No one is more excited than the HitFix crew for the long awaited return of "The Muppets" to the big screen. Unfortunately, the film's new teaser poster, which debuted today, has us a little confused. The image of Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, Fozzy Bear, Gonzo and Animal walking toward the viewer is great and iconic. The tagline, however, "They're Closer Than You Think" has us stumped. The Muppets are...closer than you think because the movie is opening in November? The Muppets are...closer than you think because...? We'll just have to trust Disney on this one.
In any event, the comedy (with an appropriate number of new and classic songs) stars Jason Segal and Amy Adams with rumored cameos from everyont from Zach Galifianakis to Ricky Gervais to Katy Perry. And don't be surprised if it's one of the biggest hits of the upcoming holiday season.
"The Muppets" opens nationwide on Nov. 23.
No Muppets should be seen from the waist down. It's just weird looking.

I was thinking the same thing. I hope they aren't CG!
"Closer than you think"...maybe 3D?

my thoughts exactly. p.s. muppet star trek! Sesame Street: Spaceship Surprise Next Generation (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7xXY_5NLCNY#)
ah, muppets and trek, perfect combination. ;D
I've never seen that before! Typically when I think of Star Trek and Muppets, my mind goes to Pigs in Space. What an excellent parody. :)
the space ship looks like darth vader's helmet in the beginning ;)
I was a huge Muppet fan...watched every episode of the Muppet show the day it aired, even would force myself to stay up late with my Dad to watch the pretty inappropriate (for the time) Muppets segments on the early Saturday Night Live episodes. Also loved Fraggle Rock, and watched that show all the time with my little bro. I had the original Muppet Movie on video disc (the precursor to laser discs) and watched the scene with Steve Martin at the rude waiter over and over again because I found it so hilarious.

"Green With Envy" - Official Movie Trailer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6CloKbXtD28#ws)
FUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
From some of the shots in that trailer I suspect it will be in 3D and that some shots may have CGI elements although it looks like traditional puppets for most of it.
Looks like fun!

There are NO puppets in this movie. None. Not one.
X is absolutely right, there are a total of ZERO puppets in this...
Really?
Really.
Doesn't look all CGI to me.
It isn't.
:)
/me facepalms at Dangelus....
In other ramblings, looks interesting. :)

Muppets...not puppets...:) There's a difference.
Right. I was referring to puppet in the generic as a physical thing. A Muppet is a puppet. They'd still be Muppets if they were CGI but they wouldn't be puppets! :)
ok! so we understand that muppets and puppets are different things... odd. i always thought that muppet was a style of puppet...
we do all realize that we're thinking up technical things to explain puppets/muppets?
all i'm saying is that it's more fun than i thought it would be. ;D
Muppets are puppets ... yes. Like a Bentley is a car. It is a type of puppet, but far more than a ford focus, if we're continuing the car analogy.
Muppets imply several different styles of traditional puppet type, usually with element of hand puppets, stick puppets, and some include marionette work. Some also include multiple hand rigs and some even have full body rigs.
Muppets are also exclusive to the Henson Muppet Shop, creatures that did not come out of the muppet shop are puppets even if they have muppet like features.
Take Yoda. While some have called him a Muppet, he's actually a puppet because he wasn't made by the Henson Muppet Shop. (yeah I know it's complicated)
This is also why the characters on Farscape aren't Muppets. They were build by another branch of Henson and aren't allowed the muppet name.

What's the difference between a muppet and a puppet?

Absolutely nothing. This is like asking "what's the difference between a poodle and a dog?" Think about it - a poodle is a dog, but not all dogs are poodles. So a muppet is simple to figure out: it's a type of puppet (usually placed under the category of 'mouth puppets'). Not all puppets are muppets though, and not all mouth puppets are muppets.
A simplified family tree. As noted in the image, this is not a complete tree, and many types of puppets can overlap categories. Also note that the muppet-type puppet is just one of many forms of puppetry.
But there is something tricky about the term 'muppet'. Technically, the only people who can use that name is The Muppets Studio (a part of the Walt Disney Company) as it's a registered trademark. If we're talking about any muppet made by the Studio, we're talking about it in the official capacity: in this case, a muppet is a certain type of puppet made only by the Studio, and is different to all other puppets for that reason.
Interestingly, there is some controversy over the reason behind the name 'muppet'. Most people believe it's because Henson combined 'marionette' with 'puppet' to come up with 'muppet'. However, Muppet Wikia and the Straight Dope, suggest otherwise. They state that Henson just liked the sound of the word 'muppet'.1
But here on this site, and elsewhere, you'll find people talking about muppet-type puppets or muppet-style puppets... even rod arm puppets or glove arm puppets (the first uses rods for operating the hands, the second uses gloves and human hands in place of the puppet's hands). What's the difference? Nothing. It's the same methodology of puppet building, similar character styles, similar materials. It's just we prefer not to get sued for infringement of copyright, so we use a different term when referring to our muppet puppets. In this case, any muppet not made by the Muppets Studio is a muppet-type puppet, and we're talking about them in an unofficial capacity; a muppet-type puppet is a certain type of puppet made by anyone, and is simply a term used to refer to a particular building method or design of a mouth puppet.
Does that make sense? Again, the simplest way to remember it is with the dog analogy. A muppet or a muppet-type puppet is a type of puppet, just as a poodle is a type of dog.
Additionally, there is no such thing as a 'muppet finger' puppet or a 'muppet shadow' puppet, etc. It's most likely that those who are using those terms are confusing the word 'muppet' with the word 'puppet', because they don't know much about puppets and have only been exposed to Henson's work. See the complete list of puppet types for more info.
... After thinking about it, I thought I would also add a few words about Henson's Creatures. Jim Henson and his company often made - and still do - 'creatures'. These are separate designs from muppets, and are animatronic puppets. Most familiar to people are Henson's Creatures presented in films like The Dark Crystal and Labyrinth. So it should also be clear to members of the public that not all Henson puppets are muppets either; in fact, these days the Henson company also do digital animation too!
i get it now! ;D kinda like squares and rectangles too.

I actually started crying the first time I watched this trailer. SOOOOO excited.
Just saw this and it brought back a lot of memories. There were quite a few cameos including one fellow we all know and love? I think this was his first movie premiere - well cast for the part. Wink-wink, nudge, nudge.
Cool. Merged with the main Muppet movie thread.

any hints as to who? :)
I actually really enjoyed this film. We saw it Thanksgiving Day. Unfortunately there was only about 10 people in the showing we attended at 12:30 PM. The film has a lot of laughs with plenty of Muppet in jokes and their corny humor. It also has one thing that most films today are sadly lacking and that is "heart". I would give it a solid 4 out of 5 stars.

fair enough. (spoiler button maybe?)
I think you can find most of the actors in the film here:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1204342/fullcredits#cast (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1204342/fullcredits#cast)
There are also quite a few references to previous Muppet films. Some obvious, and some not so. I even noticed that occasionally some lines of dialog that were the same. Of course, I'm a bit Muppet-obsessed...
My kids all loved it, my wife too. My wife said her favorite part was a familiar song near the end, where she said she actually almost shed a tear. I didn't go, had to work.
The Muppets feature in an new movie advert for a cell-phone company over here on the UK mainland. It's great...enjoy! :)

I DID shed a tear. Brought me back to being 5 and seeing the original in the theatre. I'm a pushover for nostalgia.
