God I can't wait for this. I poured 100 hours into Oblivion, and I sure wish this game was out now while I have full time to play it. It looks great. If you like Oblivion you should also try the Fallout games if you haven't. Same company, same type of game, set in a post-apocalyptic wasteland.
BTW, the dragons look super scary in this game. I don't want to fight them!
I played only a little of Oblivion, but both my kids loved it. This game is going to be great!
Tied with Mass Effect 3 for my most hotly anticipated game of 2011, though I'm not convinced either will actually make it out this year.
I really disliked Oblivion, (bugs, broken mechanics, dull combat) thus I'm not really that interested in this game.

I love open world, go anywhere, do anything games like this. Especially when Orcs, Goblins, and Ice Trolls are all over and need to be blown up with fireballs. What I liked the most about Oblivion and from what I've seen, Skyrim is the same, is that your abilities aren't limited by a specific class like most role playing games. If you want to be a magic user that specializes in bows and arrows, you can do it. If you want to be a stealth based assassin with healing powers, you can. Every ability is open to all characters and levels up the more you use them, so there are no limits. Awesome.
Yes, always what is great about these games since Morrowind. You get better at what you do. If you want to be stealthy, those skills go up as you use them, etc.
Hands on game preview here:

Ahhhhh. I think I'm calling in sick on Nov. 11th. And for once, my wife agrees with me. As with Oblivion, I get the 360 version and she gets the PC version..so we can play at the same time. Yeah, we are nerdly wedded husband and wife.
So, who is diving into this tomorrow?

</-----
I have off work tomorrow for Veteran's day. I'll be picking this up at midnight tonight, and don't anticipate playing anything else for quite some time.
I may give this a go at some point, Oblivion didn't really do it for me so I'm not really comping at the bit for this one. I find the combat in these games very awkward.
As a followup:
If you're getting the PC version, here is a great list to see where your graphics card stacks up in the current 'lineup'.

The top end cards on this list cost as much as most people's computers!
Anyone playing yet? On a side note, it seems Steam got hacked!

I played for a couple hours Thursday late night and friday afternoon while the kids were napping. I wanted to play more last night but was too exhausted. It's definitely Oblivion/Bethesda at its roots, just more, bigger, and more beautiful. What more can you really ask for. This series is the best of the best kind of game, and this kind of game is the reason why I fell in love with video games in the first place.
I am playing as a Destruction/Conjuration magic user, which means I summon elementals or pets to take agro while I use fire, frost and lightning to blow away my opponents. Im starting to experiment with bound weapons and leveling up my one handed weapon skill to do some melee myself. The game encourages you to use many different skills because you gain exp and perk points by leveling up any of the many skills at your disposal. It's overwhelming (in the best way) how much there is to do in this game.
Sounds great Joby. Looking forward to giving it a go.
Some funny game glitches here:

I haven't run into many bugs so far but there's been some weird behavior, like corpses dancing, and sticky geometry, nothing too bad.
I'm hearing a lot of reports of game crashing, bad UI decisions and a lot of bugs. One friend said it was like getting cut by a 1000 paper cuts. also some questionable graphics in certain places of the game.
Apparently the game is decent...but I'm not daring to try it. Knowing my luck I'll get 10,000 bugs.

Looks like there's a TNG fan on the development team of Skyrim! I ran into a NPC named Temba Wide-Arm...I don't think anyone besides us and a few other hardcore Trekkies would get that reference, pretty cool I think.
people at school are just ecstatic about this game!

I'm two weeks in to the game and I have to say, it's the absolute best fantasy style single player role playing game I've ever played. There's so much to do, so much to see. Like I said, I've been playing pretty regularly for the past two weeks now, and of the 8 or so major cities (read: quest hubs) I've been to one of them. The rest of the time I spent completing the Mage College questline, seeking out Words of Power, killing random dragons which appear frequently, completing miscelaneous quests (they call these radiant quests) which, while at the core are basically fetch quests, they take you to amazing, interesting, locations and everthing you do seems to open up five more things to do next. It's absolutely incredible. I am sure I will be playing this game well into next year.
Joby, are you playing on PC or a console? I'm getting interested and might do this at Christmas. Just not sure my PC will be able to handle it!
I'm playing the 360 version. I heard that the PS3 has some framerate issues, and if you think you can play it on PC then I would definitely pick that version because you have access to the massive mod community that is already supporting the game on PC. Also clearly, the visuals and load times are supposed to be much better on PC.
I found a "cider" port of the the PC version for Mac that I am considering giving a try just to see if I can run it and check out the differences.
Yeah I have 2 Radeon HD4850's in CrossFire so I figure I should be ok...tough call :)
The PC version doesn't need a lot of horsepower or video power. It plays fine on my son's PC, which is 2-3 year old tech.

Yeah, my wife's been playing it on PC and it runs fine on my 2 year old comp.
This may be my favorite game in the last 10 years. I'm 40 hours in and have barely touched the main storyline. There's so much you can do, it's really a game that can be played the way you want to play it.
I don't play games but my friend talked me into playing a little of this. Spent about 20 minutes creating my character then another half hour running around. Couldn't get the hang of moving my head and running at the same time. But what little I did was fun.

first person games take some getting used to. I think its one reason the Wii was so popular...the controls on the best games are easy and intuitive. One neat thing about Skyrim is you have the choice to click the left joystick and the perspective zooms out to third person view. It might be easier to control that way for you Kenny. I think the combat might be harder though in third person.
Finally beat this game after putting 100 hours into it. Did all the factions, tons of misc. quests. It's a great game, a model to build upon for the future I say.
I'm taking a break until some bugs are patched out, there's supposed to be a big patch coming sometime in January. I ran into a snag where the Companions questline won't update past a certain point, so I am stuck in the middle without being able to finish. I'm able to go on and do other things but there's some elements of that quest that affects everything else I do in the game, so I'm going to quit until I can finish out those quests. I've gone too far to start over, anyway, that's just not gonna happen.
I just got Skyrim for Christmas! Loaded on my MacBook in Boot Camp, with some setting adjustments seems to run great and looks beautiful. All I did was create my character and escape the beheading. I want to wait till I get back home to really start playing. :)
Are you using mouse/keyboard or a gamepad?

Mouse/Keyboard. It's what I am most familiar with.
I don't think Ill ever get used to keyboard controls. The mouse is one thing, but WASD just boggles me.

I used to use the arrow keys for movement but they make them too small on laptops!
Great price! So tempting....

I LOVE Skyrim but have actually taken a break from playing to blast through the last Alien vs. Predator game. I needed some Colonial Marine Aline FPS break from the endless quests in Skyrim!
I had to start over due to losing my save (see the red ring thread :() and have just put the game aside. I've put over 100 hours into this over the course of my two plays and still haven't finished the main quest. I'll pick it up again, probably just to blow through the main story, faction side quests, and Daedric quests using some kind of guide to help me find the content, but it won't be for a bit because I'm feeling pretty burnt out on the game. You know when it starts to feel more like an obligation than a game then it's time to put it aside.
I have been playing Kingdoms of Amalur and really, really enjoying it. It is heavily influenced by WoW, in fact I've never played a game that felt more like a single player version of that game. The quests (yellow exclamation marks and all), level progression, skill trees, all are virtual clones of WoW. The writing is excellent, penned mostly by RA Salvatore who you might know from the New Jedi Order or as the creator of Drizzt D'Urden for the Forgotten Realms series. And the art design is gorgeous, based on the work of Todd McFarlane from Spawn and some early fantastic Spiderman series. All in all a really great game, with an amount of content that rivals Skyrim in scope. Highly recommended if youre a fan of the single player RPG.
Picked it up from steam last week, 33% off!
Now to finish portal 2, and find the time for this...
Make the time, Ricdude. You will not regret it!
