Robert Llewellyn has been on Twitter talking about some Red Dwarf Specials they are making which will hopefully lead to a new series! ;D
Anybody heard anything about this? He says they will be broadcast on 'Dave' in the UK around Easter time and then a DVD release later in the year...
The fact they're being broadcast on 'Dave' makes me a bit cautious, all that springs to mind about this channel is endless re-runs of Top Gear (we watch it a lot at work). 'Red Dwarf' was very hit and miss in the later series's so I hope whatever they do put together is more inspired by the great early episodes.
Well i'm doing a waffle on podcast on red dwarf and i'm excited about the new dwarf. I've been reading about this since october and i beleive it's one special episode and two documentary episodes. It was only series 7 that i thought lacked quality mainly because chris left. It's 21 years old next month.
Man!!! I loved Red Dwarf!!! I want more....I want more!!! Just as long as it is not that 'Red Dwarf Usa' junk. Grrrrrrr!
Long live Rob Grant and Doug Naylor.
I'm going to talk a little bit about Red Dwarf USA but not a lot ha ha. Got to love the boys from the Dwarf..............
I haven't the show in years. I wouldn't mind seeing a Red Dwarf movie.
That was going to happen about three years ago. I met Chris Barrie and asked him about it and he said everyone was up for it. At one point it was going to be made in Australia to save money but alas that deal didn't come about.
It is going to be interesting to see what they do with it - especially since it is back on Earth! Unfortunately Norman Lovett is not going to be in it, apparently not enough money in the budget to afford him.
Norman Lovett made the first series for me.
I watched the rest but it was never quite the same as in the very beginning.
Season 7 did go down hill and even season 8 never really picked it up for me. Lovett might have been back, but so was everyone else and that didn't work to my mind.
You know i've been going through all 8 series in preparation for this sunday recording and year series 7 is a bit off, i actually really like series 8. It's out till you go through them all you realise that the gems are series 4, 5 and 6 they were just brilliant. I see they have been filming on the set of Coronation street now that's just wrong.

I hope this doesn't mean we'll be getting a few dodgy cameos... >:(

I agree, season 8 is actually very good - some outstanding moments. Season 7 is by far the weakest of the lot.
I've only ever have seen bits and pieces of this series. Had no idea it had been around for that many seasons.
I don't think I ever seriously watched season 8. I think 7 had put me off by then...

Great to see them back together. Though i'm not too sure on Rimmers outfit.

Yes, there is something not quite right. Looks very cheap. Kryten looks good though.
Kryten has a new chest plate. I'm going to have fun recording my red dwarf episode this week. Good to have extra info. Still hoping that Coronation Street is not involved. Dr Who did that with Eastenders and boy did i cringe.
Rimmers outfit? I'm not sure about his hair!
This is airing from Friday so it's time to see what Red Dwarf and Corrie do when mixed together...Hmm, decribed like that it doesn't sound promising, does it.
Heard an interview with Chris Barrie of Five Live this evening, though, and he was being very positive stating that the big change was in production values...I think he meant it in a positive way...
The other suggestion he made was that this involves a big (for Red Dwarf) CGI budget. We can but wait and see.
From the pictures on dave website it looks darn impressive. Friday, Saturday and Sunday night of new Dwarf, I'm havint to tape Friday (going out for a stag night,) and Saturday (Dr Who). What a great weekend of geeky TV in the UK.
I need to go check the pictures. As I say, Barrie was very positive and I believe he's a genuine enough guy.
It's just the Coronation Street link that scares me.
Some new Red Dwarf pics.
I've just realised that 'Dave' isn't free to air on satellite so my Media Center system won't have it!
I may have to resort to other means of watching it... :dry

Finally I find a unique benefit to digital Freeview?
I don't believe it! You wait, I'll forget to record it now.

I'd have both if I could, my system could do it but I don't have a decent aerial...
'Dave' is under contract to Sky for the forseeable I'm afraid, so although it is technically 'free' no 'freesat' appearance for a long while. :(
Hmmm, you don't have freeview, bugger. Dan the DVD of these specials is out in June, i've pre-ordered it from play.com and its about £12.
Meds was saying that he hoped Red Dwarf didn't involve Coronation Street. Well I reckon theres some fun to be had here, this is what I think will happen.
I reckon that the crew will have to find an identical to Lister or something like that and they will have heard of this actor bloke on this show on the planet Earth and then they need to hunt him down. I can imagine that being very funny. Because as most of us Brits know, Craig Charles is now a regular in Coronation Street. HeHE
OK, my concerns were groundless...sort of.
With some spoilers...
The first section, back on the Dwarf, is brilliant. From the set, an updated version of the original bunk room, to the acting, which is in the realm of classic Dwarf as far as I'm concerned, it all worked very well for me.
I got halfway through the second episode, well into the Corrie section, before reaching the point of thinking "This is absolute rubbish, what have they done to bring this series this low" but I kept watching...and they turned the entire thing on its head and came out of it majestically.
Bravo one and all. My fears were groundless and I loved it.
I'll be interested to see how it plays to a non-UK audience with no Coronation Street knowledge, but I suspect it will work OK.
My only complaint
is that they effectively re-used an earlier plot with a twist. The whole 'virtual reality created by a squid' plot.
Admitedly, they linked it into the previous story very nicely with Cat admitting to smuggling the creature aboard years before, but I would have preferred a completely new plot point.
A minor niggle when compared against the joy of the first new Dwarf in 20 years!
Thought it was fun to see the gang again.
The episodes were entertaining if not quite on par with classic Dwarf. I agree with Mike that they lost me a little in the middle but pulled it back at the end. Oh, and yes I missed the laughter track too Meds!
Didn't like the female hologram character. I feel she was put in as a plot device to replace Holly to get the gang to jump dimensions. Who else would have suggested it, constructed the device?
That's probably the case. I was surprised I didn't miss Holly at all, at least during the viewing time. As I think Norman Lovett is brilliant in the roll, I'm glad they managed to carry it off without him.
I'm sure my spoiler is right BTW. They were daily clear about it at the end of episode three.
Yeah sorry your spoiler was right. I missed the last line from Cat. You know I've just watched all three in one go and i loved it. The middle episoder is the weakest but to be honest that is normally the way with three parters. I loved the end, great acting from Craig Charles. I always enjoy Chris Barries performance, and i didn't miind the female hologram. I've pre ordered the DVD so it will sit happily with my Red Dwarf collection.
The female hologram was originally a bit of a conundrum that wasn't well enough explained for me, but it was all paid off properly within the context of the story at the end.
Finally getting around to watching the newest three episodes. I so want the car:
