Title: Podcast # 257 - "Raiders..."
Post by: Rico on December 13, 2009, 11:05:19 AM
Just got the "Raiders of the Lost Ark" podcast up.  Had a great time doing this one, and even learned a few things myself I didn't know before.  One of my all-time favorite movies.  Simply perfect.  I hope everyone enjoys this podcast and thanks to those that sent in audio comments.  I really liked hearing your thoughts.  Enjoy the show!

Raiders has always been my favorite Indy movie (Crystal Skull is a close second for me, if only because of a certain happening between Indy & Marion at the end of the movie).

I'm listening now, it is quite awesome!!

EDIT: Yes, I absolutely agree with you regarding the Indy films & Star Wars not being on Blu-Ray yet.  I'd HAPPILY buy Raiders again on Blu-Ray!

Glad you are enjoying the podcast.  Really was a lot of fun to cover this modern classic film!

Thanks for the great cast Rico, and to your usual cast of characters who made contributions as well.  ((My head is hung in shame here, one of these days I will do the same and send something in - and not just be a 'lurker'))

:)

Great job on this one, Rico. I mentioned "Close Encounters o the Third Kind" in my comments, you've never done a show on that as I recall. that might be a great topic for you or  guest cast.

Awesome podcast made me want to watch the film all over again. Crystal skull was the biggest let down since realising Andre Agassi wore a wig. Badly scripted, badly directed awfull gopher scenes ( SCENES there were two of them George ( I love cuddly jar jar bunks style comedy rubbish) Lucas. Rubbish ending ( before the final scene) and Shia Le crap.
Ok rant over. That's my opinion and as usual we can't like the same thing. :)

I do heartily agree with Rico on the making of book it's amazing, awesome stories and beautifull photographs. For the price it really is worth it. :)

Meds don't sugar-coat how you feel about Crystal - tell us your true opinion..  ;)

I haven't seen the 4th movie yet - but I intend to check it out.  My favorite actress - Cate Blanchett - hasn't disappointed me yet - we will see if she keeps 'batting a thousand' ('perfect record' slang for our non-North American brethren).

*lol*
There's nothing wrong about Crystal, you should be nicer to a forum member! ;)

Having Indy in a scifi podcast is stretching it, but damn, it's a very good movie! :)
Didn't know much about anything beyond the movie itself with the exception of that Spielberg Lucas discussion that was taped.

(There is a download link in this article, it seems genuine but as it is a humor site I can't guarantee anything.)

So it was very interesting for me to hear more about the behind the scenes stuff, it certainly closed a huge gap in my knowledge!
Thanks Rico for the excellent podcast and also to the contributers of the audio comments, you rock! :)

Glad folks are enjoying this podcast.  Had a blast covering one of my favorite films.

Katrin - just for the record, "Treks in Sci-Fi" is not just a sci-fi podcast, despite the name.  The focus is mainly on Star Trek, but I also cover other sf, fantasy, adventure and various other forms of entertainment.  And there is plenty of adventure and fantasy elements in "Raiders" and the Indy films to qualify.

Indeed, Rico has covered a many different genre's beyond sci-fi including action/adventure, fantasy. We will know the show has gone completely off the reservation when he starts reviewing romantic comedy's, however... ;)

Well, I'd argue that anything that involves George Lucas in any way can qualify to be covered by a sci fi show. At the end of the day as long as it's interesting, I say cover it. About 3/4 of the way through the show, love the review! I have the 3-movie DVD set of Indy but haven't popped it in for awhile, maybe this weekend!

Yep, I agree Joe.  Oh - and since it is my podcast, I can pretty much cover what I want anyway.  Hehe!   :)

Don't worry, I'm with you! :)
(You addressed that issue at the beginning of your cast, so I thought it would be OK to mention it.)

Your podcast is about everything geeky and Indy is an excellent fit! :)

But romantic comedies aren't geeky, don't do them, ever, please! :)

I'm already thinking about worthy exceptions to this rule, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is the closest I get, and thats a romantic drama, not a comedy.

No, wait, Big! with Tom Hanks is both comedy and romance, also has fantastic elements, makes it geeky. Damn.

I actually thought Cate Blanchett was actually quite good as Irina Spalko (but one problem for me was that she did sound like Natasha Fatale from Rocky & Bullwinkle, but since this is one of those movies that doesn't have that firm a grip on reality, it fit really well).

I think if they were to bring back the Russians for Indy 5, I would think that someone like Stana Katic would do a remarkably good job (and Stana most certainly COULD pull off a decent Russian accent, just see the Season 2 premiere of Castle, Deep In Death).

Great idea on Stana Katic for another Indy film.  She actually is fluent in multiple languages and has sort of a movie star of the past look about her.  She would fit in perfect in an Indy film.  See the pic below of Stana from one of "The Librarian" TV movies.

Thanks for the trip down memory lane Rico!  I am old enough to remember seeing Raiders in the theater, I kind of miss how movies used to seemingly come out of nowhere and suprise you like that one did.  And I had completely forgotten about Tom Selleck being groomed for Indie's part...

And I would like to warn my fellow geeks.  Do not listen to the 'Raiders of the Lost Ark' soundtrack while you are driving, because when the score 'Desert Chase' comes on you you will feel a strong urge to start ramming other vehicles and run them off the road.  You have been warned... ;)

And there is a musical 'Trek Connection' to Raiders, Vartok might know this but I doubt anyone else does.  After Marion kisses Sallah before going aboard the ship he becomes overwhelmed by emotion and bursts into song.  He starts singing 'British Tar' from HMS Pinafore.

In 'Insurrection' (one of my favorites) Picard and Data had been rehearsing HMS Pinafore before Data's assignment to the 'Duck Blind' mission.  And to distract Data so he could dock with the 'wonky' Data's vessel he starts singing "British Tar' and Data joins in.  Just a little trivia... :D

Haven't commented on this one yet. The film is one of the greats in my view and I think you're spot on on the dating of it. It appears as dated now as it did when I first saw it.

The background stuff is always fascinating to learn but the thought of Tom Selleck makes me a little uneasy. I'm not really sure I'd have wanted to know how that turned out. As for Indianna Smith... I just can't imagine anyone saying 'Ah, Doctor Smith' in a fake German accent in quite the same way as half the population of this country seem to do for Doctor Jones.
