Title: Podcast # 333 - "Tron"
Post by: Rico on May 29, 2011, 06:45:22 AM
The new podcast is up covering the first "Tron" film with my cohost, JediJeff.  We go into quite a bit of detail on this one, play clips, and talk all about "Tron" and a bit on the sequel and what the future might hold for the franchise.  I'm really pleased at how well this one turned out and I want to thank Jeff for taking the time to record the show with me yesterday.  It was a lot of fun.  Enjoy the cast!

I have to thank you again Rico for letting me co-host the show with you, it was an honor and one of my Treks In Sci-Fi highlights for me. It was a lot of fun to look at this movie, and reminded me again how much I really enjoyed it, and the chance to talk and chat with you about it was awesome.

No problem Jeff it was great to have you on as a co-host for this cool film and it always is helpful to have someone else on to help cover things.

I finished the podcast this morning while getting stuff ready for the BBQ.  EXCELLENT!  I could have listened to a couple more hours of it.  I had forgotten how classic Tron is and how much it was an icon for geeky computer things back in the day.  In fact, Amy rented Tron Legacy last night and we watched it.  Was fun to see Flynn's and hear all the cool video games from the 80s.  How cool.

I remember playing the Tron video game at our skating rink.  It was such an awesome game with the Spiders, light cycles and all, and the cool big joystick was different than the rest of the games of the time, plus the sound kicked butt.  Ahh those were the days.

Thanks Jeff and Rico, excellent podcast!  Do more of them together, great fit.

Rico and Jeff's conversation about the film was a great way to review Tron.
And I thought of something Spock might have added considering that each frame of the computer world scenes (beside the few actual CG shots) required multiple exposures from separate film overlays.
This would be like creating the first big effects feature film with "stone knives and bear skins."

It's was my understanding that Disney intentionally suppressed the availability of TRON on DVD and via Netflix once they began production on TRON Legacy. From what I read, they were concerned that if a modern audience saw TRON prior to Legacy, they might be turned off by the slow, odd story and what now are less then spectacular effects and would impact Legacy's box office.

Never heard that story.  The movie hadn't been available for awhile before Legacy was even considered.  Disney typically tries to "vault" titles for a period of time to drive interest in the future.  But I suppose it's possible they might have held off longer.  Although, I think you could easily make the argument that it could hurt the box office too for people who wanted to know what happened in the first film before seeing the second.

Yeah, it seems very coincidental and good timing to have a sweet Blu-Ray edition ready for release along with the release of Legacy and packaging them together. I think they likely saw little value releasing a new DVD of TRON prior to Legacy, both in terms of sales and driving business to Legacy. Having people see TRON prior to Legacy would likely have been a net negative. Disney does vault their movies, but the lack of NetFlix availability was very peculiar. I couldn't even find it at Blockbuster months prior to Legacy's release.

Rentals and things like Netflix have license agreements too.  This is why you see things on Netflix streaming and then not on streaming, etc.  The agreements are not forever.  It wouldn't do Disney much good if they stopped selling a particular DVD, if you could just hop on Netflix and watch it.

I probably have further to travel then you Pete to find Poutine, as not much of it out here in western Canada. But as a Canadian, I will allow a trip to Tim Hortons to replace the poutine requirement. Actually maybe there will be better ambiance if you actually listen to the podcast at a Tim Hortons.  :roflmao

Tim Hortons!  Now that I think I can manage - I will face the general direction of Alberta - standing on my toes to look over Saskatoon, and then turn to the right to face Toronto - Hot Chocolate Supreme raised in salute to both.  :)

Just got through the podcast on my run in the heat. Great show guys! I grew up watching this movie (I was born in 81 so I was a little over 1 year old when it was released), I've seen it many times. One thing I always remark is that as I grew up and learned more about computers I would come away with new insights after re-watching.

For example. understanding what the bit was and why it could only answer yes or no (1 or 0), the beam of light that the solar sailor ran along was a data bus (shipping data to other parts of the system), the I/O port was connected to a physical port on the user terminal, etc. Since I really grew up in the beginnings of the "personal" computer, it took awhile for me to understand the concept of a mainframe.

I'll always remember looking at my dad's Apple II (and slightly later his IBM PC with the 8088 processor and *gasp* 640 KB of RAM) and imagining the Tron world inside of it.

I could only imagine what one of my web systems would look like as a Tron program, I think it would be schizophrenic. Programs then were single user, single threaded, systems I build today handle thousands of simultaneous requests!

It is still a good film!

The kids watched it for the first time a few months ago on VIDEO! (Yes, we still have some). They seeme to enjoy it.

It was fun to relive it (and two voices work as well as one in a podcast environment), thanks.

I got a little behind and just finished this one yesterday. I hate to admit it but I have never seen either of the Tron films. After hearing the podcast I think the best way to check them out would be on blu-ray. You guys had a lot of good info concerning the Tron movie and I always like that behind the scenes stuff! Good job!
