I have always thought Steve Buscemi would make an AWESOME Gargamel.

What other casting do you guys think would be cool for this movie?  Sean Connery for Papa Smurf?  Nicole Kidman for Smurfette?

Neil Patrick Harris to Star in The Smurfs
Source:Deadline Hollywood
March 3, 2010

Neil Patrick Harris will star in Sony's big screen adaptation of The Smurfs, says Deadline Hollywood. He won't be voicing one of the Smurfs though as the project is a mix of live-action and animation. Harris will play the lead live-action character.

The site says that filming begins in April, when Harris will be on hiatus from CBS' "How I Met Your Mother." The Raja Gosnell-directed film is scheduled for a July 29, 2011 release.

"The Smurfs" were created in 1958 by Belgian cartoonist Pierre Culliford, known throughout the world as Peyo. "The Smurfs," originally called "Les Schtroumpfs" in French, were created for a Belgian series of comic books, first as minor characters. The villagers, known for their blue skin and small statures, spawned a line of statuettes, games, toys, theme parks and a hit TV series, which ran as part of NBC's Saturday-morning lineup from 1981-90.

Hank Azaria is Gargamel in The Smurfs
Source: Entertainment Weekly
March 18, 2010

UPDATE: Neil Patrick Harris confirmed on Twitter that Gargamel won't be animated, the character will be live action. "Hank Azaria will be PLAYING Gargamel for the Smurfs film, not just providing a voice. He'll be live action. Perfect casting, can't wait!"

Entertainment Weekly is reporting that Hank Azaria ("The Simpsons") will voice evil sorcerer Gargamel in Sony's The Smurfs.

The magazine also says that Jayma Mays ("Glee") will play the pregnant wife to Neil Patrick Harris' character. The film centers on the happy expectant couple's lives being turned upside-down upon meeting these blue creatures. The movie will take place in New York City's Central Park and is set to begin production next month.

Jonathan Winters, who voiced multiple characters on the long-running Hanna-Barbera cartoon version of "Smurfs," will play Papa Smurf. Katy Perry will portray Smurfette, Alan Cumming is taking on Gutsy Smurf and George Lopez is onboard as Grouchy Smurf.

The studio is targeting a August 3, 2011 release.

First Official Look at The Smurfs
Source: USA Today
June 15, 2010

USA Today has published this first official look at The Smurfs, which is filming in New York City. The first trailer will also debut on Thursday, so stay tuned!

The article explains how Peyo's popular characters come to the Big Apple:

During the opening scene, set in that original time, Gargamel discovers the Smurfs' magical village and scatters them into the woods. "Unfortunately, Clumsy goes the wrong way into a forbidden grotto where a few other Smurfs follow," says director Raja Gosnell (Scooby-Doo). "Because it's a blue moon, there's a magical portal that transports them to Central Park."

Returning home is more complicated as Gargamel pursues them. The trio pictured — along with Smurfette, Brainy and a new character, the brave-to-a-fault Gutsy — take refuge with a husband and wife (Neil Patrick Harris and Glee's Jayma Mays).

Eating the Smurfs was always Gargamel's unfulfilled goal, but that's one idea the filmmakers decided to scrap. "We all wondered whether we would be making a family version of Sweeney Todd," jokes producer Jordan Kerner (Charlotte's Web). Now, Gargamel simply wants to capture the Smurfs to serve as charms, whose mystical essence will make his inept magic more powerful — and dangerous.

The Smurfs hits theaters on August 3, 2011.

I'm really disappointed, I still think Steve Buscemi would have made a PERFECT Gargamel.

I look at Gargamel, and I think 'Phil Silvers'...but you are right Buscemi would be perfect for the voice..hmmm...since the Smurfs are in Manhattan - maybe the Jersey smurfs can be led by Soprano Smurf?  Junior Smurf?  Paulie Walnuts Smurf? Or how about Big 'Smurfy' Smurf?  ;)

But that would be another movie:  'Da' Smoifs'

Well...guess you'd kind of HAVE to be gutsy to wear a kilt..while sporting blue legs. And you're only about 6 inches tall...and you're entire race only has ONE female! :)

An adjective escapes me to express my complete lack of interest in this. And I was just young enough to watch the cartoon.
