Title: Anyone want Netflix free for a month?
Post by: Rico on September 15, 2009, 10:31:09 AM
If anyone wants to try Netflix free for a month, just let me know.  As a long time member, I just got an offer to extend to friends and family for one month free trials.  Just email me and let me know at:  treksf@gmail.com and I'll send you the details.  Well worth trying if you haven't used Netflix before.

I will be the happiest boy in Canada when Netflix finally comes here. Sadly right now the only netflix-like option (zip.ca) is reportedly a horrible service that constantly accuses its subscribers of stealing DVDs.

Ever think of talking to netflix or audible about a sponsorship for the show? Netflix is definitely up the TrekSF alley.

I enjoyed my free preview, it was only two weeks though.  I tried it out because I happened to get a free Xbox live "gold" membership for thirty days and wanted to check out the instant streaming movies through my Xbox/netflix connectivity.  It was pretty cool, but I had some problems streaming HD content through my wireless network, and it generally defaulted to SD unless the planets were aligned perfectly or something.  The choices for programming werent the greatest either, although there was some cool stuff available.  I found it odd that when streaming TV episodes, only certain episodes from a season were available online and others from the same season had to be ordered by mail on disc.

It also ticked me off that you had to pay more to order Blu rays.  That's bogus in my opinion, it's not like they cost any more to ship.  I suppose they do that in order to create some kind of inventory control.

Joe-
Still can't believe Netflix isn't in Canada.  That's crazy.  I know a lot has to do with movie studio rights, contracts, etc.  Good idea Joe about a sponsorship thing.  I'll see what I can do.

Joby-
Streaming HD over wireless?  Good luck with that currently.  Drop some wires down.  And, Blu-Ray discs cost more, it's as simple as that.  And frankly for a rental, an upscaled DVD is just fine by me.

You won't find a better selection of DVD rental content anywhere.  My costs average to about $1.50 per rental per month.  Can't beat that.

Yeah Joby, my 360 gets mad at me when I try to stream HD over my 802.11g wifi connection. It wants 802.11n. SD works great. HD can be problematic.

I like the idea of NetFlix but we just never watch many movies around my house. There are some regular TV shows Jamie and i watch together and then I am constantly watching Trek and Clone Wars re-runs on DVR and can barley clear them out fast enough!

Yeah, I love my netflix, but I'm almost streaming only at this point. I have two DVDs sitting here and one has been here so long that it showed up on streaming.

I'm not real happy with the streaming quality so far.  SD or even HD, it all is still compressed.  And it really shows on my big screen TV.  DVD's come to me in one day and arrive back at Netflix the day after I mail them.  Very quick service and I prefer the quality so I don't mind a day or so of waiting.

Netflix is a great service, I agree, and as a company they seem to be continuing on the forefront of the future of technology with the huge number of on demand offerings.  I feel certain that shows on demand is going to be the way everyone watches everything in the very near future.  Why would anyone allow themselves to have to adhere to an artificial schedule when there's a better way?  I can't subscribe to Netflix though.  At this point my entertainment dollar is simply maxed out and I can't afford/wife won't allow me to spend any more on non essentials.

I've really enjoyed Netflix. I've been able to watch shows I've never had access to before (like finally getting to see B5). I really feel sorry for you guys in Canada.
And Rico I don't know why, cause I've only had Netflix for about 3 months, but I got the same offer today. So I've got extra if you get more people wanting then you can offer.

Ahh, cool.  I've been on Netflix for many years and this was the first time I saw them offer one month free.  Great deal!

OK, I'm going to give it a try. :) Rico, on their web site they have a free trial offer, is this the same as what they offered you? I want to start watching Stargate, finally. How does the rental system work for box sets?

Their trial is shorter on their website.  Use this link Bryan:

No - each disc is one rental.  Usually for TV shows there are about 3-4 episodes per disc.

Besides the disc mailing to your home they have a great on-line streaming system to your PC.   You create a queue of movies and TV shows.  Those that are available instantly also show up in your "instant" queue.   I have watched all of the Jericho episodes in about 2 weeks.  No waiting for discs, start and stop while you are about the house, see the entire list of eps and move from one to the other.  I am also through 50% of the Quantum Leap episodes and have queued up Heroes next.  For TV serials I love this ability to watch commercial free and not mailing time at all.    With that speed you can really get into a series.

Seems like they have a fantastic set of current TV serials available.

You have unlimited watching using the instant queue, so watch as much as you want.

Since I have a double monitor PC I can watch an episode on one screen and still do email and other side efforts on the alternate screens when the action is slow, credits are rolling, etc.

If you have a spouse, you can split up your number of discs per month so she gets a queue and you get a queue.  In the Vartok collective my spouse gets 2 out at a time and Vartok gets 1.  We used to have the 4 disc out at a time plan but no one could watch that much!

Have an aging parent?  I set up a 2 disk at a time membership for a parent who doesn't know how to use a PC.  She gets 2 discs out a time and I create the queue with some input from here.  She always has something to watch since she doesn't get out as much any more but enjoys seeing the new movies a few months after they are out of the theatres.

Season 1 has some clunkers while everyone finds their feet then it hots up and really gets going. I'd recommend it but my taste may not be yours. I hope you enjoy it Bryan.
