Right click on the file link above and try to save it to your machine - don't just left click it.  That will make it try to stream which might not work for you.

Dunno why, but my CPU just couldn't handle the video which is...strange.  (Via iTunes).  So I switched it over to my iPad and watching it atm...(its running just fine too)

Yeah, sorry about that.  I could encode it smaller at lower quality if there is enough need or call for it.  One day I'll have better gear & better software to do this with.

Going to have to download and transfer this the old fashioned way. Doesn't seem to want to play with my preferred streaming methods. Transfer speed a little slow which may account for it.

Looking forward to watching! :)

Thanks Kenny, glad you liked it.  Nope - that montage was off of Youtube.  I think I have it running on the main page in the Featured Video box.  I liked it a lot too.  If I had more time, I would have edited one.  But only so many hours on a Sunday to do a show.  ;)

Terrific show and great to see some of our own! I'm looking forward to Super 8, I had sort of forgotten about that one due to the flood of comic book movies, which I am sort of ambivalent about. Was there an audio sync problem with Tim's video?

Yes several of the listener videos (tim & rick) and a trailer or two were out of sync.. at least on my end. But it didn't take away anything from the show.

Yeah, same here.  My original video is fine but for whatever reason the audio got desynced on Rico's end.  But it didn't hurt the show for me.

Sorry about the sync issues.  It has to do with converting video formats and I didn't have time to go back and try and fix it.

For future reference, files in .mp4 are best for me to use.  I have the most issues with the whole Mac to Windows thing.  So, if you can encode to an .mp4 or even .mpg that works best on my end.

P.S.  Tim - can the Movie Maker thing on your iPad encode to formats other than .mov?
Title: Re: Vidcast # 329 - Summer '11 films
Post by: KingIsaacLinksr on May 03, 2011, 09:15:48 AM
Not from the iPad app no.  You can export to sites like YouTube and such, but no specific format beyond .mov.  They probably are expecting you to use the iMovie desktop or the PC-related apps that can convert mov.

There are other movie editing apps but I haven't looked into them yet so it's possible they export to .MP4

This is fairly typical of Apple made apps.  They are great working apps, but have some limitations like that.  I think I have a program that converts .MOV to something better if you want me to do that next time, I didn't even think about the format when I sent it off to you.

On an unrelated note, can we please streamline the video codecs already?  It is really getting silly at this point.

.mov is basically .mp4 with a couple of tweaks and content of the container can easily be switched to an .mp4

For example I think Quicktime has an export feature that will pass thru the content for you and there are plenty of open source programs that will do the same.

You'd need the pro version of QuickTime to do the export but there are plenty of free solutions. Xvid4PSP is a good all round converter / remuxer and for re-encoding to can't beat Handbrake.

If you need specific help you know how to reach me. ;)

They are more different than you might think Dan.  It also depends on the bit rate of the encoding and so forth.  I actually used Quicktime to export the .mov files sent to me and convert them to .mp4.  But it still ended up with sync issues.  One of the troubles is when I put all the clips into Pinnacle Studio they are in various size formats, bit rates, etc.  Then I encode all that to an iPod compatible file for the vidcast.  Most of the times it's worked pretty well.  But for some reason this time there were some sync issues.

Yeah when you have to reencode various clips to the same format, bitrate etc then you can get these issues.

I was just commenting that it's possible to remux the contents of one .mov file directly into an mp4 as they usually are just h264 codec these days. Sometimes the audio needs converting especially if it's 5.1 AC3, to AAC. It's pretty straight forward when dealing with just one video file.

If you have a Mac and Final Cut it actually really easy to use any Mov file, but I sent you Rico MP4 for the coding reason and for the size/quality issues with rendering MOV files in Final Cut. But I had trouble the other day with YouTube because my Mov file was encoded differently. It needs to be H264 for YouTube and probably whenever using it in Windows.

Both of which many of us don't have, Final Cut is slightly spendy isn't it?

Just finished this today. I really enjoyed another great podcast and it was cool to see everybody. And I'm glad to know that Kenny is looking so foward to the Pirates movie!  ;D Just kidding Kenny. I never really got into the Harry Potter movies but I hope you enjoy it.
The 3 movies I'm looking foward to the most are #1 Captain America! I cant wait for that one!! #2 Is Green Lantern I just think that it looks like it was well done. And tied for #3 is the Pirates 4 and Cowboys and Aliens. Pirates just looks its going to be fun! And how can you not like Harrison Ford in a sci-fi movie.
Lots of good movies coming our way!

If you mean the red one behind me at my desk, it's just a normal digital clock.  Probably the time changes are due to pauses in the recording I was doing.
