A cool picture of Kerry working in the early day's of his film.

Ah, the days of limited memory, Zip and SyQuest cartridges.

After seeing this movie I was surprised to learn the real story behind it and thought it would make a good podcast.

If you're a movie production and FX geek like me, there's an excellent documentary on the DVD.
I still have some of my vintage gear like Kerry used to make his short film. ;)

Thank you M-5! :)

Jon Avnet cautioned Kerry on his first draft about being too much of a 'Boys with toys' film and was surprised on the second draft how sophisticated Kerry had made the characters relationships.

Myself, I like the James Bond angle of Sky Captain's plane and the other British elements, Brits are cool.
Even though the tension between Joe and Polly was necessary, but I wouldn't call it a Chick Flick - he's just a guy with girl trouble.

Needless to say I'm a huge fanboy of this film.

You guest podcasters!  Every time I listen to one of these movie review podcasts I just have to go back and watch the movie with the inside knowledge.  Darn!  (but a real good darn!).  Great one @Davekill.

Hi all to the form, I just listen to the skycaptain podcast just this past weekend.  it was a great podcast.  Me and my brother went to see when it was first released.  we both enjoyed it but it seemed like it could have been better some how.  I just watched the oral short here on the forum and it was just cool just like the opening of the movie.  btw, I just read from the nerdiest news that it ranks number 2 in what movies they would like to  have in a 3D conversion.

Good point - maybe the story would have been better as a short series rather than a stand-alone-movie.

I liked the Avengers movie partly because it revisited 'the scene of the crime', but on a grander scale.
Both movies had a lot in common; the battle in Manhatten, flying aircraft carrier, and Gwyneth Paltrow.

Glad you like the review :)

Just got a chance to re-watch with my two younger padawans and they  loved it!  Started listening to your podacst right after that, Dave. Thanks and great job on it.  Can't wait to check out the original 6 minute clip as well.  High praise, my man.

Thanks guys.
I'd like to see VH1 or A&E do a feature on Kerry and Kevin, talk about a Cinderella story. At least he has a good wiki page;
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kerry_Conran (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kerry_Conran)

It says at one point he was hired to direct the ill-fated 'John Cater of Mars'.
YouTube has his early concept demo reel for the characters and sets.

I finally finished listening to your podcast davekill and I will admit not liking this movie all that well but after listening to your podcast I do want to check it out on Netflix. They are showing it in HD. With your behind the scenes info you shared it could make the movie more interesting to watch. Good job on the show.

Yes I believe you pointed out that this was the first time he was ever directing a movie.  maybe they should have gotton a list director and had him consult.

That would have been the safe bet.

But not only did Kerry just direct, he had to develop the techniques for his actors and cameras to perform on a big empty grid, like a holodeck.

Maybe that's why Kerry directed - because no one else would know how.

Sorry for late reply I'm a few weeks behind on podcasts so having a TSF day today.
Davekill, great show. I saw this film at the cinema and although initially disappointed I now appreciate how ground breaking it was.

Great podcast :)
