A client of mine got me an HD Panasonic Camera HDC-HS300.
I went out and took some really nice footage, but can't edit it in anything. The files are mts. ??
Does anyone know of a free or inexpensive program that I could convert these files to avi or something useful without messing up the quality?
ugh.
:)
Pinnacle Studio should be able to handle it.
I've tried Pinnacle, and it has been really slow and crashes my computer. ?
I hate MTS files... worst file format... we tried for months to work on a converter for the BTS stuff for The Guild.. finally found out that Toast 10 Pro is really good at converting those files

You need a beefy computer to run it. Are you capturing the files direct from the camera or just moving the files to your hard drive and then accessing them that way?
You could try this Rick:
http://www.squidoo.com/mts-files (http://www.squidoo.com/mts-files)
Looks to be free and supposedly does convert mts files.

Rick,
Try TSMuxer:
]http://www.smlabs.net/tsmuxer_en.html] (http://www.smlabs.net/tsmuxer_en.html)
This can convert h.264 or Mpeg2 .mts files or even demux them to audio and video streams and it's free!
I use it all the time to convert .mkv to other formats.
