Title: Netbooks
Post by: psikeyhackr on June 16, 2009, 12:50:45 AM
I searched the site for netbooks and got no hits.

Netbooks are not really impressive technologically they are all about small size, light weight and low price.  But one of the things about sci-fi and the future is seeing the possibilities of how technology changes society.  So netbooks being cheap and portable will almost certainly mean a lot more kids getting their hands on computers.

Some people are saying they are not powerful enough but I say that is BS.

Of course I am waiting for a 12" with an ION chip.

I LOVE mine.  Used it yesterday half the day, got all my podcast notes done, studied and listened to some music and watched a few youtube videos.  AMAZING!

I see.  I searched on netbooks (plural) not netbook (singular) so I missed it on the search.  Thanx!

So that was June 4th, not too far ahead of me.  I was at a show for vendors a few weeks ago where I ran my benchmark of a couple.  I was really surprised that they were only 10% slower then the tower computer I normally use.  I'm just waiting for a decent selection of 12" ION machines to pick from then I will get one.

They aren't for me (I need enough horsepower to run some local server processes) becuase I'd likely be doing development on any machine I have. However, for someone who travels a lot and is doing any more normal business activity (spreadsheets, reports, email etc) I think they are awesome.

Apparently Windows 7 will be tuned to run properly on netbooks as well so they won't be stuck on XP for the next 10 years.

Vista can run on them too, if they have the right hardware inside.  It's a great little item for taking around with you when you don't need the mega-power of a desktop and just want to check email, surf the web a bit, maybe write a doc, etc.

I myself am looking at the possibility of getting one.  Preferably with 6+ hours of battery and a 10in+ screen.  However, I haven't decided on one yet.  Is Acer ok?  Or is it a better idea to go with HP?  I've seen that ASUS brand is good too.

*Edit* I'm not looking for a spendy one, just one that is reliable and has the battery power to get through classes easily.

Seems like this one is pretty well rated by CNET and good price too for all the features.  http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002DYIXNC/ref=noref?ie=UTF8&s=pc (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002DYIXNC/ref=noref?ie=UTF8&s=pc)

I have been 'jonesing' for the HP 5101.  I want to use it as my tag-along PC for a planned upcoming bicycle tour (from San Fran to San Diego).

HP Mini 311 First Test Results: Is Ion Worth It?
QuoteCompared to ultraporable notebooks with Intel's integrate graphics, the Mini 311's 3DMark06 score trounces the Intel GMA 4500 graphics inside the MSI X340 ($699.99) (643) and ASUS UL30 ($767.84) (760). The Mini 311 is 501 points better than the overall ultraportable average. In fact, this system has an almost identical 3DMark06 score to the latest MacBook Air ($1,995.84).

I'll probably be getting one of these.
