Title: Backing up data solutions?
Post by: KingIsaacLinksr on March 25, 2010, 11:19:07 PM
Ok, so basically I have 2 500 GB hardrives.  (1 internal and 1 external).  The external is the backup to the internal, but the problem is, I'm starting to reach 85% capacity.  So while getting 500GB-1TB is not a huge deal, getting two hardrives at the same time in order maintain the backup, is out of my possibilities financially.

So my main question is, is there an alternative that is easier?  Or am I just going to have to use two at the same time?

Are you backing up the entire drive? You really only need to back up data (documents, photos etc) software can be reinstalled the other stuff can be lost forever. There isn't much of a point backing up Microsoft Word.

Yeah, what Joe said.  While it's maybe easier to just backup, or clone a whole drive it really wastes a lot of space.  Just worry about the data.  I also burn some things to DVD like photos and a few other things to have a non-magnetic backup of important stuff.

Yeah, I knew that already, but I'd wager, no, more like I'm positive that a lot of HD data is consumed by Video related files.  And a lot of these have no DVD/Blue-Ray backups.  (I use iTunes a bit).

Probably should buy that case of DVDs I've been meaning to.  Rico does have a good point.  But overall, for video related stuff, that won't be enough capacity.

EDIT:

Just checked, Videos make up 167 GB of my 500 GB drive.  What is that Hardrive managing program that tells you what programs use what space?...
