I had not seen this version of Battlestar - that was a good review and stirred up memories of those days.

With the successful Star Wars / Star Trek movies, the TV studios must have been in a race to cash in too.
At least they didn't try and turn it into a variety show. Those where popular at the time and cheap to make.

"Live from the Galaxy Room, It's the Galactica 1980 Hour, with guest stars John Davidson, Suzanne Somers and Charlie Callas."

Listening now.

A couple of other things always struck me as odd with this which I'd forgotten about in my comment.

The main issue is why they send warriors to educate the scientists of Earth?

Given the technical advances since the original BSG series, they must have had some scientists with the fleet (and some resources, but that's a different question) so why not use scientists to communicate with our scientists?

Secondly, where did all the resources foir the fleet to make these developments come from?

I could question this series all day!

I'm learning an awful lot that I'd forgotten about this series but I'm still not sure I'm going to watch it again ;)

Thanks for the comments guys

Thanks for your comments Mike, always like hearing what you have to say, as you articulate things in a great fashion.

I agree, would make sense to send a scientist to make contact. But I guess since this is first contact situations, Colonial warriors might be better equipted to deal with whatever situation might arise. Troy and Dillon also looked to have an adequate amount of scientific knowledge to converse to a certain degree. Possibly after contact was established, a person more specialized in science was dispatched. In the first Episode Troy and Dillon were able to read a physics equation for Dr Mortenson, and then modify it to something he understood as well.

As for question 2, I tend to agree, for the most part they were just surviving, so odd that they would be able to advance so much. I guess though, they had gone for years without threat from the Cylons, so that may have allowed them to put more resources into advancing themselves. They may have been able to stop in Star Systems and collect the resources they needed. Also Dr Zee had advanced knowledge, so might have helped the Galacticans expand their technology. But I think I am really stretching on that answer to fully believe it myself.

Oddly the only episode of this show I really have any memory of is the very... interesting Halloween episode you guys discuss. I have a feeling that may have been the first one I saw when Galactica 1980 was playing on the Space Channel here. I guess that's why I never thought much of the show.

Maybe I'll give it another go keeping in mind at times it can get a bit silly.

Great cast guys - got to listen to the whole cast straight through on my way home today.  I'll have to dig up that last episode 'Return of Starbuck'.  Thanks for this excellent contribution.

I'm so glad everyone likes it.  We cut out over 40 minutes of talking.  There was so much to talk about, but it was pressing on over two hours, and we didn't want a rebellion on our hands.  So say we all!

Jeff is a blast to work with, I had a great Saturday morning as a result.

It came out well. As I said my memory was hazy at best but listening to you brought a lot of it back to mind.

I'm left with a feeling that, despite everything, there was still some promise there that was never quite realised.

...and thanks Jeff, I sometimes think I ramble away somewhat inanely. Your comments are reassuring :)

I just watched 'The Return of Starbuck' on Netflix - it is a fun episode.  Love how the Cylons in the wreck of their ship are sitting in Bercaloungers!

Great podcast Rick & Jeff.  Several things I had forgotten about this series.  Might need to dust off my DVD's and give it another look.  Again, wonderful job and you two make a really good super-hero podcaster team-up!  :)

@Billybob and Rick and JediJeff - great job men

You know you have a good podcast when it makes you listen and then do something about it.  Checked out TROS episode and now my best Cylon character of all time is "Sy" or is it "Cy?".  Now there is a cylon with a sense of humor.  He cracked me up!  Backing up to watch the "other" episodes and whew, Adam 12, code red!  Kind of like watching the bionic man with kids.  Did you see that Glen Larson had three of his kids playing the kids roles.  That must be something for them to fondly remember.

I just finished listening to this podcast today.  It was great to listen to.  I love the original BSG and 1980 when it was first brodcasted and I am fan of the re-imaiged series too.  fave episode from 1980 was the one that introduced the humanoid cylon,  I do think they used the idea for the skin jobs in the Ron more version. :cylon

Great show guys, listened to it today and lived it. I have only seen it once and all I remember was the bikes and the fact Jeremy Brett ( my RPG CHARACTER picture ) was in it.

Great job chaps :)

Ok, so you should release 'BSG 1980 Podcast - The Directors Cut'  or the Extended Edition.  :)

The dialogue between you and Jedijeff was just great too.  I also like the episode that had the human looking cylon too, wolfman jack was a great in that episode.  but I also loved it when the motorcycles took off into the air and flew, much to the crigin of the biker gang.
