Title: Texas Renaissance Festival/ Wheel of Time Weekend
Post by: Jen on October 12, 2011, 09:23:29 PM
Every year our 'nerd herd' heads to the Texas Renaissance Festival in Plantersville, Texas. It's a big deal for us and we go ALL out as far as costuming is concerned. No store bought stuff for us. It's mostly handmade. Angela, being the theatre director and costume designer, forced me to go about 6 years ago...and I've been going in costume ever since. We also convinced our husbands to go in costume. My husband is a non-geek, but the dude makes his own garb and looks awesome in all his creations. I'll post a few pics from past T-Rens in the coming weeks.

This year, Angela and I are going to the festival two weekends in a row. The first weekend will be our small group of "girl friends"; there are four of us in all. We usually have a costume theme for the entire group, but that weekend the girls will go as whatever they darn well feel like going as. I believe we'll be podcasting from the camp grounds and there may or may not be video footage that will make it into our podcast feed. We have press passes / a work relationship with the folks at T-Ren so there may also be interviews.

The weekend after our "geek girl trip", our entire flock of friends will be going together. That includes our husbands. The theme this year is The Wheel of Time. Ironically, we all seem to have been written into that series of novels...some of us even look like the characters described in the book.  If you haven't read the books here are some links that will include photos and a bit of a description about each character.

I will be going as Min Farshaw. WoT Wiki article: http://wot.wikia.com/wiki/Min_Farshaw (http://wot.wikia.com/wiki/Min_Farshaw)

Angela will be Nynaeve al'Meara. WoT Wiki article: http://wot.wikia.com/wiki/Nynaeve_al'Meara (http://wot.wikia.com/wiki/Nynaeve_al'Meara)

Our friend Stephanie is going as Elayne Trakand: http://wot.wikia.com/wiki/Elayne_Trakand (http://wot.wikia.com/wiki/Elayne_Trakand)

Our friend Jen(y) is going as Egwene al'Vere: http://wot.wikia.com/wiki/Egwene_al%27Vere (http://wot.wikia.com/wiki/Egwene_al%27Vere)

My husband is Rand al'Thor: http://wot.wikia.com/wiki/Rand_al'Thor (http://wot.wikia.com/wiki/Rand_al'Thor)

Angela's is Mat Cauthon, but he's insisting on going as Lan just so he can be a warrior and walk around arm in arm with Angela.

I'm currently making Aes Sedi rings for Angela, Stephanie and Jen(y). I'm also helping to gather props for Dave (my husband). I found a great looking dragon buckle and he's currently making a red velvet long coat, based on an image he found online. It looks pretty cool.

Here are some photos from our recent "Girls Only" trip to the Texas Renaissance Festival. We're going back this weekend in our Wheel of Time costumes.  We'll be doing a special Anomaly T-Ren report, which will include video and photos from both trips, in a couple of weeks.

Here's a sneak peak of the photos that will be in our Renfest Vidcast, which will include a report from Angela and I as well as video footage. That will hit the feed in a week. Our group dressed as characters from The Wheel of Time. I was Min Farshaw, Dave was Rand al'Thor and Angela was Nynaeve al'Meara. We also had a Brigitta Silver Bow, Elayne Trakand and Egwene al'Vere. We posed for a BILLION photos that fellow Renfest goers took.  It was a blast...now we're considering attending cons as these characters. :)
