laptops and desktop computers are not so popular.

Also keep in mind that when new technologies emerge, the technologists make the big bucks. However, it's ultimately the content providers that take over. Consider the early days of television and how it has evolved to reward those who provide the content.

Enjoy the adventure.

I'm a "Curriculum Graphics Developer" in a small office where I help to create classroom and computer based training material.

We produce live action video, computer animation and 3D illustration - anything to create courseware for our client's student pilots.

This field can be pretty challenging - often times I'm asked what the best format may be to illustrate a procedure or concept - so I find myself learning more about aviation than I ever thought I would

As a result I think my dream job would be - a commercial aircraft pilot.

I am currently working in collision parts at a large auto dealer group.  I am responsible to arrange all the parts from order to delivery that a job requires, plus all the paperwork, etc...  It's below my experience level (I was  Service and Parts Director of a dealership) and the pay sucks, however, after my wife passed away I had to scale back my ambitions so that I could raise my 3 kids.  This job is 7-4:30, and no weekends and very secure, perfect to raise kids by myself.

Sounds like you made the right choice Todd. To many places want so much of your time, and in the end it is not worth it. Family first is the most important thing, and all these companies with hollow "Work/Life" policies a distant second. Wish you all the best, and I am sure your Kids will grow up the better for it.

I really wish I was as cleaver as some of you guys, so what I do is not up to some of high levels some of you have reached, but all said and done I love my job even if the hours and the commuting times are a bit long.
I work for a medium sized engineering company in my home county of Worcestershire where we make bespoke shop fittings and most of the major high street stores. I work in the sheet metal section as a programmer/setter/operator we use CNC machines for punching, cutting and bending steel for various fittings and components. I have been in this field for about 15 years now and I really could not see me doing anything else. In many respects this is my dream job, I just love to make things and always enjoy the challenge of making something new or different.  My hobby is IT I love to build my own computers and love to learn new skills.
As a footnote I would like to add that 10 years ago my wife decided to change her career from a legal secretary to nursing, she is now an honours degree staff nurse working for the NHS and I am so proud of her I will spout it given any opportunity. :) :metallica:

yeah, at first it was kind of intimidating.  The most I have ever spoken in front of was a crowd of 960 or so.  Our church is around 400 or so, we have two services, so what I goof up on first service I can correct 2nd service! :) Of course, I have done TV and radio, and I don't know how many people were listening or watching.  But live, I still get butterflies before I get up and speak, and I've been doing the live speaking almost 10 years.

Very cool Rick.  What I found from teaching and doing a little public speaking and the podcast is the number after awhile doesn't matter that much.  Just relax, take a deep breath and be yourself.

Yeah I did some teaching and public speaking when I was in Air Cadets. It used to terrify me. Now I still get a bit nervous but I think it's more of a good nervousness. I'm not scared of messing up and looking stupid, I just want to do the best I can and be engaging and funny.

Being a cadet from age 14-19 was one of the best experiences of my life and taught me how to be a teacher and a leader. It also got me my glider and private pilot's licenses!

You look style'n in your black shirt and tie Rick! What a set up your church has!
I used to sing in a trio at church and always had extreme nervousness. I never got over it, which is weird because I don't mind talking in front that many people, but as soon as I have to sing I almost feel sick to my stomach with fear. I felt much better when I was a back-up singer...I felt like I had a nice comfortable place to hide behind the lead vocalist.  :D

I only wear a tie at funerals, weddings and some holidays, I think I was one of the only ones in church on Sunday to wear a tie.  We are pretty casual at CLF.

:)

The church is a nice facility with lots of cool sound equipement and lights.  I like multi media stuff a lot, and it helps to present things cool.  The coolest thing about the church is the very sincere and nice people that attend.  I have some great friends that really care about each other and our community.  I work with an outstanding leadership team.

As long as I have time to prepare, I usually do ok.  I don't get too nervous, but like I said before, I always have a little twinge because I care a lot about what I am presenting.  I really want to get things across in a relevant way.

When I was a kid I hated church and never went because of it.  I thought it was boring.  I have made it a mission in life to make it fun and relevant all at the same time.  Not many people sleep through my sermons!

:)

Yea, I have that issue, especially when its been a long week and I gotta go to church.....you start dozing when these pastors talk sometimes.  Really bad habit of course and I don't reccomend doing it.  :(  But yea, I've been giving church a less harsh look as I used to.  Maybe getting out of my rebelious stage.  Who knows.  ;)

The key is finding a good one with people that aren't legalistic and stuffy.  It isn't easy to find a place with relatable people in it.

Not sure if I posted here yet or not, and im too stuffed and lazy to look.

I work for a company that makes the signs you see on top of Pizza Delivery cars. Although anyone can buy them, and use for any reason, our biggest customers are the Pizza giants and food delivery folks.

I also have my Class A CDL so I may run away from home some day and drive a truck...if my wife will let me  :-)

Well this is an old thread and as of late i'm resurrecting them. I work for a manufacturing company in Solihull, West Midlands in England. We make hard and soft faced hammers. We supply hammers and safety tools (non sparking tools) to the many big companies in the UK, Europe, Australia and the good old US. I'm in charge of all metal cutting (generally because no one else can do it or want to ha ha) I also of late have started working in the sales department, though if i'm honest i like doing that simply because I'm not on the machines getting covered in coolant and straining my brain with calculations. I drive to work which takes about half an hour, so i get to have a bit of the old ipod on the go. My wife to be (we get married in June) is a sister in the local A&E (ER in the US) hospital.

Way to resurrect an old one!

Hello everyone.  I'm a graphic designer for the University of Nebraska Medical Center and an aspiring comic book artist.

I've snuck my way into the graphics field about 11 years ago and (minus a year I took off to work on this cool construction/sculpture job I had) have been doing is ever since.  I was a supervisor for a small graphics department at the last place I was working...but about a year and a half ago I decided to take this job here at the University.  The benefits RULE and now I'm just a worker bee...so when everything goes to hell...it's not my falt anymore! YAY!!!

Also, I've always wanted to be involved in comics...but it was just last year that I really started to get serious about my art work.  Look for me on comic book store shelves soon!  (HA!  I wish!)

I have two jobs. I work with handicapped adults that is what pays the bills. I really enjoy taking care of my residents. The job I enjoy the most is being a  preacher. I am a licensed minister in my church. I have being preaching for about 6 years now. I am hoping to one day have my own church.

A Sister is a head nurse, eg she is in charge of her shift at the hospital. Each sister answers to a Matron who is in charge of the whole department.

Trying to revive a long-dead thread...

The short answer - ticketing and arts admin.  I had all these thoughts of becoming an astronomer, and then physics kicked my butt in college.  So I got my degree in mathematical chaos theory and started working in theatres.  It makes complete sense.  After college, I almost became a professional tap dancer, but just missed the cut.  For three years I worked selling house seats & group tickets, plus a little marketing, for THE ballet company in NYC.  Now I work selling discount tickets for Broadway and Off-Broadway productions.  In my volunteer life, I'm the "Business Manager" of my high school's theater alumni association, which we just started this year.  Filing for that non-profit status with the government is no easy.  Seems I just can't get away from arts admin.

My dream job?  I don't really know.  I have so much interest in so many different things.  But I have learned that I'm not a fan of answering phones and having to deal with other people's problem, usually cause by the fact that those people don't read or understand what they're doing most of the time.  For a while, I thought I could be a baseball writer.  Or a forensic scientist.  Sometimes I say that I'd love a mindless job that carried no responsibility.  But, really, I'd love to be able to make a living blogging.  But I don't have the attention span.

I was born over four hundred years in the Highlands of Scotland, I am Duncan McClown. Ooops sory, one of my many Walter Mitty day dreams.

I am a clown. A real balloon twisting, magic performing, juggling, and childrens entertaining clown.  I have been performing since the age of thirteen,  I am now forty-nine and have been performing full time for over eleven years.
My dream job was to be an astronaut, and my teachers in school agreed with my choice, because they said I was, "Taking up space in class. "
However I showed them by skipping a grade in class. I went from the fourth grade to the second grade. But I digress, becoming an astronaut was never to be. I was too short, flat footed and have poor eyesight.
No worry, my first love "SCIFI" (take that SYFY Channel) takes me into space anytime I want.

I'm a parts salesman for a local over-the-road truck dealership. It's a very fast-paced, detail-oriented job. I'm constantly taking orders over the phone and handling customers at our sales counter, which is why sometimes my posts will seem a bit disjointed. (I've had to stop and come back to this post three times so far :-[) Although it's often demanding and at times extremely frustrating, I try to keep a positive attitude about it. I'm luckier than many other people.
I'm also currently a student at two of our local community colleges. I'm working on a two year bachelor of science degree in chemistry. It seems like it's taking forever to accomplish, but i'm glad that I have the opportunity to do it and that I have the support of my girlfriend Carrie. Again,- I'm luckier than many.

ChadH, how nice of you to mention me  :-* .  I'm just sorry you have to slog through work and school with two teenagers and a nagger in a fixer-upper.

So, what do I do?  I help people find the right master's program for them.  There's a ton of degrees out there, and it can be overwhelming to choose among them.  So, I help.  I'm also very involved in nonprofit development and leadership programs in our area, helping to provide training to staff and boards.  I'm a thesis away from getting my master's in nonprofit development, and will have to start being selfish with my time to try to get it done before my boss retires next spring (no pressure!).

I also work with an international foundation which has provided me with headaches and opportunities; it's allowed us to go to Berlin twice (I've had to go alone to other places, too).  We had to pass on India this year because we committed to remodeling our kitchen.  What a tough choice that was!  *sigh*

I'm helping in the IT department at a local company called McGregor, that helps farmers to produce better crops (I come from the land of farmers by the way) and making farming more modern. Hey! Have I never posted my job here? I thought I had but...

I'm a Systems Engineer in an Avionics/Aerospace company in the UK. Meaningless description, isn't it?

I used to write software for a living (for our range of on-board navigation computers) but moved up in the world to the point where I now write documents instead. These get farmed out to other people (internal and sub-contract) so they can write the software or build the hardware which we then put on the aircraft in order to get it to do what's required. That's also a pretty meaningless description...

As for what I do for a living.  I have worked in the private security industry for more than ten years.  My position is that of a unarmed uniformed security officer.  I have also been a supervisor in the Field for 9 of those years.  I was working for one of he largest security providers in the world.  I recently quit work there and relocated to another city and I have been working for  a new compmay now, in a different city, I moved to be closer to my gf.  I suppose my dream job would be a scientist, engineer or astronaut.  I wanted to be a medical doctor at one time but things did not work out that way.     :old_bash:

Don't know that I've ever said what I do for a living...well, I'm a scientist working on a cure for male pattern baldness. Of course, I don't like wearing those little rubber gloves, so you can imagine my hands are quite hairy. :)

Just kidding. I can't believe that I've been here for so long and haven't told y'all what I do! I work for a private post-secondary university as the Veterans Educational Benefits Administrator. Been doing this now for 12 years, seems like 100. Not a very impressive, or even fun job, but it pays (some) of the bills! I'm pretty thankful that in such a difficult economic climate (here in the U.S.), I have a job with benefits. So there you have it. I'm a boring administrator. And wannabe writer/voiceover talent/podcaster/film maker!! :)

My father used to work for a regional airline called Nordair that exclusively flew up north, lots of very surreal scenery up there. Actually some of the planes they fly in Ice Pilots NWT (if you guys have that show) were purchased from Nordair when it went out of business in the 80's.

Yeah, some of those conditions they have to drive in are pretty extreme. I live in Canada, and somewhat more northern, but still far away from what is seen in those shows. They took some of the Ice Road Truckers for an off shoot of the show, and had them driving roads in India, now those are some really dangerous driving conditions.

Seeing them hanging on to every nook and cranny on the trains in India is bad enough, so if the commonwealth games village was anything to go by I think I'd take my chances on the ice.

Haha, to some artists it may be rude. But in this case, it's almost an inside joke, so I'll explain.  I get into selling art at a few craft/creative products fares and whatnot, and for the last few years, crafters and designers have been pasting or embroidering an owl on everything from handbags to stockings to urns and selling them for it.  This piece is a poke at the trend.

Yay, I'm finally employed again!  :metallica:

I hadn't mention it on the forums, but It's been almost a year now of being turned down or worse - getting no response at all.

Then bam! Two days after submitting another resume I get called in for an interview  and an hour later receive their job offer as a full time prepress tech.

- Wow times have changed since I did this last... no more stat cameras and hand stripping film on light tables. Everything is digital now - cool!

My business has started to take off and I am so busy I can't see straight!  At least I have been for a few weeks.  I've been doing quite a bit of video game music for different games.  That is very fun!!!!

Here are two videos I did with the Toursim Council at Dauphin island.   I co wrote the video, did the music and the voice overs.  A company called Ideawercs took the footage and helped me write it.  Very fun project.  I have three more videos on my contract with them.

I have a more recent martial arts background. I always wanted to do martial arts when I was a kid, but never did (grew up in a small country town so it was never practical), and during college (4 years ago now) I start doing Jiu Jitsu (which is my main focus), and little striking, mainly kickboxing. BodyCombat though a fitness and cardio class does encompass a lot of the forms of martial arts, and I've studied a little more outside of Combat into the forms to help bring out their energy and authenticity in my classes. We do a lot of Tae Kwon Do, Karate, Muay Thai, and even Capoeira in BodyCombat!

That was a guy who was trying out to qualify as a U2 pilot.
Even with previous flight experience in cargo or fighters jets, he still only get three tries during the interview process.

It's a real balancing act to land on just two inline wheels, especially on a windy day, and not everyone can do it.
The U2 has a 140 foot wingspan and uses two extra temporary wheels to take off. They drop away after liftoff - pretty crazy.

Even if they qualify for the rest of the flying... if they can't land, get washed out.

So if it's not easy to land, as a bonus, the pilot can't see the runway and there's no proximity detector in the cockpit.
The chase car (Pontiac GTO) tells the pilot how close he is to touch down in feet.

I may have posted this in my introduction, but here goes:

I'm an IT Professional for a financial research organization. They have a large staff of financial analysts, programmers, and database guys that help the publishing team push out financial advisory information for our subscribers. Our clients include everything from small hedge fund managers to financial advisers for companies like Wells Fargo, JP Morgan Chase, and banks all over the world.

I'm not so great on the financial stuff, but I'm responsible for helping to keep the technology infrastructure running. We're a smaller company that was recently bought by a larger European company with a similar focus. It's probably the best job I've ever had. Good money, great working environment, and a very high caliber of people that help keep me motivated to be the best.

Before I got into IT 8 years ago, I did pretty much everything. Private Security, Retail Management, Health Care, Manufacturing, Automotive Maintenance, Sales. I was a late bloomer. It took me quite awhile to figure out what I wanted to do.
