Just got the new podcast up. Had fun looking back at the great stuff from 1999 (and there was a lot of it). I try to hit the highlights and play some listener comments too (thanks for those). Hope everyone enjoys the show! :)
P.S. This podcast might have the cutest intro segment ever!

The suspense is killing me! I must be patient....I will listen on my commute in the morning to hear the glorious news of my certain victory!!!!
I swear if I loose again I'm hoping a flight to Detroit and there will be trouble!!! :boxing
;D
Galaxy Quest - DVD, Blue Ray, and Ipod versions here. My favorite comedy movie of all time! Great pick Rico.

Great podcast, Rico. :)
And Vartok- As I was listening to the podcast just now, I kept searching and searching for more information on the film you reviewed...
LOL I even considered signing up for Netflix. No wonder I had trouble tracking anything down! :)
Great show Rico! :)
Another fun podcast Rico.. enjoyed everyone's comments and great music review Rick.
Although I am devastated by my loss in the contest, the winner was so well deserved! Ryan's daughter was cute beyond words! :D
What was the name of the movie Vartok reviewed again?
Hey Bryan if you think about it this way you were only a "B" short if winning! ;)
Loved Rick's song reviews. For a minute I thought he was going to do a parody based on "1999" and got really excited being a Prince fan.

I know, when he first announced the name, my heart skipped a beat! Could it be?!!! Alas, no...
Your time will come. ;)
It was a real fun show to do. Keep in mind, those that entered the contest and I didn't play your "Trek - Intro's", I plan on using them during the coming weeks. And I'm sure I'll be using little Claira's again. Just too cute!
I just got an email from our prize winner Ryan and he said they don't have a Blu-Ray player and just entered the contest for fun. So he offered the set up to Bryan. So Bryan - YOU WIN! Shoot me your address brother!
WOW!!!!! I have a few prepared words. First I would like to thank the Treks in Sci Fi Academy for this wonderful honor and my agent Rico for inspiring a poor kid from Greenwich, CT to never give up and reach for the stars! And my new best friend Ryan and his daughter Claira. :cheering :cheering :cheering :cheering
My friends, we have today witnessed history in the making.
Congrats Bryan!!!
I loved the look back.. thanks for the show.
Two mentions Id like to make for that year are the animated show "Batman Beyond" and the film "Fight Club".. both of which I'm a fan of.
Haha awesome Bryan! Knew you'd get there eventually! :)

I haven't covered animated stuff much in these look backs. But I was a big fan of "Batman Beyond."
@ Bryan, boy, talk about taking candy from a baby; even Kirk wouldn't do that.
The fake movie was Journey to Eden (not listed in IMDB, I checked first, but does sound kind of familiar doesn't it?). The voice of Gary Sinise was edited from the movie The Imposter, used to add credibility at the beginning. And the music was partly from Halo Reach, because it sounds so good.

Great Podcast! Ryan's daughter Claira was so adorable. Lots of good movies came out in 1999. I had totally forgot about Galaxy Quest. Nice trick, Vartok! :)
Awesome fun podcast, great comments and Clara was a awesome addition.
So Bryan won by default, not really a win is it Bry, bit of a sympathy win really. ;) lol ( best hide )
The word from this podcast that I thought was amusing was "sprinkle." I kept thinking that maybe I should get some doughnuts or ice cream with sprinkles. I liked the use of the word "sprinkling" too.
"Never Give Up! Never Surrender!" Galaxy Quest was awesome! Loved it! Thought that Alan Rickman made a great Spocklike character and that Tim Allen made an awesome Kirklike character. When this movie came out, I thought that it was perfect that both Allen/Alans were in the movie. They're like yin and yang. Maybe it's just me but they definitely worked well together. A lot of great bantering!

'Twas a bit of charity...but I'll take it. :)
Great show! I had one thing I wanted to toss out there though. The camera spinning that was made famous in the Matrix wasn't actually created by the Matrix. In a case where I hate to give credits where credit is due, Species II, which came out a year earlier created the tech for the shot and had a single shot in the movie where the guy's head regenerated in slow motion as the camera spun around him. While the digital effects were not new, the Matrix was a better film and got the credit for it. I know it might sound like a nitpick, but I think the guys that actually invented the shot should one day get credit for coming up with that bit of tech.

Did I even talk about that one specific camera shot?
Rico- GREAT SHOW! loved it. So many things I didn't know.
Vartok, you nerd. I was so excited about seeing that movie. I thought..... 2005? Why didn't I see that. And after enjoying Monsters that you reccomended I thought... great stuff! CAN'T WAIT! Nerd.
The intro was beyond cute. LOVED IT!

You did when you mentioned that scence in the beginning when Trinity jumps up in the air while surrounded by the cops and freezes int hat bird like position while the camera revolves around her.
Oh, and loved Rick's music review, although that Korn song was an odd inclusion, I don't even recall it. And Vartok got me good, I was IMDB'ing that movie all morning!

Ditto on most of the things you said. I, however, do remember the Korn song. I believe that they had a cartoon video to that one that was based on the album cover and had kids with guns and a magic bullet.
you are correct X.

Hmmm, I didn't think I said that, I thought it was one of the listener audio clips. Maybe Kenny's audio clip.
Yes, actually it was Kenny who mentioned the specific scene with Trinity. You mentioned it's been so copied that everyone who uses it should send the producers of the Matrix a check, I think that's what Chris is referring to.

Not to keep this going, but that isn't exactly what I said or was referring to. There is some paraphrasing going on related to what I said. But I will stand behind that there are many effects, scenes, and digital camera work in "The Matrix" that have been used in many other things since and were pioneered in that film. What generally has happened over the years in effects is that once some new technique is established it is used from then forward. The first "Star Wars" film with effects by John Dykstra and crew are another good example of this.
Don't look at me, I never even saw Species II and have no idea what Chris is going on about! I have no dog in that fight, take it up with X. To me, all of this camera work, slow mo "bullet time" stuff was brand new in the Matrix, so I agree it was the seminal film for this kind of thing.
Okay guys, I wasn't accusing anyone of anything. I was merely adding to the discussion. I personally dislike Species II. If it wasn't shown perfectly in frame when you went to see it at the cinema, you could see the boom mics in the shots. That being said, I mentioned what I did because even a sucky movie sometimes makes something nice and some of those elements from sucky movies (Eraser, Species II) were delivered in a better overall package in the Matrix, but it shouldn't take away from giving credit to the guys that did it first. It also wasn't an attack on anyone's comments.
Admit it, you have a crush on Natasha Henstridge...I know I did. :ohbaby Was she even in Species II.....naked?

Like I told my wife. Even Natasha's breasts couldn't save that movie.
I forgot to mention that my offspring Jenna (of 2010 Star Trek fan film fame) helped me gin up the fake Journey to Eden at IHOP (breakfast for dinner night) just before I recorded it. She was back from OSU for Spring Break and I took her out to dinner to enjoy her company before she went back. Once she got into it she was helping with the names and plot line and challenging anything that sounded too obvious. So I should have given her credit at the end. I did use her name as one of the children on the Gaia. We were having a good time thinking about how this charade would go over. Later.

Just finished listening to this podcast this morning. Vartok, Vartok I wrote the movie down to look it up on netflix. Great April Fools joke! I found Farscape on Netflix so will be watching them soon. Really liked the intro. CUTE! If I'm not mistaken Rick M. said something like "how can you forget the song Liva Loca by Ricky Martin." I CAN!!! :ohmy Looking foward to your next year in review.
Argh! Vartok, you had me hook line and sinker on Journey To Eden, I thought it sounded way too close to another scifi movie I like, Lost In Space and some others. Good one!
Great podcast as always guys :)

Rico, I got my DVD's today! They are awesome, thnk you so much to Ryan and Claira for gift their win to me. :cheers

Great! But, I think you mean you got your Blu-Ray's! ;)
Indeed, and they are sweet! I LOVE The Universe and Life After People and look forward to the others!
I was totally wrapped up in Vartok's tall tale until I started to think about the gene pool represented by three(?) families at which point I started to come just a little bit unglued from the topic. I still didn't realise it was a fake though.
I loved Galaxy Quest (after being dubious about it before seeing it) and, more surprisingly, discovered that my wife sat down and watched the back again on her own recently. (OK, she did say there was nothing else on, but still...)
Farscape is on my 'classic must see' list for everyone else. I watched that through from the start and really need to do so again.
GAK I searched everywhere for Journey to Eden, I so wanted to watch it. I think mainly because it was a scifi movie i havent seen!
I'm sooo sad to see it wasn't real
Hi Rico, I was able to listen to podcast 324 last week. great podcast. I do remember most movies form 1999. One of my favorites was the Phantom Menace. I remember when I walked out of the movie at the end, I really felt that I had seen one of the Best t movies in a while. though some ma disagree. I liked Bartok's comments on the movie joury to Eden. that really had me going as I am sure it did most everone.
Hi guys/girls,
I've just finished listening to an earlier podcast on the films and TV of 1999. The film The 13th Floor was mentioned, and I just wanted to add a few comments on this film. Incidentally, it's now available on NetFlix in the UK - and I imagine it might also be there in the US NetFlix and other countries if you fancy searching for it.
The 13th Floor is, like I believe another reviewer commented, a very Matrix-like film. Although many had an accurate premonition of the ending, it's still a valuable addition to your viewing. Though similar to The Matrix in character, the plotline is somewhat different. TTF isn't merely an inferior attempt at the Matrix idea. In fact, Thirteenth Floor is perhaps more effective in generating a serious doubt about our own reality!
A long time after watching TTF I discovered an interesting fact.. I was watching a German film (subtitled!) called World on a Wire - and noted the similarity of this early outing to TTF. I thought the plot was a little too close! According to Wikipedia, Thirteenth Floor relates to a modern version of a 1960s book called Simulacron-3. The German film was inspired by this novel (in fact, I think TTF may be based on the earlier German film, though I'm uncertain on this).
World on a Wire dates back to the 1970s. Although rather slower moving than Thirteenth Floor, it's interesting to see the virtual reality idea being created by scientists based on pre-microchip technologies. The film shows the idea of venturing into simulated or fake realities isn't a recent idea - even in terms of screen sci-fi. Though I think TTF is a more entertaing film, WOAW was quite cerebral and impressive for a 70s film. Or maybe German sci-fi was ahead of England and the US in this area? It's not exactly a vital purchase, but if you do find a cheap copy of World on a Wire it's worth checking out.
Thanks for the comments. Merged this with the podcast topic.
