Title: Space Elevator
Post by: beer on August 14, 2010, 07:46:54 PM
Turns out there's another interesting science conference this weekend: The 2010 Space Elevator Conference spaceelevatorconference.org/default.aspx

Today they had some presentations appropriate for novices like me - SE 101 (../SE101.aspx) - wish I could have been there.

Ironically I spent the day staring at a black piece of lined paper that was suppose to have been an effort towards a story featuring a space elevator. Oh well.

There are some great Scifi speculations on that - most notably Arthur C. Clarke's treatment.  Worth a read if you have the bandwidth.  :)

The books by author David Williams (who I interviewed not too long ago) involve a space elevator.  Very cool concept and quite possible.

Good one!
You'll be proud to know that I came up with a great one at work.  In Florida there was a young bear cub that got it's head caught in a plastic jar.  For 10 days the local authorities tried to drug the Mama-bear and help the poor young cub.  Finally they managed to tranquilize Mom and remove the plastic jar from around the bear-cub's head.

Of course I told my coworkers that it must have been un-bearable....

Found a copy of  "The Fountains of Paradise" at the library and may also pick up Kim Stanley Robinson's "Red Mars" ...

Just finished rereading Storm of Swords and will continue with Feast closer to Dance's release.

On 2nd thought, I probably shouldn't pick up this Clarke book - I actually had a good writing day yesterday with being distracted by books :)

I haven't read the Robinson book - but love the Clarke book (as I do almost all his stuff - the stuff that he authored by himself that is!).

Enjoy!
