Title: "Smallville" - season nine
Post by: Rico on August 24, 2009, 07:10:38 AM
Well, season nine of the amazing long run of "Smallville" starts at the end of September on the CW.  I've really enjoyed this alternate take on the Superman legend over the many years it's been on.  They keep sort of reinventing themselves.  Last season was good even with the loss of a few main characters.  This season looks pretty cool so far too.  Sneak peak trailer below:

I like this look!

I'm really ready for the new TV season to kick in. I'm almost through 10 seasons of Stargate SG-1 this summer!

Look at you!   All growed up.  If they are changing so much, why not make the series about an alternate reality?

By the very definition of the premise and the events involved, it is an alternate reality. All the TV shows are alternate realities and are not beholden to the continuity of the comics.

The series has always just been a slightly different take on Clark Kent growing up in "Smallville."  And I've been enjoying it a lot.

Cool!  I think you'll enjoy it.  I have most of the previous seasons on DVD, if you want to borrow them and "catch up" sometime.

Well, I have to say, I didn't dig the first episode too much.  It was all so cryptic.  I think it was just that the style was off from what it usually is with Smallville.  It had a more
comic book feel to it.  I mean, I understand that, but it felt like they were playing an episode of lost.  Now we have to watch how this season unfolds until Clark destroys the world.   ?
I kind of agree Rick - it's gotten a bit too dark for me and way too much is unexplained.  Read on...
So we wait all summer for info on what happened to Lois and she just pops back from the future - no memory of it?  Did sort of the same thing on "Fringe" and it's kind of annoying.  And where did Zod and his whole platoon come from??  Who's the girl after Lois?  Lots of questions.
The tone is quite a bit different.  I did like the Brian Austin Green character (Metallo??).  I'll keep watching, but the show doesn't seem as fun currently.

I just started watching season 1 of this epic show.  I have a long way to go before I get current.  Looking forward to it though.  I've been really enjoying my Ipod touch, transferring TV shows and movies to it and watching them on the go, the train ride to work, my lunch hour, etc.

I'm halfway through season one now.  I am struck by how similar this show is to Buffy in feel and content.  Baddie of the week, goofy crew of friends to the main character each with their own little stories to tell and focus on in various episodes.  I love the episodes that focus on Clark discovering and coming to terms with his powers.  I am also really enjoying the relationship between Lex and Clark, and even though I already know from the comics there's a tragic outcome to his tale, I find myself rooting and hoping for Lex to redeem himself.  Great series!

I'm a few episodes into season 2 now and I'm totally addicted.  Carrying around the ipod everywhere getting in a few minutes here and a few minutes there whenever I can.  Love love love it!  I just can't wait to get to the later seasons when I hear there's more DC heroes and villians like Green Arrow, Aquaman, Braniac, Bizarro, Metallo...

The series for me was really strongest about midway in it's run, so you have a lot of good stuff coming.  Just always keep in mind this is a different type of telling of Clark's life growing up and his early years as a hero.

Yeah I've always been a Marvel guy over DC so continuity issues and canon vs. non canon is pretty meaningless to me.  I am enjoying this show at face value with very few expectations.

Season nine has been pretty good so far.  Not sure about the whole Kandorian sub-plot.  This coming week's episode looks good.  Oh, and Hawkman will be showing up in a special February 2 hr. episode with Michael Shanks (Daniel from SG-1), playing the superhero.  Pic below and story here:  http://tvguidemagazine.com/kecks-exclusives/hawkman-swoops-into-smallville-3209.html (http://tvguidemagazine.com/kecks-exclusives/hawkman-swoops-into-smallville-3209.html)

Yeah, it was fun and I like Ollie.  The whole Zod storyline though seems just weird to me.  He seems like a wimp.  Next week's 2 hr. special event should be very cool featuring the JSA.

That was a pretty cool two hours.  They played a bit fast and loose with DC comics history, but "Smallville" always does that.  Neat to see certain things.  But Michael Shanks kind of hammed it up a bit too much - especially with his voice.  Still, was fun to watch.

I listened to Geoff Johns, current DC writer and the writer of the movie, on another podcast and I think that he had some great things to say and it made a lot of sense. As for it playing fast and loose with DC history, there are only about a billion and six different versions of DC History and Smallvile is it's own beast.

I think that it delivered on all of the promises that Geoff said it would and there were a ton of easter eggs in it from set pieces to throw away lines. The idea of the JSA retiring was one of the major turning points in comics and was how the silver age started. I like how they made a nod to that.

This was a great show and I love the direction that some of the characters are going in.

I just got done watching.  EXCELLENT!  I really enjoyed it.  Loved to see John go transparent, the helmet rocked, and the only complaint I had was Hawkman's voice.  Great show.

Just watched last Friday's "Smallville" about the boy turned into a superhero by a cursed comic book.  Really great episode.  Some fun stuff at the Metropolis Comic Con near the start and Lois in a Xena/Wonder Woman outfit.  Also, loved the ending with Oliver showing Chloe how to shoot his bow.  Great stuff!  Grabbed some stills from the episode too.

I'm about to watch the season 7 finale then dive into season 8.  It's been so hard not to jump ahead and watch the current episodes with all they hype surrounding this series lately.  But I am confident I will be glad I stayed with series continuity once I get into the current season.  I love this show!

It's really been a fun series.  I know some don't like how they have altered the Superman mythos, but I'm ok with it.  I look at it as just "another version" of the legend.  I also love the cast.  Great series.

Hmmm I think the UK broadcast episodes are a couple of seasons behind. :(

It's one of the only US import  sci-fi / fantasy shows left that still lags a bit for some reason.

Sounds like you are kind of getting the "syndicated" version of the show.  Typically once a show has been on for a few years that can happen and it usually lags behind a couple of seasons.  They do that here too.

Technically on the series he's been out of high school for 5 years now, so that would make him about 23 or so.  What he really needs to do is FLY!
