Title: New TV
Post by: KingIsaacLinksr on March 08, 2009, 12:24:25 PM
Hi all,

Well, I'm thinking (emphasis on thinking  ;D) about getting a new TV.  However, I don't need the most expensive or biggest.  Somewhere between 20-30 inches would be nice.  So my main question is, what company in your opinion gives its biggest bang for the buck?  Although I have a few companies that I prefer (Panasonic, Sony) I was wondering what the general opinion is.  My maximum spending would be about $500.  Although I'd prefer not to go that high.

Anyway, any thoughts/ideas would be nice!

You talking LCD? Then those companies are good. Samsung make good screens too. For the size you want you can get a very good TV as what usually swings it from on screen to another isn't usually noticed above 40" as long as you go for a good brand.

Again don't be fooled about 1080p rez either. It isn't noticable from 1080i above 40" Most screens are 1080p compatible now even if not natively 1080p so at that size don't spend more for a native one.

Probably more value for money to go for 32". It is a standard size and more are produced so there will be some good deals on them. You will probably find 30" and 28" are not much cheaper than 32" for this reason.

Right now if you have a Circuit City store nearby they are in liquidation. I just saw a sign yesterday that all their TVs are 50% off. I personally would try and stay with a name brand like Sony, Samsung, Panasonic, Sharp etc. You should be able to get a decent TV for just uder or at $500.00 mark. I would also recommend an LCD but be sure that you check refresh rates. Some of the older models have a tendency to show image blur on fast motion scenes and it can be annoying.

I sometimes read consumerist.com, and they strongly advise to stay away from liquidations. Liquidation companies tend to put new price sings on the product much higher (double and more) than the original price from Circuit City, so 50% off might actually be a very bad deal.
Also there was the story of a customer who bought a shattered tv (he was not allowed to check the item in the store) and was not able to get a refund or a new one. Laws for liquidation sadly allow this. No warranties on anything, too.

Now, where can I buy one of these groceries shrink rays they always mention? ;)
