Now this is what I'm talking about....

NASA is ready to move forward with the development of the Space Launch System -- an advanced heavy-lift launch vehicle that will provide an entirely new national capability for human exploration beyond Earth's orbit. The Space Launch System will give the nation a safe, affordable and sustainable means of reaching beyond our current limits and opening up new discoveries from the unique vantage point of space.

Nice! Wow, Werner von Braun's design still has steam.
Here's more

meh
If those solid boosters were really extendable warp nacelles I'd get excited,
Since that's not going to happen NASA should continue deveopment on the Ares rocket they where testing till last year.
I don't see the logic here
Sorry, just looks like a retro rocket.
I might be wrong but I thought the blueprints for the Saturn V were scraped after the Apollo program was canceled.

Tried, true, and cheap, that's why.
I bet the government has black projects built in the skunk works that don't use ole smelly chemical boosters..... too bad all this is probably used for military purposes. Think of all the jobs and science that would be attained by space exploration/ mining and so on. Makes you wonder why we never went back to the moon after 40 years?

It was political. we wanted to beat the Russians to the moon and we did. the public and the elected officials lost interest after that. but it does make me wonder were we would be if we continued and not stopped.
does look similar to things done in the past, but it's a cool rocket all the same.

Yes it does. the whole thing is reminiscent of the old Apollo days.

Our manned space program didn't stop, we just returned to a low earth orbit and stayed there for the last 40 years doing Skylab and the ISS.
But I know what you mean, instead of man going further into space NASA has been sending probes.
Astronauts where as famous as rock stars once.

Yes that is true. I wanted to be an astronaut when I was a kid. manspaceflight has stayed in low earth orbit and we have only used space probes to make our presence known out there. it seems so romantic from the sci-fi point of view to send people to explore other worlds and we have not done that since Apollo.

maybe we'll find a way to send people to mars someday.

That would be great once we land a man on mars. I don't think it will happen until a long while though.

who knows? science can progress at very different rates. there could be a big breakthrough just waiting to happen.
of course these are all maybes. it probably won't happen very soon.

A big breakthur would be nice I think. but I think you are right it won't happen soon.
