Title: Podcast # 345 - "Timescape"
Post by: Rico on August 21, 2011, 11:01:49 AM
The new podcast is now up and available featuring a whole group of us on Skype commenting on the TNG episode, "Timescape."  I want to thank Joe, Tim, Rick Moyer, Marko, Ramon, and Bryan for joining me yesterday for this fun time.  I'm not sure how much you will learn by listening to us, be we had a lot of fun!  Also, Rick Peete gives us a con report from Wizard World in Chicago (thanks Rick).  Enjoy the cast.

Yeah Skype call dynamic takes some getting used to, initially it's tough to break into the conversation what with lag and all.

Always just feel free to jump into the conversation or bring up something.  If I hear someone with a comment, I try to give them a chance to speak.  We're all used to that maybe a bit more.  Plus, seven of us is a bit tricky to handle and work out.

Yeah, I'm not exactly a shrinking violet...more of a bull in a china shop...but I tried to refrain  as best I could. My career is partially based around being able to talk and communicate and assert influence. It's hard to hold back sometimes. My Dad to this day has to tell me to shut up sometimes.

Listened to the podcast tonight. Sounds like you guys had lots of fun. Wish I could have hung out. Hope to make the anniversary get-together.

I also enjoyed Rick Peete's convention report.

I think it came off pretty well.  Definitely going to do this again.  Look for another episode to vote on and Skype about in September.  Maybe Voyager or DS9.

I thought the episodes audio came through pretty well when we weren't all yammering. :)

Yeah, the audio seemed fine overall. At some points the episode got loud and that mixed with our talking got a bit confused but that's bound to happen. I know when Film Sack does their commentary tracks they don't have any movie audio in the podcast, but I like it hearing what's going on.

Who knows, maybe next time I'll have Trek on Netflix so I don't get out of sync!

I was adjusting the audio during the whole Skype call.  Trying to tweak it and find a balance of our voices vs. the episode audio.  It's tricky to do because the added thing was some folks on Skype were also louder than others.  I tried to keep the episode low so it wouldn't overlap on our voices too much.  It's easier when I do this solo because I obviously know when I'm going to speak and I also try to wait for quiet places in the episode.  But overall, I think it worked pretty well.

It definitely needs the audio in the mix although I found that I tended to lock onto that and thus missed some of what was being said over the top of it.

Not having been involved in the original recording, I have to say that I found it all got pretty confused at a couple of points

You should have heard the preshow and post show talk!  ;)

I like how we got our iPad talk out of the way in the preshow. I think we've learned that you can't get us on Skype without inevitably talking about iPads.  :)

Yeah, especially since most of us on the call actually own one now.

Feathers/Mike - just another note on the audio.  It kind of is what it is.  A Skype group audio call is a complicated thing (especially with seven of us).  Add to that the episode audio and there will be places of overlap.  The alternative is no episode audio and possibly fewer people in the call.  But I was going for a more "party" atmosphere this time.

Perhaps compressing the final result to bring the volume levels closer together.

I think we need to do an all Ipad show on our Ipads.

Nope.  That won't work for two reasons.  Mainly all the audio is on the same feed/channel.  The other reason is you really don't want the episode audio to match the Skype call audio.  Again, as others who do things like Skype calls and podcasts can tell you, it's a tricky endeavor.

Well I totally enjoyed the show, I thought it was great and I'm amazed Skype held up.
Hopefully I can make the next one like Dan hopes too. But I'll have to pass on the iPad discussion as I don't have one.

I found it hard to tell the comments from the episode at times.  But it was probably worsened by the road noise.  ;)

What about not getting the episode audio at all and just leveling the skype call?  And if you really want to add the episode audio, you can do that on a separate track at a lower volume.

That seems like a good idea too, I guess the point is for the audio to be loud enough so you can sync while you're watching, but not loud enough to overtake our wonderful voices.
