Found a pic of this Kelvin phaser from the movie over at the Replica Prop Forum.  Cool design.  Maybe eFx will make one - someday.

I always thought this was kind of cool, kind of steam punk. I just don't like that brass fitting on the bottom/back.  ???

Maybe that's where the batteries go - LOL!   ;)

It kinda resembles s spray painters gun or air ratchett.... maybe that was the original design and they cut it appart and moved the pieces around. That bottom piece looks like a hex-bolt.

I think you are right. I think it may be based off a found item the prop guys jazzed up a bit. Cheaper than machine one especially since it doesn't really get much, if any, screen time like the silver hero phasers Kirk and Spock use.
