I know a couple of you have iphones and one of the things that was the biggest pains about the iphone is paying 2 bucks for a ringtone when I already have an mp3. Well, there is a way to make it work.
First change your import settings to AAC if it's not already. By going to preferences and import settings.
Then take your mp3, as long as it's around 30 seconds, and right click it. Choose Create AAC version. Then navigate to your new one in windows explorer or apple's finder. Then delete it from your itunes library but keep the file.
Rename your extension from M4A to M4R. Then drag and drop your new M4R file back into itunes under the ringtones section.
If it's longer than 30 seconds, you can either whittle it down in audacity or garage band or right click it in itunes, go to get info, options, and set the start time and stop time.
I saw this demo on the internet and it worked perfectly. I have all my old ringtones from previous phones on my iphone.
And if that gets confusing, here is a link:

AlanP: thank you VERY much! ;D :thumbsup
Yep, tried that a few weeks ago (but never thought to post it here Doh!).
It's very easy and works very well.
Should be getting my iPhone in a month. I'll keep this in mind!
Slightly off-topic: I have a ton of stuff in my itunes library, some purchased from the itunes store; some ripped from my CD collection, and some audio files found elsewhere on the internet. When I sync my iPhone, itunes drops some of the files, saying that they can't be located. Anyone else experience this, and if so, is there a way to work around it?

I copy all of my files to the itunes directory and every once in a while I delete my library and keep the files then do a media search for them to make sure that itunes knows where they are. I have a lot of media on external drives and if it picked it up from one of those drives, it will lose it at some point. It's just easier to copy everything to the itunes library. I do it when I convert to AAC.
If any of that makes sense ...
Some of my video podcasts did that but I think that was a format conflict.
Just made the first 30 seconds of the theme for Med's Waffle On show my ring tone. I love it!

You can pretty much do the same thing for any phone with a microSD slot. I made 5 ringtones before I went to work today for my Samsung Blast.

Yeah but what some of the companies are doing is taking that capability away so you will have to buy them from their ringtone store. I've heard Verizon is doing this and I know none of my relitives on Alltel are able to do it.
Most companies in Canada lock that out by default. Generally the only way you can add ringtones is by buying them. The iPhone is the first one I've had where you can do it (even though it's a very mild hack).
