Title: Iris 9000 for your iPhone
Post by: Rico on October 25, 2011, 09:04:45 AM
Man, this is pretty darn cool!

IRIS 9000 is basically a voice control module for the iPhone 4S. It comes with a buit-in microphone which can pick up your voice from a distance as well as a remote control which can be used to trigger the Siri feature from up to 50 feet away. Oh, and as a bonus: There's a creepy red "eye" on the accessory which flickers and glows along with Siri's voice.

Nice.

Even cooler if it was a red square instead of a red circle and it was called Knight Industries 2000! ;)

Wow. Siri must be pretty popular. Still miffed they didn't include it on iPad 2, no technical reason not to.

Actually it's already been added to iPhone 4 and iPad 1 via jail breaking, but doesn't communicate with Apple's servers yet. I'd be tempted to jailbreak if they can get it working 100% (a a reliable jailbreak method is found for iPad 2).

It's expected to make it's way to the iPad 2 - at some point.  I still think it's gimmicky, a bit.  Even though I love Trek and the way they talk to computers there, I really don't think I'd sit around at home talking to my iPad.  :)

I could see it being useful in two situations (both of which apply more to the phone then the iPad)

1. In the car, more intelligent voice dial, dictating texts, finding locations

2. Making calendar appointments via Siri is much more intuitive then via the interface.

I'm already doing this, late at night, when everyone's asleep. "I love you, iPad. Don't ever leave me, iPad.  You had me at hello, iPad."

a friend of mine recently got an iphone 4. his favorite thing to do is to say into the voice recognition software "i would like to hide a body"
the answers it comes up with are "would you like a swamp? would you like an abandoned factory?" it's the most hilarious thing :biggrin

And it is only 10 years late.  Not bad for science fiction.
