Title: Kindle will be at Best Buy
Post by: Rico on September 09, 2010, 08:42:42 AM
It's been announced that the Amazon Kindle book reader will soon be in Best Buy's to buy.  I think this is a great move and I'm very impressed by the new model at only $139 for the WiFi version.  Don't tell Mrs. Rico but I think this will be her birthday present in about two months.  ;)

...and I'm hoping it'll be mine too. Really impressed with this new generation and its pricing. Though I'm not sure if I's be happy with the wifi model only or if I'd want the 3G.

Been waiting for this, and glad to know there's a place you can go for a hands on. Still waiting for the others to update so I can compare but would be surprised if I didn't go with the kindle. Nothing for me until next year probably tho. Time to compare.

Wifi seems perfectly fine for a basic book reader.  I see no real need for 3G on this.

The only reason I'd thinki the 3G would be useful is for WhisperSync. It syncs your place in the book across all Kindle devices you have. Actually now that I'm typing this I can see it's not really worth the extra cost.

Wifi away!

Yeah, not to make this about the iPad, but if it's for reading, go with the less expensive wi-fi. If you want connectivity beyond that...get the iPad. :)

My goal is actually to have a fast laptop, a Kindle, and an iPad someday.  Not necessarily in that order.  ;)

And if I was a betting man...well, that's kind of what I do for a living...I would say that is the trend for the future of personal technology. I think the desktop as a home PC device days are numbered.

Most people that I know who aren't PC gamers have notebooks as their primary computers.

I still think many will still have a main, home PC for awhile too.  I know I need one - but I'm not your average computer user.  I've not seen a laptop yet (except a WAY too expensive one) that can handle good video editing, high end gaming, etc. as easily as a solid PC.  Plus I personally like to build them and tinker - something a laptop just isn't made for.  Anyway, what I do think is multiple computer devices is really a good thing.  As Scotty would say, "the right tool for the right job!"

Maybe youve covered this but I forget:  why would you want or need both a kindle AND an iPad?

The backlit screen of the iPad isn't ideal for reading an e-book. It doesn't bother me too much and my wife just got a book for the iPad she's reading, but the screen presentation on the Kindle is much more "book" like.

Oh right, I forgot, some people get headaches.  Not me, and I'm up till 1am most nights in the dark with my iPad ;)
I've found best thing about the iPad screen is that for reading books and comics, the screen looks darn good even in bright sunlight.  Movies are another story...sorry off topic

LOL. Referring to the other thread, my socialized health care program would cover it! :)

We have to have some benefits...

On topic again ;) now that Kindle's available over here, I'm starting to think it might be worth a serious look. The Kindle app on the iPhone is carefully configured NOT to give the best reading experience (IMHO) but the eReader app I've used for years doesn't have the same selection of books as Amazon can offer (e.g. eReader don't sell Trek books in the UK anymore). Thus, I may be forced down the Kindle path - I've run out of shelves so paper is now a less popular option than ever.

I'd need to try one first, though, and haven't seen one in a shop anywhere here yet.
