Title: Podcast # 342 - Rico Appreciation Day
Post by: Rico on July 31, 2011, 09:16:47 AM
Well, it seems Darmok pulled a fast one on me and didn't do a Sci-Fi Jam podcast afterall.  It seems he and some sneaky others decided to do a podcast dedicated to little old me!  That was very nice of all of you guys and I'm very touched.  Anyway, thanks to Darmok (aka Phil) and all the rest of you for this special treat.  Here are some words from Darmok on this cast:

This weekend, Darmok pulls a fast one by inaugurating the first Rico Apprection Day. He has assembled some of his Treks In Sci-Fi friends to pay tribute to Rico for the impact he's had on their lives. In the almost six years of the podcast and forum, Rico has made many friends and inspired them to start their own podcasts. He has brought together a wide assortment of people from different countries who share a love of science fiction and embody the Star Trek philosophy of IDIC (Infinite Diversity In Infinite Combinations). The purpose of this week's podcast is to express appreciation for the man who started the Treks In Sci-Fi community with the goal of fanning the flames of everything Star Trek (as well as Sci-Fi in general). As time went by, Rico invited his listeners to contribute comments and even play a part in the series by hosting a podcast episodes. As a result, he fostered a vibrant, creative collective that continues to grow.

The most recent interview we did on Tales (Ben who reviewed the new Star Tours), heard about us from...Treks In Sci Fi! So, thanks for that too my brother.

Thanks guys.

This would have been a big flop if folks had not come through with the comments. I consider this more of a collaboration, our collective gift episode to Rico. Hopefully, it won't stop here. The more we all contribute, the more we show our appreciation and give him the support he needs. It would seem that the Treks In Sci-Fi community has become a society of its own that develops with each new active member.

The secret had to be maintained (at least I hope it was a secret). What's the fun when someone knows about their own surprise party? It was exciting and fun to pull this together as I wrung my hands together while emitting an evil cackle. I'm not sure if I've achieved my goal of making a grown man cry, but listening to the comments definitely makes me feel like I'm listening to a love-fest. :-)

Rico has impacted each of you in some specific way. Let him know that as you contribute to the community. Not just the "what", but the "why" and "how". Now, the upcoming sixth anniversary show has got to really rock with the comments you guys turn in!

Oh yeah...thanks for everything, Rico!

Sorry Will. The most public I could make it was asking people to submit for the "Sci-Fi Jam" (which I still plan to do sometime in the future) but checking in with me first. Those who contacted me got the real story.

Look at it this way, you'll have an opportunity to dig deeper and contribute to the sixth year anniversary. I look forward to seeing how much love will be showered out on that episode. So, start writing down notes for that great audio clip you'll be recording. :-)

Got through a good portion of this special show on my drive in to work this morning (great way to start the week).  You guys (and girls) are just the greatest!  There are times in the last year or two when I have thought about ending the podcast, but after all your words of praise and encouragement how can I stop now?  Anyway, again thanks for pulling all this together Phil.  Great job!

Thanks, Meds. I really appreciate your contribution. It was a great example of how a life path was redirected because of the TISF experience. I also now know a little about you as well.

I figured you and Dangelus (as well as our Canadian and Australian friends) would like the dance party stuff. And it's such good music that Americans who like the style of music can enjoy it even if they don't get the references. I've been playing those tunes a bunch of times since yesterday.

I listened today and it was a really well put together show.

I'm sorry I didn't get to send something in but my podcast contributions seem to have dried up completely recently. Call it a touch of nerves or self-consciousness, I don't know.

Equally, I don't have a 'Rico changed my life' story so perhaps wouldn't quite have had so much of interest to say.

It was good to hear everyone else.

Great podcast Darmok!

I thought it was very thoughtful and very sweet of everyone to send in comments of appreciation for the first Rico Appreciation day!

I know that just by listening to this podcast over the last few years has been awesome for me. I feel like I'm listening to friends talk about the same and different things that I like. I've also been encouraged to watch other shows such as The Big Bang Theory and also Donnie Darko. I love the comments that people send in. I also love hearing Rico talk about drinking his green tea. He always makes it very personal which is great. I also love listening to other people share his podcast.

Awesome podcast! Keep going Rico!

All the best!

Z

PS. When I was looking for podcasts to listen to I was immediately drawn in by the cartoon Spock picture for the podcast. I knew then that it had to be a great podcast!  :vulcan

Thanks Phil, I sort of chose that music for a few reasons: I always liked it, I had it close at hand, since I recently used it on the Tron podcast, and to signify the joint podcast I got to do with Rico.

That's cool. Very thoughtful.

I love the rhythmic interplay of the "Tron" music. Lots of going in and out of time signatures. My favorite Carlos piece that does that is "Geodesic Dance".

I've been catching up on TreksInSciFi, this podcast blew me away.  Good job Darmok and everyone else involved!

Many people only see this much love at a funeral or something when it's a little too late... it is great to hear how much Rico and the community here have enriched each other's lives so much.

I'll add my belated thanks too for all the entertainment.  Treks in Sci-Fi was a contributing inspiration for me to blog and do an audio cast.

There is a really positive tribe here, an impressive achievement as communities are hard to build.  Through sheer hard work, persistence and everyone being so respectful to each other Rico and everyone has created something really special.

Excellent thought. We all too often take the people in our lives for granted and don't express enough appreciation. After 911, Carlos Mencia did an excellent comedy routine that kind of touched upon that, but in the context of appreciating life (he ended the show by simply walking off the stage, his last words, being "Sometimes..."). I think we can apply that to people.
