Title: Tree Hugger
Post by: davekill on September 18, 2010, 07:32:32 PM
Pruning my fig trees today and thought I'd take a couple of "happy snaps" to share with you all.

I was using an electric pole saw and my pickup - like an old friend, I just can't seem to part with it.

So that's what real figs look like! What kind of climate do you have to have to grow figs Dave? Are they as tasty as they look?

This is northern Ca. just above Sacramento and I'm at about 1,500 feet elevation - hot dry summers, snows once or twice in winter.
These are old trees and very low maintenace. The wood is soft because of new growth every year. I just cut back the old stuff that dies off.

Figs ripen on the tree, they are sweet and ready to eat when picked.
I guess that's why you don't see them fresh in stores - maybe just farmers markets.

Yeah those figs DO look good!

That old truck has character!  Do I spy a "blue" California license plate?  Awesome!  I am also north of Sacramento just up I-80.  Small world.

Off topic, I know, but what's the big thing about blue plates?

I really hate the stick sap white stuff that the unripened ones ooze. It's almost like latex.

I agree, wearing gloves can help if your exposed to the sap for long. That stuff makes your skin itch.

They sort of date the vehicle-
California used black plates in the '60s, then blue in the '70s and early 80's until they changed to the white plates used now. Kinda like this one...
