Looks like a new "Trek" game is coming for the summer of 2012 on XBOX 360 and PS3.  Read on!

Game News: Paramount Unveils New Star Trek Adventure
Source: Paramount Digital Entertainment June 3, 2011

Paramount Digital Entertainment confirmed today that Star Trek, licensed by CBS Consumer Products will be coming to the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, PlayStation3 computer entertainment system and Windows PC in summer 2012.

The game, which continues the adventure that director and producer J.J. Abrams envisioned with 2009's Star Trek, boasts a stand alone story filled with action-packed combat as Kirk and Spock must work together to stop a legendary enemy race bent on conquering the galaxy. With an original story and unprecedented co-op experience, the game casts players as Kirk and Spock for the first time ever, and you can see the first teaser image below.

"Star Trek challenges the boundaries of co-op gameplay with a galactic adventure that gamers and fans have never experienced," said Tom Lesinski, President of Paramount Digital Entertainment. "Working closely with the Star Trek filmmaking team throughout development, the game is sure to deliver AAA production values, a wide variety of gameplay and all the action you would expect from the hit franchise. This will be the definitive Star Trek gaming experience."

Star Trek features an original story by BAFTA award winner and God of War writer, Marianne Krawczyk, in collaboration with the writer/producers of the new Star Trek films, Bob Orci and Alex Kurtzman.

The game is under development by acclaimed Ontario-based developers Digital Extremes (Bioshock 2, Unreal Tournament, Dark Sector, The Darkness II), working closely with Bad Robot, K/O Paper Products and Damon Lindelof and published by Paramount Digital Entertainment through a license with CBS Consumer Products. Star Trek will be available in stores 2012.

Paramount Digital Entertainment will be providing a first look at the title to press during the upcoming Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in Los Angeles, June 7-9, 2011.

Found this footage on Shacknews.  No info on when it's coming out.  Presumably it's on the big 3 (Xbox 360, PS3, and PC) and will be released when the new movie hits.  Reminds me of Mass Effect a bit.  I believe this is the first time in a third person shooter game you can control Spock and Kirk.  check it out:

Well, I am getting Mass Effect vibes so maybe they grabbed the good mechanics from Mass Effect and produced a half decent game out of it. One can always hope.

Looks fun, the art style is very Mass Effect.  Though if it's using the Unreal Engine then most games look Unreal-y in that anyway, so it could be partially that I am picking up on.

Thats looks AWESOME!!!! And it comes out on my 25th Anniversary!! Coincidence...I don't think so! So wine (Dr. Pepper) and dine (hopefully somewhere cheap) the wife then talk her into letting me buy a $60 game, then go home and play it all night (not likely). I'll be Kirk and she can be Spock (she's sexy like Uhura though).

The thing I like is that while this game is set in the movie universe, it doesn't seem to be a tie in game. It looks like it'll have it's own story.

JJ probably wouldn't allow them much info on the upcoming film.  But I think we might get some little connections - at least to the 2009 movie (like visiting 'New Vulcan').

Some encouraging words from Paramount regarding this upcoming game:

http://www.polygon.com/2013/3/27/4150912/star-trek-the-video-game-wont-be-a-throwaway-piece-of-merchandise (http://www.polygon.com/2013/3/27/4150912/star-trek-the-video-game-wont-be-a-throwaway-piece-of-merchandise)

Star Trek: The Video Game 'won't be a throwaway piece of merchandise,' Paramount says

By Tracey Lienon Mar 27, 2013 at 8:30a @traceylien

Paramount Pictures' Star Trek video game will challenge the stigma associated with licensed games when it is released next month, according to the SVP of marketing, Brian Miller.

Speaking to Polygon during a demo of the upcoming third-person action adventure set in the J.J. Abrams Star Trek universe, Miller said both Paramount and the game's developer, Digital Extremes, were aware of the stigma of games based on movies, but both were still determined to make the game and "get it right."

"When we look at the stigma of movie-based games, we can kind of break down those challenges into three categories," Miller said. "One is there was never enough time to make a game that could stand up there with other AAA games. By the time you get all the assets from filming and you're ready to make the game, you've got about 12 months before the film comes out."

The second reason, Miller said, is working with the right creative people. Often, studios, publishers and license holders will clash over ideas, and the final result is a product of everyone's compromised vision.

"The game isn't being 'cranked out quickly as a throwaway piece of merchandise.'"

"And the third is just funding it correctly," he said.

According to Miller, Paramount Pictures addressed each of these problems early on to ensure that the game would not be marred by the issues that movie-based games typically experience. Star Trek has been in active development for three years, which Miller said is "an eternity" for a movie game. It's being published by Paramount, who holds the license to Star Trek and is responsible for the feature films. It's also being funded by Paramount, so the game isn't being "cranked out quickly as a throwaway piece of merchandise."

On the creative side, Miller said the studios involved also looked at what didn't work in previous movie games to learn what not to do.

"When we looked back at some of the movie games and why they didn't work, one of the reasons was you were basically aping what viewers had already seen," Miller said. "If you made a game directly off the last movie — now they go to the space dive, then they're gonna go to the ice planet — there was no chance to change up the narrative and give a gamer an experience story-wise."

Instead of basing the game on the 2009 film or the upcoming Star Trek Into the Darkness, the Star Trek video game is set between the two films, which gives the developers a chance to tell a new story that is also canon.

"It's important for us to explain to everybody that what we're trying to do is create a completely new, untold adventure of Kirk and Spock," Miller said. "We didn't want to ape what was in the last movie, we didn't want to try to repeat what you're going to see in the new film. We wanted to make sure that we had a game where you're watching this real battle back and forth between Kirk and Spock as they come across an enemy we've pulled from Canon to bring up-to-date in this new game."

Miller emphasized the importance of having both Kirk and Spock as playable characters in the game because the chemistry between them is a large part of what makes Star Trek appealing. Two players can play together in co-op mode, and in single-player mode an AI will control the other character. Both characters play differently, with Kirk exuding a brash, cowboy-like personality and Spock taking a more considered, logical approach.

When Paramount's Star Trek video game releases next month, Miller hopes that players will feel as they've gone on a new and authentic adventure with Kirk and Spock, and experience a story that can stand alongside the films.

Star Trek will release in North America on April 23 on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Windows PC.

Here's hoping. I will be getting it next month, changed my preorder from Aliens to this (and after playing Aliens I'm fairly certain I made a good call, sight unseen on this game). Licensed games are usually crappy, watch out for the new Walking Dead game....but the one from last year that was on XBox Live in episodes was awesome.

I love a good co-op game, so if that element is strong and there's some replayability, it'll be a winner.

They had better be right because we've gotten nothing but absolute trash license games this year and this is pretty terrible considering we had good license games like The Walking Dead by Telltale games last year. I will not be getting Star Trek the game on release, going to wait for the reviews to come in. Hope Paramount isn't lying.

It does sound suspiciously like marketing speak, and the guy quoted in the article is Senior Vice President of marketing, so that's why.  But I'll take him at his word since he said everything I wanted to hear.  And this game has Gorn!

Indeed...I rented the new Walking Dead game from Redbox...it is trash.  Just boring, repetitive, and no fun.  Not sure what they were thinking there, other than dollar signs after Telltale's massive success with last year's game which couldn't be more different than this new one.  I hope this new Star Trek game isn't tied to an online pass for co-op, because I will likely be renting this as well, and I'd like to get some co-op games in with you, Chris.

Yeah, I'll get with you after I get it and we can do some XBox live.

I do get suspicious when I'm told that a game isn't something....sort of like all the positive talk from the devs about Colonial Marines....and we REALLY need a great Star Trek game...I think Bridge Commander was the last one I played more than the initial playthrough.

That Voyager FPS wasn't too bad, and Encounters was good on PS2. Then Invasion on the original PS was pretty good too. Seems like we get one decent game per console cycle.

Oh yeah, I forgot about Elite Force, that was a pretty fun game. Legacy on the 360 was OK, the ships looked cool, but it was wasn't super.

Yeah, I've been playing it. A bit glitchy, and the co-op I did with my wife was pretty frustrating. So far it's about an average game.

Here's a fairly scathing review: http://www.polygon.com/game/star-trek/7743 (http://www.polygon.com/game/star-trek/7743)

My favourite line has nothing to do with the game:

We need more scathing reviews. These games being published is just....grrrr.

Aliens, Star Trek, Star Wars...after all of these clunk failures, I'd just rather the movie industry quit making games for their franchises. It's pretty obvious they don't care about making a good product. Just scam everyone for every bit they're worth and call it a day.

Getting sick of this...

Co-Op in this game is so frustrating I wouldn't bother. The single player experience is pretty average at best, not what I was expecting from the developer saying this wasn't a "throwaway licensed game". Since I paid 60 bucks I get to complain. I'm going to continue to play it, mainly because I never leave anything started unfinished. But I'm more interested in playing Injustice. THAT is a fun, licensed game that knows how to utilize the characters and gives the fanbase something that makes sense. A duck and cover shooter like Gears of War (not anywhere near as good) does not scream Trek to me. Just my educated opinion.

That's a great idea. Telltale knows how to make a great adventure game. I know they're working on season two of the Walking Dead, but I'd love to see them do a Trek game.

I wouldn't even mind if it's a shooting game if it's well thought out, and offered a REAL difference between playing Kirk and Spock. I imagine and action game in the vein of Mass Effect, that kind of depth in a Trek game would be incredible.

As much as I may or may not agree with this guy, he's damned irritating :)

Yes, he can be. But I just was amused by the fake good reviews, plus the game producer commenting on how well the game runs for him.

I'm always amused by Bryan's "Damn the Torpedoes" attitude. I salute you, sir.

I'm still going to get it for the PC, I liked ALIENS: Colonial Marines. My bar is set at "Did I have fun?" and the answer was yes for that game.

Well, good luck. I've already said my piece on CM. I refuse to get it. If you try co-op in Star Trek, don't sit there waiting too long for a co-op partner, it sounds like you could be there for hours.

I don't play co-op, I have zero interest in having an experience with other gamers online. You are always such a ray of sunshine, Tim. :)

Hey, I just believe you should get your monies worth. If they're going to phone it in on the game development, then sell it for $10, not $60. A game should never ever lean on its license as a crutch for bad gameplay. The Walking Dead by Telltale showed everyone how to get it done. And then Activision turned around and showed, with their version of the Walking Dead, what you don't do. A cynical cash-in. These companies can do better, they just choose not to. For whatever reason.

At the end of the day, I'm in it for the gameplay, not a "movie like" experience. If I wanted to see a movie, I'd go see a movie.

I'm holding on to my comments for the AWESOME podcast Chris and I are planning for you all in a couple weeks, all about this game as well as some actually really GOOD Trek video games.  Stay tuned!

Looking forward to your podcast with Chris on this and other Trek games.  For me all games have their good and bad points, but if you are entertained for a reasonable amount of time I'd say you got your money's worth then.  We all love "Star Trek" here, so I always figure that kind of tips the scales a little too.

Yep, and everyone's definition of "get your monies worth" will vary wildly, Tim.

this definitely has some good parts, the voice acting from the whole cast of the movie is the top of the list

Heck, I just spent 3 hours playing "Euro Truck Simulator" and had a blast. With gaming it really is to each his own.

Yeah, the game needs a patch, or update, or whatever. I'm at the end of a mission that took me a while, and a glitch is keeping me from going on. If I have to re-start the mission...I may shelve this bad boy. Games should be fun, not make you want to pull your hair out.

Maybe I'll go rent this at Red Box for $2 since I never went and bought it.

I rented Colonial Marines and had fun with it, 4 bucks hurts less than 60, and increased my enjoyment by reducing the feeling of getting boned by a game developer.

I am on the level where I fly the Enterprise and fight the Gorn ships. I am enjoying the game so far, the story is fun, the visuals are great, I just wish you could interact more with the environment. I like to walk around and explore but you can't make anything happen.

Yeah, they promised you could walk around the ship and interact, not so far anyway. The bridge is pretty to look at.

Yeah, I keep walking over to members of the crew but they just ignore me. WTF, I'm the frackin' Captain, show some respect!

http://www.polygon.com/2013/9/13/4726170/star-trek-director-j-j-abrams-emotionally-hurt-by-star-trek-the-video (http://www.polygon.com/2013/9/13/4726170/star-trek-director-j-j-abrams-emotionally-hurt-by-star-trek-the-video)

Director J.J. Abrams revealed he was "emotionally hurt" by the quality of Star Trek: The Video Game, believing his film Star Trek Into Darkness suffered because of it, GamerHubVideos reports.

Abrams and his team dropped their involvement with the video game spin-off once the direction of the game became clear, he said during a launch party for the film's DVD.

"The last game, which was obviously a big disappointment to me, was something that we were actually involved in from the very beginning and then we sort of realized it was not going in a place where we were going to get what we wanted, so we dropped out and they continued to do it despite... y'know." he said.

"To me the video game could have been something that actually really benefited the series and was an exciting, fun game with great gameplay and instead it was not and was something that I think, for me emotionally it hurt, 'cos we were working our asses off making the movie and then this game came out and it got, this isn't even my opinion, it got universally panned and I think that it was something without question that didn't help the movie and arguably hurt it."

Despite the disappointment, Abrams added that it isn't surprising for games based on films to be low in quality.

"I think that, the thing that we all know is that anyone who loves video games and loves movies," he said. "Very, very rarely does a movie based on a game, or a game based on a movie, really work. It usually ends up being something that everyone that goes to play feels like this was a marketing decision made by a room full of people that wanted to capitalize on a title. That's no way to make a game and no way to make a movie.

"The dream is, and we're working with Valve right now on a couple projects, is to say despite its existence, despite it pre-existing as a game, despite it existing as a movie, what makes this great? And starting from scratch, from a place of 'let's make this from the ground up great regardless of what's come before.' And that to me whether it's a video game or a book or a movie or a song, anything that is based on something else needs to exist on its own terms. And a lot of times these seem to exist as ancillary products in which case it will suck."

Star Trek: The Video Game received a 3 out of 10 from Polygon in a review that said: "Is there a worse fit for the world of Star Trek, that subversively powerful force of social equality and acceptance, than a brainless, cover-based third-person shooter? I submit that there is not."

Abrams is currently working with Valve to bring to life films based on the Portal and Half-Life universes. Polygon spoke with Abrams earlier in the year about the project in which he said of the project's plans: "It's as real as anything in Hollywood ever gets. Which is that we are really talking to Valve, we are going to be bringing on a writer, we have a lot of very interesting ideas."
