Synopsis

Trouble-prone teen Percy Jackson is about to be kicked out school - but that's the least of his problems. The gods of Mount Olympus and assorted monsters seem to have walked out of the pages of Percy's Greek mythology texts and into his life - and they're not happy. Zeus' lightning bolt has been stolen, and Percy is the prime suspect. Now, Percy and his friends must embark on a cross-country adventure to catch the true thief, save Percy's family, and unravel a mystery more powerful than the gods themselves.

Here is more info about the books

Percy Jackson & The Olympians is a series of adventure and fantasy books by Rick Riordan. Set in the contemporary United States, the series is based prominently on Greek mythology. The series consists of five books, as well as spin-off titles called the The Demigod Files and Demigods and Monsters.

The protagonist is a 12 year-old boy named Percy Jackson who discovers that he is the son of Poseidon, god of the sea. He learns that the legendary beings of Greek mythology still exist, including Cyclopes, Empousai, Titans, and of course the Olympians (Greek gods) themselves who are in Olympus on the mythical 600th floor of the Empire State Building. Monsters frequently attack him because he is a child of one of the "Big Three" (the sons of Kronos: Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades). Percy meets many other young demigods, both friendly and hostile, who are also in the process of discovering their heritage and powers.

The series stayed on the New York Times Best Seller list for children's books for 100 weeks as of June 13, 2009.

There are five books in this series.

The Lightning Thief
The Sea of Monsters
The Titan's Curse
The Battle of the Labyrinth
The Last Olympian

How does Steve Coogan pull all these roles?

For a man I still think of as a niche television comedian, I'm constantly surprised at the things he pops up in. He's obviously doing very, very well for himself. Good luck to him!

I've "read'/listened to the first four audiobooks and really enjoyed them. Not as cool as Harry Potter but still a fun read. Got through the first 3rd of book 5 and there was an gap in the recording (a flaw in the Cd's) need to read that section in an actual book before finishing the audiobook.. just haven't had time.

"Percy Jackson" Sequel Moving Forward

By Garth Franklin Wednesday March 2nd 2011 08:10AM
"Percy Jackson" Sequel Moving Forward

Despite the first one not proving much of a hit with critics or at the box-office, Fox 2000 has begun development on a sequel to last year's "Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief" reports The Los Angeles Times.

Based on Rick Riordan's five-book young adult novel series, Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski ("Ed Wood," "Agent Cody Banks") have been hired to adapt the second novel in that series "The Sea of Monsters".

The first first film introduced the world to an ordinary boy who learns he is the son of the Greek god Poseidon and many elements from ancient Greek mythology still exist today. This second adventure has him and his friends following in the footsteps of Jason and the Argonauts as they head out in search of the mythical Golden Fleece.

Chris Columbus, who direct the first installment, will only return as producer this time. No director has yet been set.

Budgeted at a considerable $95 million, the the first film underwhelmed domestically with $88 million but made up the difference overseas with $138 million. It also was one of the more decent DVD performers in the U.S. with $35 million in sales in 2010. Reviews were decidedly mixed, calling it a not particularly good "Harry Potter" clone, but few outright slammed it either.

Fox is moving fast on this as they want to keep the fanbase interested and avoid disasters like the recent underwhelming domestic box-office performance of "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader", though internationally that film did huge business - enough to potentially green light another entry.

I liked the first one as well, but this is in your face proof that movies don't have to be successful any more to warrant a sequel.

I enjoyed the first movie.. but it was soooo different from the books. But as with Harry Potter I know it's an adaptation and won't be the same.. so I enjoy each for what it is.

I don't think it's a debate at all. In the finical sense of things, it made money. It doesn't matter what side of the pond the money came from, they turned a profit and want a sequel. So, by turning a profit, that means it was successful.

Theatrical Performance
Total US Gross   $88,768,303
International Gross   $137,698,827
Worldwide Gross   $226,467,130
Home Market Performance
US DVD Sales:   $33,633,457
Production Budget   $95,000,000

Double your money plus some is pretty good.

That was such a mediocre film, I'm surprised anyone liked it that much.  It had potential, but fizzled and I was bored the entire film.  Maybe I don't like greek mythology, idk.

I'm really glad that there is clear evidence on how bad your taste can be at times. This is one of those cases. =P The first question you need to ask yourself is why go see a film with a subject that you don't like?

Ignoring Greek myth, what fantasy movies have you enjoyed?

I actually didn't see it in theaters but on DVD at a friend's house.  It just felt like all the actors were phoning it in, especially the big name ones.  There was just simply no intensity to the movie that there should have been.  Or maybe it has something to do with seeing How To Train Your Dragon right before it which was an awesome movie.  I'm not entirely sure but there was just nothing special about it.  Although it was better than Clash of The Titans.

And what fantasy movies have I enjoyed?  Well, lets look at the list shall we:

LOTR
HTTYD
Avatar
Harry Potter
Pirates 1-3
Prince of Persia
Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole
9
Chronicles of Narnia

I think I've made my point.

Not really. You've listed a bunch of pretty recent fantasy and nothing that isn't pretty damned safe. In fact, you kind of just proved my point. No Legend, Labyrinth, Princess Bride, Willow. Avatar is pretty much sci-fi not fantasy. 9 is sci-fi, Pirates is more swashbucking action than fantasy. You listed Narnia and LOTR, but weren't specific on them. Did you like them all equally

So, the list doesn't help much. I like HTTYD, but I wasn't blown away by it, it was great for keeping my kid entertained and I liked it too, but it wasn't some masterpiece of modern cinema.

In the end this is probably the safest list of likes that I've seen in some time. Pick a movie that a vocal group of people liked recently and it's on the list.

POP is the only one that isn't that safe.

I actually just saw Princess Bride and liked it, forgot to include it on the list.

However, your being unfair in pointing out movies that came out before my time.  Regardless of their availability on Netflix, I haven't had a chance to see them.  And without Netflix, I sure as heck would never be able to see them.  (Exempting Tuck Everlasting, but I have never heard of that movie)  And no, the go-buy-them-at-the-store argument doesn't work since the stores around here have such a limited collection and typically only stock the latest.  All our movie rental businesses have died off too.  So how does that prove your point, those are all before my time, so does that mean there is no good Fantasy movies now?

So who cares if my list is safe, this is what I've seen.  Just because I'm not more than 40 years old and never got to see those classics, doesn't invalidate my point any X.  There is a list miles long of movies and shows I haven't seen.  I got to see what I could.

All the movies I listed were ones I've seen last decade exempting Princess Bride that I saw just last month from Netflix but somehow forgot about it when compiling this list.  This isn't all of them either, its just the ones that readily come to mind.  I've seen more.

And I checked IMDB and all those movies I listed are listed as Fantasy Genre.
