Title: "True Grit" - remake
Post by: Rico on December 12, 2010, 05:56:02 AM
Love the original film with the Duke, but this remake looks excellent.  Besides Sci-Fi, I'm a sucker for a good western.  Check out the trailer.  Opening on Christmas Day.

I have my doubts - but I will go see it.  John Wayne is the greatest.  Matt Damon in this right?  Well....at least there is no Ben Afleck...

I think that this is going to rock. From what I hear, it's more true to the book.

Then, maybe we should call it "Really True Grit."  ;)

I respectfully disagree with that. Any movie based on a book is open for remake given the proper amount of time.

Just because it's based on a book doesn't mean a thing ,movies are base on script what you see on the screen
might be the result of a number of script changes so you could say from a remake view it's based on the original script.

Anyway the whole point is a personal level on how I feel about the original film so my own thoughts and feelings.
I have nothing against remake presay as long as it not just a retreading of what been done before, new and fresh.

Have said that Can't wait to see it

and I can't wait for the remake of Citizen Kane with Will Ferrell.

In the case of this movie, they have made it clear that it is based on the book and a story more true to the book which has some big difference than the old movie.

I read the book it's great stuff, does the pop up edition count.

I do get your point film adaptations of books can  take big liberty's with story and characters and there is always room to improve them

Just got back from this.  Really a very good movie.  The cast was excellent and it's fun to see a good, no-nonsense western again.  Jeff Bridges was great as Rooster.  Anyone that enjoys a good film should see this one.

So...does Jeff Bridges hold a candle to John Wayne? Them's some pretty big boots. :)

Great question! As far as acting goes, I prefer Bridges to Wayne. I think that Bridges has a much larger range in him. I'll let you know when I watch it.

I frankly didn't compare them as I was watching.  I love John Wayne films, but this film except for the basic story seems very different.  Seemed much more real to me.  And Bridges did a great job I thought.  One thing they all did well with in this was the dialogue was excellent.  They all speak a bit off and not modern in any way and it really makes it feel like you are seeing the old west.

I really enjoyed this! Didn't see the original, so I can't compare. From what I've read, this one follows the book more closely in the language and plot. Definitely very realistic!

Again apologies for resurrecting an old topic, just got around to seeing this. Some very good performances, a tidy script, some beautiful scenery.  It all comes together and nearly makes this a great film, just at times feels a tad too polished, a bit too forced to push it to great status.  A solid 7.5 out of 10 and as I said, so nearly a great film.

I have a blurry recollection of watching the original, sat on my grandpa's lap, though Westerns were his genre, John Wayne his action hero, so it could have been a few films.

In my opinion, this is a remake that surpasses the original. And I love the original. But Jeff Bridges is just to great in this, and the Coen brothers were on their A game here.

It's a tough call for me.  I love the Duke so the original film holds a sweet spot for me, but this remake was really, really good.  Bridges was awesome!

I'd hazard to say it's a tie between Jeff Bridges and John Wayne. Granted, Hollywood movies have changed a lot in 40 years, but In their day they are both crotchety,  reprehensible, and reluctant heros.

The Coen Brother's are like Pixar, I've liked everything they've done except 'The Man Who Wasn't There' - meh.

All the edgy smarts of Tarantino's films without the violence.
