Title: 2012 Olympics
Post by: Bromptonboy on July 27, 2012, 10:25:31 AM
Any of our UK contingent (or any one for that matter) going to attend the games in London?  I would love to check this one out, but will have to just watch the ceremony on TV tonight.

Same here.  They are broadcasting on NBC at 7:30PM ET in this area.  Danny Boyle handled the organization, and I have always liked all of his creations.  It is going to be tough to beat the Beijing show.

I got the PVR all lined up to record so I can watch when I get in from work.

Yeah, it's going to be near impossible to top that one.

The opening ceremony was ground breaking, very very proud to be British. The Bond segment with the Queen was ace, plus you got to hear the Tardis during a Queen song. Having the inventor of the world wide web Tim Berners-Lee in the ceremony was a great idea as well.

That's cool that Patrick Stewart got to carry the flame! Also, I missed the beginning of the Opening. I'll have to find the Queen/Bond segment here somewhere on the WWW. I did see most of it and enjoyed it. The parade of nations seemed to go real quick, which I liked. The commentaters on NBC kept saying how fast is was going.

Rather shocked to hear NBC cut the tribute to those who died during the London bombings. Their excuse was "we edited it for American viewers" hmmm insult to us and their viewers if you ask me.

I was getting very annoyed when they were talking over parts of the presentation - this news annoys me more.

Loved the men's cycling road race, 400 IM final, and Kerri and Misty back together on the beach slappin' butts and spiking balls!

NBC should be ashamed of how poorly they've handled the Olympics

Did you see the women's road race today? Looked like a hellish ride through the rain.

I saw a good chunk of that, it was definitely accident-prone out there. Yikes

We were going to nip out to Kingston and watch them pass but the rain put paid to that idea.

I drove to work down some of that course last Thursday as the barriers were starting to go up :)

So, the big Olympic flame had to be put out to be moved?  Anyone got a light!  :)

I wasn't impressed by the way they lit it anyway. How did torches at 7 of the bells cause all the others to ignite as well? I bet they had a hidden pilot light somewhere (or had electronic ignition fitted to all the mouths). Thus, it wasn't burning with the Olympic flame at all! ;)

I am semi-serious since I can't figure how they got it to work and when they said on the coverage that they were going to move it, you pretty much knew they'd have to turn it off to do so.

(and of course the Telegraph spelt organisers correctly - it's an English paper writing in the English language. Why on earth would they use the American spelling? That was just a stupid comment on par with the NBC commentary ;) )

I really don't think it has, that I can recall.  Typically they just have the flame way up high somewhere and it never moves.  I know when I watched them light that big cauldron all I kept thinking is why is it down so low?  No one is going to be able to see it.

Yeah, I was wondering the same thing.

Beach volleyball is a great Olympic sport. I have been cathing some here and there and do like watching it. I would like to be able to see some of the.......Sorry, beach vollyball just came back on. GO Misty and Kerri!
So, as I was saying I would like to see some of the "lesser" sports covered on NBC because I don't get any of the oher channels. I did watch some water polo. That has to be a hard sport!
