Title: Picture my Uncle took of the I.S.S. last night!!
Post by: Bryancd on March 08, 2011, 04:02:54 PM
Check out this amazing picture of the ISS taken by my Uncle in Armonk NY last night using a new 400mm lens on his digital camera! You can see the solar panels, I'm trying to see if I can make out the shuttle.

I think I see the shuttle docked to the upper right corner.  I've heard crew on board the ISS talking on the ham radio.  I tried replying to the call but my neighbor down the road a bit with a better set up and a bit more power was able to get the QSO.  I've used equipment on the ISS many times in the past though to relay a VHF signal using a data mode known as packet to send messages to hams all over the US.  A little more info on the ISS and ham radio at http://www.issfanclub.com/ (http://www.issfanclub.com/) where I have some moderator privs.

It must have been a clear night. I'm pretty sure the light polution around here would probably obscure it almost completely from view.

Oh, you can see it in the middle of a city! It's very bright and moves very quickly across the sky as it passes. It would look like a very bright, fast moving star. There are a few web sites which will tell you when and if it's passing within view of where you live. I have seen is dozens of times.
