Title: Khan on show #55
Post by: Rico on June 04, 2006, 10:51:17 AM
Just finished up show #55 gang.  It's mainly about Khan and the TOS episode, "Space Seed."  Really fun always to talk about KHANNNNNN!  Enjoy!   ;D

Almost nothing is better than clicking on iTunes after getting to my desk on Monday morning and downloading the show.  "Space Seed" is a terrific episode with many repercussions throughout the Trek history.

A couple of notes if I may:

You seemed a bit amused at the original script's concept of sending criminals into suspended animation space travel.  Certainly now, in this day and age, the concept seems fairly ludicrous given the time and expense involved with just a satellite repair trip let alone anything else.  However, back in the 1950s and 60s, space travel was projected as being fairly commonplace as the millennium approached with all sorts of seemingly wacky ideas.  Before Jor-El discovered the Phantom Zone in the Superman comics, criminals on Krypton were sent into orbit in suspended animation.  And several stories have been written about sending criminals to penal colonies in space (the movie Blade Runner sort of hints at that).  But you're right about such a practice not being very practical in the here and now.

Ookla the Mok is an awesome band!  I have the Super Secret disc and it gets a lot of play in the car.  The band name originated from a character on the Saturday morning cartoon series, Thundarr the Barbarian:

If you've never seen the series, it involves a barbarian, a sorceress, and Ookla here as they adventure throughout a post-apocalyptic Earth (caused by a cataclysm from a passing comet).  Check out more info at Thundarr.com (http://www.thundarr.com/).

I have to finish this cast but it is really good about the information about Khan you give, Rico.

Thanks for the comments De.  Yeah, the idea of criminals being put on an expensive ship and sent into space was a bit of a reach.  I'm glad they changed the idea to just Khan and his group grabbing a sleeper ship and escaping Earth.  Oh, and thanks for the info on Ookla.  Like I think I said on the podcast, I ordered 2 of their CD's from CD Baby online.  Should have then soon.

I am nothing if not a repository of completely useless knowledge, especially where Saturday morning cartoons are involved.  Ask me about Turbo Teen sometime.  :lol2

Hopefully one of the CDs you picked up was Smell No Evil (the "epic monkey rock opera")   :biggrin  You can never go wrong where monkeys are concerned.

"Were there monkeys? Some terrifying space monkeys maybe got loose?"

I continue to be surprised at the level of coolness in this community.  It's too bad we're not within a reasonable distance of each other.  Some sci-fi/TV/film talk over beer and wings would be nothing short of awesome.

O would it ever. I think one day, maybe somewhere down the road in the furture, we should all do our best to get together somplace, like at Ricos or something. That would be cool. And De, I don't think your information is useless at all, I enjoy hearing about old cartoons and punk bands, and stuff like that. O and I 'm downloading the podcast now.

I love everything you've said in this cast. I loved the song at the beginning. I love this episode, so I knew beforhand that it would be a great cast. O ya, does anyone else think it's not by chance that the famous "create somthing out of nothing" guy was also named Mcguiver. "Coinsidence, I think NOT" (if anyone can name what show that line is from, I'll be impressed). And I am very excited about hearing about the ENT pilot. I saw a bit of it, but I cvan't remember it too well. But the Star Trek series dvds and movie Dvds are #1 on my amazon list. Great show Rico.

I haven't a clue where that phrase originated, but I truly don't believe there is any correlation between the character of Marla McGivers and the character of MacGyver other than sounding somewhat similar.  McGivers was created by Carey Wilber and possibly Gene Coon (he co-write the teleplay based on Wilber's story).  Accordng to my research, MacGyver was created by Lee David Zlotoff, who never worked with Wilber or Coon.  Coon died in 1973 and Wilber pretty much stopped writing for television in 1975.  Sorry to burst your bubble, but I do think we can chalk this up to coincidence.  :ohwell

O it's not from Space (although space is like a rerun version of Sci-Fi), I posted what it was in the quote thread. I think you'll all be shocked.
