Title: Time Machine Poll
Post by: Rico on July 24, 2011, 02:03:58 PM
Thought this might be fun.  Let's say you get hold of a time machine, but you can only make one trip with it, but can return when you desire.  What time period would you visit?  Feel free after you vote to describe your thoughts on this.

OK I've gone for the past. I have no desire to see the future purely for the fact I'd be either jealous I may not get to see it or horrified at what my kids/grand kids will have to put up with.
Now the past, I would really like to go back to when i was about 5, it may sound a bit weird but i have some great memories of the shops and parks, houses and schools which are either no longer there or have been radically changed. So it would be great to see if  my memory is as good as i think it is.

i'd have to go with the past. i've always dreamed of making a high score in asteroid and watching a trek series premiere... :)

Hmmm... I would definitely like to go to the past.  I might have the Temporal Police on my tail though cuz I might bring Marty's Sports Almanac back with me on my iPhone.... hee hee

I wouldn't go back further than the 60s though.  As an African American, I am not sure I really want to experience the level of blatant and violent racism that would certainly take place.

I go to the future, get some stock numbers and bounce back to make billions ...

I obviously picked the distant future.  I want to see us on other planets, flying around in FTL Starships!

Would using a time machine be considered insider trading? :)

Distant Future, cause I'd love to see where mankind ends up, whether good or bad.

I went for the past. Probably Victorian era or WWII era.

Distant past would be too risky as would the distant future. You don't know where you'd end up. Recent future would not appeal, too many spoilers! ;)

I'm the person that picked that I wouldn't go anywhere.  The past doesn't really appeal to me other than making a good setting for a book.  I'm a bit germphobic and it seems the further you go back in time the less people worried about about keeping things clean.  Also, since I was born in the more modern computer era, life even a few decades a go would just confused and frustrate me.  I'm kinda afraid of the future.  If I knew we were headed towards a more peaceful and open minded existence, I certainly would want to go to the future.  However, I'd be too afraid of stepping out of the time machine to find out Earth looks more like Venus because of the runaway greenhouse effect or to discover another asteroid hit the earth causing mass extinction.

Hmmm, that is a tough one.  I guess I would choose the far future in the hopes that it will be a better one.  Past is tempting though  - especially Ancient Rome.  Now if this Time Machine could take me to Middle Earth......

Frankly I'd take any of the options if I could (except the nothing one of course). They all would be awesome, but alas time travel doesn't exist... yet...

I'd like to do something nobel, like prevent a world war - but I've watched to much sci-fi and know that would just backfire.

So I'd do something more practical - like Biff did in Back to the Future.

I'd say something like -
"Hey, when Apple stock is in the tank at a few bucks a share, buy it all up - butthead!"    :roflmao

I'm a bit surprised by how many want to visit the past.  Very interesting.  Does that mean many of you are afraid of the future?

I think the problem with the future is that most likely, it won't be as cool as we think it will be.

Really?  You don't think so??  I actually think it will be far more cooler in some ways than we can imagine.  Just think back to how a person from only 100 years ago would react if brought to the present.  It would amaze them.  What will 100 years bring, or 500, or 1000?  I very much believe what my signature quote says.

I guess with certain things it would be way more advanced and with others it'd not be.

WHERE ARE OUR FLYING CARS?!

Wouldn't it be funny if we travelled into the distant future and Earth was like it was in the distant past? Back to the stone age because we just couldn't get along...

With my luck, I would choose the future and see a boring landscape devastated by climate change.  Rico - are you forgetting 'All Our Yesterdays' - the librarian might force you into the past...

You know, I just might take you up on that when I have a few thousand to invest. I might be seeing some royalties checks soon and I'm more than likely going to invest the bulk of my writting money if my job provides me with enough live on money.

After some thought, I picked Distant Future, since I can read about the past, but I will never get the chance to go far into the future, so would be cool to see what that would look like.

I have really been thinking about this.

I think I would want to go back and have a talk with myself.  As I get older, I see how all the things I have gone through have brought me to this point, but I think I have been far too trusting of people.  As a result a lot of things have happened to my family and to me personally that didn't need to hurt so bad.  A little insight into what was ahead for me back then would have helped.  ;)  So, a trip back 26 years ago might be cool.

Then of course if I could.... I'd go way back to see what dinasours looked like, then way ahead to see what we become.

phew.

;)

Rick, I understand the idea of going back to change ones own life, I just wouldn't want to change anything in my life. I've thought a lot about this before. Sure I've made mistakes, and taken some bad turns, and had hard times. And there were times I would have given the chance. Though I continue to have chaos and crazy adventures, but without all that I wouldn't have gotten where I ended up here. I wouldn't be who I am now, and I love who I am and where I am right now. So for me I'd rather not dare effecting the past, I'd like to see how everything turns out in the future, not in my life per se, but for the whole planet or galaxy.

I made the decision to go into the distant future without thinking about it. Just instantly knew that is what I would select.

I have now been reading these posts and trying to analyse exactly why I would instantly jump into the distant future. In my mind, I see the distant future as humanless. Mankind having long wiped themselves out and the Earth having reclaimed the planet and become a beautiful paradise.

Worryingly, I seem to be craving some kind of lonely and solitary existance...

...not sure I like this game

if you went to the distant future, you would have no clue if it would be like star trek or firefly. it would just be a mystery. however, with the past, at least you know what to expect.
then again, knowing what to expect may be just as bad. you could change something thinking it was for the best, when really bad things happen because of it (city on the edge forever). maybe not going anywhere would be a good idea.

I've thought about this a little too.  I definitely would like to have known what had been coming ahead in terms of work/job stuff, but overall I'm pretty happy with how things have worked out.

Anyone else still need to chime in on this?
