CinemaCon: Pixar Attends Monsters University

March 29, 2011

Walt Disney Pictures officially announced today at CinemaCon that their Monsters, Inc. follow-up will indeed be a prequel and will officially be titled Monsters University.

Featuring the characters that first appeared in the hit 2001 Pixar film, Monsters University will again cast the voice talents of John Goodman and Billy Crystal in the roles of Sully and Mike, presumably telling the tale of their first meeting and their scare-filled education.

Monsters University will arrive in 3D and 2D theaters on November 2, 2012, following the June 22nd release of Brave, Pixar's first non-sequel since 2009's Up.

Ooooh!  Am I fooling anyone when I take the kids to see movies like this, just so I can watch too?

Are you guy kidding about having to take your kids so you can see these types of movies?

If your not kidding can I ask why you feel this way.. are you embarrassed to be seen alone (or kidless) watching a CG/Animated movie? Is it a macho thing? I'm just wondering as I have no kids and I've never been embarrassed to go to a animated movie alone or with friends.

I don't have kids either, but the wife and I did take my mom to see Wall-E. Great movie. If I want to see a movie I'm going no matter what kind it is. I really liked Monsters Inc. as did the wife. She has a little stuffed Sully hanging from her rearview mirror in her Rav4. We will be there!

Honestly, on the rare occasions when the wife and I have time without the kids for a movie night, Pixar isn't what we're going to see.  I think the last movie we saw in the theatre was Inglourious Basterds, to give you an idea of how often it happens.

Mostly, I enjoy being able to share these movies with the kids. I enjoy the tech side of it (the hair in wind effects in Kung Fu Panda are amazing, as are the gravel chunks in Wall-E).  And they get to see some really cool storytelling.

Fun for all of us to share, what's not to love?

I don't know what they can do to make the story as good as Monsters Inc. But I trust Pixar will make something fantastic.

My boys are going to freak out, especially my youngest.  Monster's Inc is by far his favorite animated film, we've seen it about 75 times now.  I cannot wait to take him to this.

Typically if my wife and I go for a movie on 'date night' - we won't see an animated film.  That is something that we take in with the family.  My comment was more tongue in cheek, but when I think about it - I really only catch that type of film with the kids.  If I was dying to see it, I wouldn't mind going without them.  For other films - like John Carter or Prometheus, etc - my wife just isn't into the genre (although she loved Tin Tin), so I have an old friend that will hit the movies with me.  The good thing is that Pixar makes films that we can enjoy on different levels.

My only restriction is I generally won't go to a movie on my own. I don't have any problems with it, it's just something I like doing with other people.

A solo cinema experience had never appealed to me until about 5 years ago. The family really wanted to watch something that I didn't and another movie was showing that I was desperate to watch (I forget what exactly)

I ended up going into a different screening than them and meeting up outside. And I found I really enjoyed the solo experience. It's now something I try to do semi-regularly....at least one of the big titles a year that doesn't appeal to the family.... Last film I saw solo was Prometheus.

Maybe it's because I don't have alot of friends that share my taste in entertainment, but I constantly go to the movies alone.  Also nobody I know has any interest in going to midnight premieres either, so I'm always at those by myself.

As far as going to see a Pixar flick by myself, that just wouldn't happen now that I have kids, but IMO it doesn't rank anywhere near as high on the "creep scale" as, say, going to a Chuck E Cheese without kids would.

As I said, nothing against it at all, there's just quite a few other things I would rather do on my own.

Just saw this tonight with the family.  It was a lot of fun - and had some great moments.  Not my favorite of the Pixar family - but a solid performer.
Some of the previews for other films don't look that great to me - like 'Planes' which is a pure Disney film - but set in the 'Cars' universe...
