Title: Digital publishing and comics
Post by: Rico on February 23, 2011, 07:15:07 AM
There's a good article at the link below about digital publishing, comics, and more.  The article is about two years old now, but I like many of the things the author has to say and comment on.  Give it a look when you can:

As a college student, I can't spend lots of money on books, heck I already spend too much on college books! I also can't spend tons of space on books or comic books.  Just my own private collection was too much and I had only just started. (which I sold a while back)  So taking either my book or comic book collection with me that I might have collected during my high school years would be impossible.  Digital has changed the landscape in this regard.  Cheaper titles and only a few hundred megabytes on my device.  Both an instant win to me.

Granted, as a student I don't expect to have a giant collection, but I have a collection that just doesn't fit in a dorm room nor very well into a regular apartment.  And the guy makes some good points on the technology. It's not perfect, but I think one day it will finally get better adopted.

I'm assuming you opened this up to debate right?  ;)

Oh, I certainly understand cost concerns.  I just thought someone who could afford both an iPhone and an iPad could buy a few comics each month. ;)

I love that they are making whole runs of series available digitally for affordable prices.  It absolutely blew my mind when Marvel released those sets of Spiderman, Xmen, FF, Hulk, etc. on DVD for as low as 40 bucks new, and those sets contained scans of EVERY COMIC in the series from the 60s to current.  Such a thing wouldn't be possible through traditional collecting obviously, at least without spending thousands and thousands of dollars and spending time hunting down individual issues.  For someone just interested in reading the stories digital publishing is a huge boon.

Agreed Joby.  While I still love paper comics to read, the many boxes of comics I have around are starting to get in the way.  I've been tempted lately to sell a bunch off.  I've always been more into the reading and stories anyway.  Once I snag an iPad, I think I just may start going to reading all the new stuff coming out in digital form only.

Oh sure we could.  But many won't.  Actually its funny on a related note, but a guy who does the Instapaper app for the iPad/iPhone said that if he got 1% of the iOS population to buy his app, he would be set for life.  Crazy thought to me.  (which it only costs $4.99)

But I plan on buying a lot more comics from Dark Horse in the coming months via their iPad app.  We have no local stores that sell their product and $1.99 per comic is easy for me to pick up once in a while and the storage space is so easy.  :)

This is one thing I'm looking forward. I'm going to love reading more comics again with the iPad. The iPhone is just to small and fiddly for these purposes.
