Title: Scammed
Post by: moyer777 on July 27, 2010, 06:14:35 PM
A few weeks ago my Office 2007 said it wasn't valid.  So-I looked for the discs.  Couldn't find them.  So I got on ebay and found Office 2007 Professional, the place had good feedback and I ordered it.  It came and when I installed it to get rid of the non genuine stuff, it still said it wasn't valid.  I called Microsoft, they told me it was a volume liscensed copy and therefor not valid.  And that I could buy it from them for $500.  I'll pass.  So I got scammed.  I have written to the folks that sold it asking for my money back or a valid license.  I suspect I won't hear from them.  UGH!

Oh, and the guy on the phone barely spoke English... that was so frustrating.  I don't mind a cool accent, but it was so hard to communicate.  I don't get it.

I need this software and have never had the problem.

Had to rant.

Any ideas?

Sorry to hear that Rick.  I do know the Student Editions can be bought at Best Buy fairly cheaply.  Or you could try:  http://www.openoffice.org/ (http://www.openoffice.org/)

There are less *coughs* legit ways of getting Office.  If I didn't get Microsoft Office at a student discount, I'd probably pirate it.  Sorry, MS, but your software is not worth $500+.

Unfortunately, idk what to tell you.  Other than never ebay software again.  If it isn't a scam, it's something just as bad.

Well I am very surprised, but the scammer just refunded me my money.  Go figure.  That is good.  At least I don't feel as bad now.

Bummer about the whole ordeal tho. Hope openoffice works out. Would give anything to get thru what's left of life without having to ever talk to another customer/account support person. Ever. Again.

(no doubt they feel the same re: me (sigh))

Hey Rick, my wife Joyce may be able to get a copy of Office 2010 for you at a discount if you want. Our day jobs are at a Post Secondary University and we get discounts all the time. I got Office 2008 for the Mac for $9.99.  Let me know brother and I'll have her check.  Al

Why don't you Try OpenOffice?  It can save files in MS Office format, and it is free.  Unless you are a really technical user of the various Office products, it should suit your needs.

Open Office is very, very good.

/seconded for OpenOffice.

Another thing that I keep hearing about (if you need more then just office) on the Windows Weekly podcast is getting a Microsoft Technet subscription. For 199 dollars you get access to Microsoft's library of software (less Enterprise stuff). Might be a bit of overkill but it's also an option.

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/subscriptions/default.aspx (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/subscriptions/default.aspx)

But definitely give OpenOffice a whirl.

Sorry to hear about the ordeal, but at least you got your money back. The Microsoft Office software pricing is all over the board, so I don't think I would ever pay MSRP for it. My company used to be a certified reseller, so I used to be able to buy not for resale copies, not sure if I can or not anymore. I use Office 2003 on my home PC, never really had a reason to upgrade since I never use the full functionality of it anyways.

I must admit, I'm also interested in where your original copy of Office came from.

If that was really legit then you shouldn't have had to go out and get another copy.

I too recommend Open Office! It is a very good free software and does about anything you need to do with Microsoft Office. It also recognizes all Microsoft formats so you can open your existing files.

I just had a scammer hack into an old Yahoo account of mine.  He even chatted with one of my buddies and pulled the following old scam:

"I'm in some kind of deep mess right now, my family and I came down here to London England for a short vacation. unfortunately, we were mugged at the hotel park where we stayed, all cash and credit cards were stolen off us but luckily for us we still have our passports with us.

We've been to the Embassy and the Police here but they're not responding to the issue effectively and our flight leaves in few hours from now but we're having problems settling the hotel bills and the hotel manager won't let us check out until we settle the bills. Well I need you to loan me and let me if can you have the money wire to me through western union(1,550GBP)...will def refund it as soon as we arrive back. I PROMISE!

Thanks"

Down here to London?  Does that make me a Scot, Mancusian, or a Yorkshireman?  ;)

Yeah, and it was somehow linked to my Verizon account.  Took forever to deactivate Yahoo - had to break link from Verizon first.
My bad though - I had a crappy old simple password on this old account I haven't used in years.

I used to use them until Gmail.  I get on my old Yahoo email once in a great while and laugh at all the scams and junk mail that get through.

That scam was used on a friend of the family, only problem was is that the friend they attempted to impersonate was known as a tough-as-nails, reliable person who packed and pre-packed before trips.  Obviously didn't buy it.

Yahoo is falling apart and these latest hacks into their email system only show how close the company is to dying completely.

I just got an email saying my WOW account was banned for advertising and farming. I guess it's safe to say that I got hacked. Will check the damage in an hour or so.

But were you advertising your farm? :) Just kidding. Scammers suck. I'd LOVE to get a hold of one personally! I'd tie them in a chair and stitch their eyelids open, and then bring in Bryan...SHIRTLESS! :) THEN...make them watch Rico dance!! :):):)

Hey!  Bryan shirtless and me dancing?  That's a privilege to witness.  ;)

P.S.  X let me know how it works out with WOW.  My friend got hacked a few weeks back, but Blizzard fixed things back up for him.

Chris whatever you do DO NOT click on any links in that email.  It is almost guaranteed to be a phishing email spoofed to look like it came from Blizzard.  That is exactly how the gold selling scumbag haackers fooled me into giving them access to my WoW account.  Your WoW account is most likely fine, as long as you don't respond to the email.  If you are genuinely concerned contact Blizzard via their telephone support and they will suggest you create a separate email account to use for their service so you always know when emails from them are genuine.

Also if you don't already have one get a free authenticator and attach it to your Battle-net account, which makes someone unauthorized getting ahold of your WoW account next to impossible.

Good call.. I was going to say the same thing.. several of my WOW friends got bamboozled like this.

Here's an example of the BS scam emails I get almost every day from scumbag gold selling account hackers trying to snag my WoW account:

World of Warcraft - Account Management‏

An investigation of your World of Warcraft account has found strong evidence that the account in question is being sold or traded.

As you may not be aware of, this conflicts with Blizzard's EULA under section 4 Paragraph B which can be found here: WoW -> Legal -> End User License Agreement and Section 8 of the Terms of Use found here: WoW -> Legal -> Terms of Use The investigation will be continued by      Blizzard administration to determine the action to be taken against your account.

If your account is found violating the EULA and Terms of Use, your account can,and will be suspended/closed/or terminated. In order to keep this from occurring, you should immediately verify that you are the account. To verify your identity please visit the following webpage: xxx

Good point guys, but I actually went to blizzard and checked to see what was going on. Someone put a bunch of characters on almost every server and I guess they were shouting about gold. I started deleting the characters and changed my password to a six digit one.

This is the mail I got

English speaking customers: Please refer to the start of this mail
Para los clientes españoles: Por favor vayan hasta el fin de este correo electrónico

Account Name: XXXXXXXX

Account Action: 3 hour suspension and password reset
Reason for Action:  In-Game Chat Policy Violation - Advertisement and Spamming

This suspension happened because one or more characters on the account were identified exchanging, or contributing to the exchange of, in-game property (items or gold) for ""real-world"" currency. This exchange process negatively impacts the World of Warcraft game environment by detracting from the value of the in-game economy.

To prevent further harm to the game and the account you use, the account has been suspended for 3 hours and the password was reset. You do not need to reply to this email, as the account will automatically become available again once the 3-hour suspension period has ended. It may take up to one hour for our system to generate and send the new password. If you have not received a password within one hour of this message's delivery, please check your Spam, Junk, or Suspect Mail folders. If you are still unable to locate the email containing your new password, please contact us using this form: http://us.blizzard.com/support/webform-us.xml (http://us.blizzard.com/support/webform-us.xml) or use the password recovery function on https://us.battle.net/account/support/login-support.xml. (https://us.battle.net/account/support/login-support.xml.)

Account compromises are usually the result of the registered player of the account sharing his or her login information or playing on a computer that has a virus.

Please remember that it is your responsibility to keep your login information confidential. Any account that is registered to your name may not be shared with anyone except for one minor, of whom you are acting as a parent or guardian. You are also responsible for every use of your login information, whether authorized or not.
