Title: Jailbreaking
Post by: alanp on October 17, 2010, 05:52:22 PM
Has anyone tried jailbreaking an iPhone running the current firmware? (4.1)

I'd like to jaibreak for the voip over 3G and teathering.

I tried the Greenposi0n program as well as Limera1n.

Limera1n just put the phone in recovery mode and I had to restore.  Greenposi0n had me go through holding the sleep and home buttons in different patterns to get the phone in some mode for it to run, but kept looping.  Telling me to try again.

I heard awhile back there was a simple web site you just went to and you could do it there.  But not sure what phones and OS it worked with.

That only worked on 4.0 devices, 4.0.2+ fixed the giant security hole that let you jailbreak it.  It was a quirk, nothing more has been done since to allow that to happen.

I have not heard of anyone able to jailbreak it yet, but I'm not in-tune because I use standard settings.  :)

That's what I read as well until last week when Greenposi0n and Limera1n supposedly could jailbreak a phone with the current software but I haven't gotten it to work and so far, no one I know has told me they got it to work.

Just give it time.  Now that it is technically legal to jailbreak your iPhone, they are even more free to pursue this.

I'm not a jailbreaker but according to Lifehacker limera1n works on 4.x devices.

When I use limera1n, I put the phone in recovery mode and get stuck on a screen that reads "in DFU mode...please wait." Then never proceeds.

In Greenpois0n, I get the instructions to put it in recover, which I do but keep it keeps looping despite my phone being in recovery.
