SAN FRANCISCO -
Apple Inc. is dropping the retail price of the least expensive iPhone to $99 from $199 and introducing new models.
Apple executives said Monday at an annual conference for software developers that the newer iPhones will include some sought-after features such as a video camera, a compass and an auto-focus function on photos. A 16-gigabyte version will cost $199 and a 32-gigabyte model will be $299. They go on sale June 19.
Apple also cut prices on MacBook Pro laptops.
Despite anticipation that he might make a cameo, Apple CEO Steve Jobs did not take the stage at the event.

New GPS via TomTom as well.
Yeah, new iPhone is nice, but not nice enough for me to replace my 3G.
Anyone know when the new iphone will hit British stores?
TomTom? When? Where?
Depending on price that could be really good for me.
Think I will bite the bullet and buy the 32GB iPhone in July. Then I will be able to watch Rico's vidcasts in style while doing the commute.
The compass feature looks really cool.
Rico, you have to have a mobile format site! ;)
Looks like I did the right thing holding out for an iphone. Very tempted to get one in september when my current contract runs out.
I'm not really tempted by the new hardware. A battery life and speed improvement would be 'nice' but I'm not rating it any more important than that.
I still want the 3.0 software though (8 days!). With that, the iPhone pretty much becomes what I'd always wanted it to be. It's even a good phone...you know, for talking to people on!
Get one Dan!

The price drop is nice. If 3.0 does everything I've been hearing, its going to be a big hit - for those of us who can afford one. I would like to see a $100 price drop. $299 for a phone - omg !
My first iPod was 300 dollars. If you try and justify it as simply a phone, then no, it's not worth it. After owning one since March I can say what you're really getting is an ultra portable computer.
My issue with these phones has always been the monthly fees. Too much for me to pay each month.

Exactly, which is why Apple is slow to develop an ultra portable yet. They feel that the phone functionality and more importantly, the huge amount of apps being created for it, make it a portable computer of sorts. Watch as over the next few years as Apple makes huge inroads into the business sector and RIM makes inroads into consumer. Both will continue to dominate the smartphone space along with Palm as a somewhat distance third. Nokia will become the basic hqandset supplier to the developing world.
There's been a persistent rumor about some type of tablet computer coming from Apple. But perhaps they feel that might cut into their iPhone market.

Exactly. I do think they are developing one for sure, but I don't think we will see that until next year, unlikely this holiday season. Smartphones and Ultra's will be big later this year assuming consumer confidence is good.

Yes I may now as there may be some good 'deals' with the older model.

See, wadda I tell 'ya! :)
Keep in mind these "low" prices are all for people without current contracts with AT&T for their phone service. Anyone who already has an older model Iphone, or like me a crappy cheap phone with AT&T, will be paying at the lowest end $499 for the new Iphone 3gs (8gb), or a mind bogglingly expensive $699 for the 32gb model. All prices include another two year mandatory contract agreement. Um, no thanks, I'll stick with my Ipod touch.
Not sure what UK prices are for 'upgrades' but I'm told existing iPhone users will need to buy out their current contract if they want a new model. None of the cheap upgrades we got last time. Just as well I'm happy with the 3G - there's no real option to change.
I'm waiting until they come inside a box of Cracker Jacks!

With the arrival of the 3GS, it looks like carphone warehouse are giving the 16GB 3G away free with any contract now. I had to pay a lot more than that for mine.
MAN I paid two humdred for my wife's 8g 3g with a 2 yr contract just this past christmas. Free's a better deal.

What? - A new Apple PDA? Woohooo! it's about time...
"Munster predicts that the Mac OS X-based Apple tablet will feature a 7in - 10in touchscreen that's optimised for multi-touch, describing the device as a "sort of hybrid between the iPhone and the Mac".
Long ago in the '90s even before the Palm Pilot was the Newton.
Even in it's mono color day - it was awesome, until Steve Jobs killed it :(
This may prove it was just ahead of it's time :)
Ahhh - the Newton!
