February 20, 2009 - IGN Movies has learned that Universal Pictures is planning to turn the TV series Battlestar Galactica into a feature film with series creator Glen A. Larson being lined up to script and produce it.
We were informed that the film will be based on the original BSG series from 1978-79 rather than the recent reboot from Sci Fi Channel. The story followed a band of humans who were the only survivors of a devastating attack on their colonial homeworld by the vicious cybernetic race known as the Cylons. The survivors, led by Commander Adama, embark on a journey through space aboard the military vessel Battlestar Galactica to find refuge on a distant planet called Earth.
Battlestar Galactica has been in cinemas before. Re-edited versions of television episodes were released theatrically: Battlestar Galactica (1978), Mission Galactica: The Cylon Attack (1978), and Conquest of the Earth (1980).
A Universal spokesperson refused to comment on rumored projects before ultimately denying it; we were later able to confirm our scoop independently. (This studio denial was reminiscent of Sony's dismissive response to our scoop about Jaden Smith starring in a Karate Kid remake, which we broke a YEAR before the project was officially announced.)
Although we understand that nothing is final yet on the BSG film front, fans should likely expect an official announcement on the project in the coming weeks.
That would be very cool but I am surprised it's the original BSG and not the new one as the new one has been so successful. I would love to see old school BSG but they also could do new school showing more of the Cylon War.
WOW - that is kind of surprising. Almost seems like an April Fool's joke. I'm having a hard time buying it. Like Bryan said, I could see them doing the new series, but not the old one at the current time.
I agree. Why would they ignore what has been so successful? Surely they could bank MORE if they translated the new BSG to a feature film. That doesn't make sense to me...but what do I know? :D
Are the rights to old BSG in different hands to new BSG?
If that is the case this could just be an attempt to cash in on the success of new BSG. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE old school BSG but if they are doing it just for money then it probably won't be much good.
You mean Dirk Benedict can give up his job at the hot dog stand ? :D
Its like being thrown back to repeat the 1st grade - have to wait and see what develops. I would love to see this cast on the big screen.

I'm not sure they look anything like they did! I would imagine it will be new actors, with some cameo's by some of the original. We will see. Perhaps with CGI we could even see some folks that aren't around any more. Hmmm.
I do have a soft place in my heart for the original. I just had a dream last night that I had found my Viper model in a trophy case at my folks house. Of course they don't have a trophy case.. oh well. :)
I loved the original but I doubt I could bear to watch it again now. I always used to have a mental story running as a kid where I was a VIper pilot. I came ip with all sorts of plots and stories.
Whatever happens, it will be interesting to see how this plays out.
The old ones are kind of cheesy, but cool in a way too.
So, I was watching Galactica 1980 a few nights ago and guess what shows up? The first human model Centurion. There is also an Enemy mine episode with Starbuck and a Cylon. While this was fun, I don't see myself wanting to watch BSGOS on the big screen any time soon.
This could be interesting. I wouldn't mind seeing a remake of the original story. With updated graphics and a new cast, it might be pretty good.
I am like Rick, I have a soft spot for the Original as well. An updated version of the Original might be cool, as I doubt it will be as heavy and dark as the Ron Moore version. So it is possible their might room for another Battlestar Galactica. I really liked the Cylon Raiders from the Original series, so if they updated them a bit, it would be great to see them with the new effects and technology of today.
All i'll say is kerching. Money making machine going into hyperdrive.
by your command! :cylon

Bryan Singer Boarding Battlestar?
New Galactica moving forward
Source: HitFix
Drew McWeeny over at HitFix has heard that Bryan Singer is in talks to work on a Battlestar Galactica feature film project. Yes, just months after the end of the superlative TV series we could see the start of a new Battlestar on the big screen.
Singer tried to get a new Battlestar TV series off the ground waaaay back in 2001, but after the September 11 attacks the story of a sneak strike that wipes out a large portion of humanity wasn't exactly an easy sell, and the project died. At least, until Ronald D. Moore picked up the ball in 2003 and ran with it,
Now, apparently, Universal, which owns the film rights, is trying to bring Battlestar Galactica back to the big screen and has asked Singer to come aboard as producer and possibly director. The creator of the original 1970s show, Glen A. Larson, is already working on the project.
So what do you think? Is it too soon after the ace TV show? And most importantly: Starbuck, man or woman?
I still think this is going to be a very hard sell.
It would be cool to see and I like Bryan Singer, but I'd almost rather see a new Galactica movie at this point. Maybe a flashback to a part of the story - like they did with "Razor."
Looks like this is actually happening...
Bryan Singer to direct and produce 'Battlestar Galactica' movie
by Nicole Sperling
Battlestar Galactica is getting the big-screen treatment. Universal Pictures has confirmed blog speculation that Bryan Singer, director of Valkyrie, will take on directing and producing duties for a BSG movie. Glen Larson, who created original series back in 1978, will produce as well. The film is not expected to be a continuation of current popular television show that's running on the SyFy network but will be a complete re-imagining of the sci-fi lore that was invented by Larson back in the 70s.
