Title: Podcast # 256 - "Dagger of the Mind"
Post by: Rico on December 06, 2009, 11:22:10 AM
The new podcast is up and I cover the TOS episode, "Dagger of the Mind."  Enjoyed doing this "classic TSF" style show.  Even had time for a quick collectible review.  Enjoy!

Great podcast as always. One item you mentioned concerning Kirk not de-programmed during the show. We have learned a few times during the three seasons that this is not necessary. Remember in Elaan of Troyius when  McCoy found an antidote for her tears affecting Kirk? McCoy said it was not needed because Kirk's first love is and always will be the USS Enterprise. Paraphrasing that is.
I wonder will he continue to be a ladies man since the change of the timeline caused him to be raised differently, and the "Spockblock"  incident in the new movie.

I spooked the people at work again....  But when I heard what the people you went to work for did to you I couldn't help myself.  I blurted out, "WHAT!?!"  It really hacked me off.  I guess I took it kind of personally, when you invite someone into your life on a weekly basis like we all do here.  You become like a member of our family, so when they burned you.  It was a member of my family getting burned. >:(

Oh and the other time I spooked them?  That was when you got hired.  I did the old Arsenio Hall 'Whoop-Whoop' circular fist pump in the air. :biggrin

Good luck my friend, we wish the best for you as always.

Thanks Rico, I enjoyed the show!

About "the shifting of memory patterns" or burying memories.
I'm not an expert, but that might be a crude description of the treatment of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. (Not exactly what the inmates suffered from, but maybe close enough):
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Posttraumatic_stress_disorder (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Posttraumatic_stress_disorder)
"Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a psychotherapeutic approach that aims to change the patterns of thinking and/or behavior that are responsible for a trauma victim’s negative emotions and, in doing so, change the way they feel and act."
There are different approaches, but if a patient can't be treated the only thing remaining is to bury the memory.

I watched "Dagger of the Mind" and I like it, I think the characters are well written, even Kirk seems less in love with himself than usual.

But I hope Dr Noel gets kicked out of Starfleet better sooner than later. Kirk was totally at her mercy and she abuses this situations for the lowest motives. He obviously didn't want to have sex with her but as soon as she has control she put that suggestion into his mind. That might only be a fantasy, but it's real to him, and having sex with someone against his will is usually called rape.
That's not very professional of her and unfortunately goes well with some stereotypes about the nature of women. I bet she later lied about it and blamed Dr Adams. With crew like this you don't need enemies.

I had absolutely no memory of this one. I've always suspected there are Trek episodes I've simply never seen and this week tended to confirm that.

We now have some form of CBS channel rerunning TOS over here. I can see the DVR needs to be reconfigured to record from it.

Good podcast as always. It's nice to hear about something completely new to me.

If you want to watch the episode, I have it streaming up in the "Fun Stuff" area in the left column here on the forum.

Good plan! If it's still up there tomorrow, I think the hotel I'm in for the night has free WiFi so that will be something to help pass the time.

Thanks.

Perhaps you were staring too intently at the twirling light in the episode...

;)

That might be the case but it didn't work on me a second time :)

One thought that strikes me is how 'Dollhouse' it all is. At one point, Kirk even asks if it's time for another treatment!

I liked it but Kirk throwing off the effects of the beam so quickly didn't really add up. I guess I have to along with some off screen mind meld treatment for both him and Van Gelder. Certainly, his return to the bridge in the final scene had the look of a post-illness return - Uhura looed particularly tentative as she regarded Kirk.

Interesting episode, but I wouldn't say it was the best.

Thanks for the chance to watch it!
