Title: Podcast # 217 - Buckaroo Banzai
Post by: Rico on March 08, 2009, 07:27:14 AM
A very special podcast this week, a guest cast by Darmok (or Phil) covering "Buckaroo Banzai."  This is one seriously cool film and you owe to yourself to see it if you never have (up in the theater now).  Phil does a great job and  I thank him greatly for doing such a great job.  Kudos to you Phil - this movie really takes me back.   :metallica:

Just got finished listening... Outstanding Job!!!

Thanks for sharing your podcast-space Rico, Thanks Phil for covering one of my favorite films, and thanks Vartok for your research into the music of the film.

By the way, even though an official soundtrack wasn't released, I found the unofficial soundtrack on rapidshare  (Hit the link to get to the file, then follow the instructions at the site)

All I can say is thanks and WHEW!

As my first time producing material at such a length, it's gratifying to know that it's well-received. Due to the esoteric nature of the film and the relative obscurity of the composer, an interesting dimension was added to the production (no pun intended...I'm too brain dead for that today). It's great that Vartok was able to contribute. The goal was to have as well-rounded a listening experience as possible. I tried to keep the show as brief as I could, even cutting out some things so as not to go over an hour. Now I know what it takes to produce a podcast such as this and really have to give props to Rico. It's not as easy as it appears to be.

Thanks wraith, for the links. I'm listening to the first download now (it is so 80's). Looks like I'll have to wait to be able to download the second link.

Thanks everyone for the encouragement.

Great Job Darmok, you did a great job mixing in all the clips, and you have a great voice for Podcasting. Fun Podcast, and I agree the overthruster does look a lot like the Flux Capicitor.

Thanks for the links to the soundtrack Wraith.  I had forgotten how cool this music is.  I know you will be getting a lot more congrats this coming week Phil.  Great job at taking a very unique film and covering it so well.

Great show Darmok! You have a great voice, the content was very very well researched, I really enjoyed it! I hope to hear more guess shows from you in the future.

I don't think it was mentioned (if it was I apologize) but for a bit of relevant Trek trivia:

"No matter where you go, there you are" is the quote on the USS Excelsior's registration plaque.

Man, I wish I'd known that! Maybe I'll have to do an addendum with the constellation of information that's available on the movie. :-)

There are some things that I left out which I wish I'd included. One of those is the fact that the movie is so language-oriented. Not only the jokes, but the choice of words, the dialogue. Jeff Goldblum had some moments when he had some interesting lines — especially at the start of the film. Also, there's lots of chatter in the periphery throughout the movie. One of my favorites takes place at Yoyodyne when the voice over the loudspeaker says something like, "Monkey boys are in the building".

One of the lessons learned in doing this first podcast project was how important preparation of material is.

Thank you, kind Sir. It would be interesting to hear the impressions of a first-time viewer (especially nearly twenty-five years after the film's release). What is ironic about me even doing a guestcast is that I'd been away from the forums for a while and Rick Moyer invited me back. I'd been listening to the episodes here and there but was so caught up in learning Facebook and spending time at MacJams that I lost touch with the TISF community. Once I came back, I got the bug to contribute. Rico or someone made mention of "Buckaroo Banzai" and I got a bee in my bonnet about it.

I have an accent? I've usually been identified as having a distinct lack of an accent. Based on this alleged accent, where would you say I'm from?

I'd say you come from the East coast, probably New York area. I'm English so of course I'm bound to be way of ha ha. I've just bought Buckaroo Banzai on DVD for £2.99 which is about $1.60 brand new. How cool is that.

You are pretty close to the mark. Actually, I live in New Jersey. Interesting. I don't think I say "kwahfee" for "coffee" or "ahrinj" for "orange". Is it words like "gonna" and "havta" (have to)? Or is it rhythms? I spent my childhood in Los Angeles and my teenage years in the Midwest (Ohio and Michigan). My college years were spent in Montreal. When I came back from Montreal, someone said I had a Canadian accent. I thought I was pretty impervious to regionalisms. Perhaps not. :)

Very cool that you found the DVD at that price. You're going to really enjoy the movie. Be sure to share your impressions, eh?

Looking forward to the podcast, Darmok! I love Buckaroo, it came out of nowhere and I was like, "Whoa! What was that!" I'm from Greenwich, CT, so I have even less of an accent than you but to the Brits, we speak in a very short, clipped form of English. Whenever you hear Monty Python spoofing an American, it's usually an east coaster as it's so distinctly American without any affects we hear from other places in the US.

Two Thumbs up for a great show man.  I'll admit I've never heard of Buckaroo Banzai at all.  It does sound interesting and if I'm not mistaken one of my favorite actors was in it.  Could be wrong, but whatever.  Either way, great job Darmok and I'll be interested in hearing more from you in the future.

This movie is full of quotable moments-

John Whorfin: "Shut up, Big-booty, you coward. You are the weakest individual I ever know."

John Bigboote: "BigbooTAY! TAY!"

*gunshot*

The Big-booty scenes always crack me up.  I guess I'm easily entertained.  :D

I'm right there with you. I love how John Bigbooté's name gets mangled throughout the film. Another favorite moment is when John Bigbooté (who was pretty low-key throughout the film) manhandles the Secretary of Defense and replies, "It's not my (expletive) planet, understand Monkey Boy?". There's a very musical cadence to that; I wonder if it was intentional. The term "Monkey Boy" had me in stitches when I first heard it.

Lots of the lines really come out of the blue. Like, "This boy's an Eskimo". I also love the little visual surprises, like when New Jersey and Reno pass by the watermelon.

Another favorite line comes at the news conference:

"The President's calling, Buckaroo."

"President of what?"

"President of the United States."

"Oh."

"Lithium is no longer available on credit."

"Big-booty...more power to him."

"The deuce you say!"

Well, Buckaroo is not my cup of tea. It has its moments, it's very quotable, wired is good, middle of the story is fine too (star wars, lotr), but the 80s sometimes trouble me. Also humor in a foreign language is very difficult to understand. Culture references are an issue, too. I probably missed a lot.

I think this film gains a lot with a good introduction, and that's exactly what Darmok delivered. It's quite a challenge to retell the untellable story, and I wish I would have listened the podcast before watching the film.
All in all it was quite entertaining and full of interesting information, the clips worked well, the music was just right. Doesn't sound like a first podcast at all.

Thanks for listening.

Listened to a couple of Anomaly podcasts recently. I went to your website to find episodes and found only two. Eventually, I found the recent ones at Podcast Alley. The next one i want to check out is the "Galaxy Quest" episode. The RPG enactments are coming along nicely.

The Galaxy Quest episode is definitely my favorite. It's also the very first Anamoly podcast I ever listened to, so it holds a special place in my heart :wub.

I just wanted to chime in and say Great Job Darmok!! I saw Buckaroo Bonzai for the very first time around a year ago. I thought it was very silly, which was one of the reasons I loved it. It's one of those movies where a lot of the actors are deadpan and it seems like they're taking it seriously, but you know they really aren't. They're just having fun with it. I can't believe they delivered some of those lines with straight faces.  Definitely a classic.

And yes Jen, if you haven't yet, you should check it out.

Definitely enjoyed the "Galaxy Quest" episode. Listened to the "BSG" episode yesterday. Some good points were brought up. I have a friend with whom I discuss this stuff, but he's been so busy that we didn't get a chance to. At least it was nice to listen to someone else hash it out. I'll have to watch it again and find someone to discuss it with. :)

Thanks for listening to the "Banzaicast". I agree, what makes that movie is the Jack Webb/Leslie Neilsen deadpan approach. I love silly when it's done right. By nature, I'm a silly person, so it works out. It's also a delight to see so many recognizable actors in that film. When I first saw the film in the theater, I was disappointed that the Rawhide character (Clancy Brown) died off. He seemed like a cool character. That was the first time I'd seen him. Then, "Earth 2" came out and he was back. Now, he's all over the place; Lex Luthor in the "Superman" cartoons, Mr. Krabs in "Spongebob Squarepants" and then "Enterprise". Jeff Goldblum's delivery I think was the most amazing in parts ("Discusson...what discussion?").

That movie is like an onion — so many layers of things going on. I think it might just be a "guy movie", though.
