So I took my daughter out of school yesterday to see the Lion King in 3D. Now I'm a huge fan of most Disney films, but I wanted her to take her time getting to know the films before I piled them all on. That being said, she has seen several Disney films, but the Lion King was not one of them.
The limited run time and my work schedule forced me to make a decision. Daddy Daughter day would just have to bypass school this one time.
So we went to see the film early in the morning to get the best price and keep her attention.
The 3D was amazing and more than I expected. I don't know how they did it, but they made the characters look 3D. When one of them talked, you could see that there was depth in the open mouth. There were other cool things going on, but this is how I can best sum it up.
At the end of the movie, when the rain is falling, it looked like it was raining in the theater. When my daughter tried to reach out and touch the rain like she does when it does rain, I just smiled. Job done.
No bathroom breaks, no talking, just laughing and smiling the whole film.
5 out of 5 for the sheer ability for a parent to find both peace and joy for the run time.
Everyone should take their kids to see it in 3D if their kids can fit the kiddie glasses.
Awesome review X!! Thanks so much for sharing that!
Animation I think is much easier to convert over to 3D than standard film or video. It already is built in layers. Didn't they also just re-release this on DVD/Blu-Ray too? I thought I saw it in the Best Buy ad recently.
Rico, I believe it will be released in the Diamond Edition Blu Ray/DVD/ Digital copy on October 4

True, it's built in layers, but on the cells, there isn't depth like where was. when you draw an open mouth, you shade for depth, but this was actual depth in the mouth. you could see the space around the tongue.
I don't know how "The Lion King" was originally made, but if it was digital even shading can be layered. In any case, glad you and your daughter enjoyed it. Always liked that movie a lot.
I agree with X's review, I saw it a few days ago and it was rather awesome for a 3D conversion. Which makes me think that animation is the only thing that has a future in 3D.

Oh, I forgot to mention the Trek connection.
Simba's mother is also Geordi's mother and she is also played the first female Captain on screen in Trek.
I heard a lot of great things about this, thanks for the review, Chris!
And Tim, you are wrong...again... ;)

I think it might partly be because our mind knows that it's not real so we are more willing to accept the limitations of the technology in some places. Lion King had a lot of foreground 3D that popped, but most of the movies that I enjoy with the effect have more background 3D elements. If that makes sense.
I think i'd go see this, nice review Chris. I think we all know our own thoughts on 3D, I find it too dark and rendering really does not work for me but in animation it does. Mainly because the colours are brighter helping the development. In Cap America the only bits i liked in 3D was the animation bits at the start lol.
So I wish my daughter was older as I think I too would like to have a Daughter, Daddy day with The Lion King 3D.
I planned on seeing this in the theater again and with X's review makes me what to see it even more.. thanks Chris
i need to see this!
