(warning - might be tiny spoilers ahead).....
IDW is doing a 4 issue comic series over the next four months that leads into the new film. Learn more below and see the first 5 pages!
COUNTDOWN PREVIEW
The four issue 'Star Trek Countdown' comics series will show the progression from the Next Generation era to the new Star Trek movie. The series is 'presented' by Star Trek director JJ Abrams with a story by Star Trek co-writers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman. The series will primarily deal with (elder) Spock and the film's villain Nero, including interactions with other characters from the TNG era. The series is written by Tim Jones and Mike Johnson with art by David Messina.
As reported, the comic series starts off after the events of Star Trek Nemesis. The Stardate given is 64333.4, around eight years after Nemesis (Stardate 56893.5). Issue one starts off with Nero and his crew, including his second Ayel, on a mining operation (looking for something called 'decalithium') when something seems to go wrong. Also of note is that Nero and his crew have hair and no tattoos (as seen in pre-release images), and although the drilling platform appears the same, Nero's ship looks different than seen in the Star Trek trailer and press previews.
AWESOME. :) This comes out this month, right?

Issue one comes out Jan. 14th
Is it bad that I'm already liking Nero as a character in just those few pages?
I thought about buying this but I really don't want to double dip for it because I will buy the trade copy. Thus I probably will not buy the individual copies even though my curiosity is aroused. I have all the IDW Star Trek trades released thus far but have not bought a single issue copy yet.

This looks really interesting!
Look very cool! Although, "No time to explain, big boy, just get your ass up here" isn't what I think I want to hear from a Romulan. :wacko
LOL I thought about that then realized that we've never heard actual not politician or military romulans really speak. If we judged our world only on the voices of our leaders, the words of the commoners would be pretty strange.
I also got a Romulan version of Mal from firefly when I read those pages.
I really like the cover! I've already added this to my pull list. I really want to read it now.

Well, it is a promotional tool for the movie and maybe the writer is not that familiar with Romulans? They also refer to Nero as 'Captain' and Romulans don't use that rank.
Looks entertaining though.

You make some good points Dangelus, but I tend to believe that the IDW editors make sure that thier writers know their subject matter before turning 'em loose. I think X hit it on the head-- It looks like Nero and his crew are "civilian" Romulans. The rank structure and behavior on a non-military ship are probably vastly different from what we've seen so far on the big screen.
I need to call my comic shop and make sure they add this to my pulls for tomorrow! :)

Most likely I suppose. It would make much more sense.
IDW seem to be rocking the house at the moment with thses kind of comics. I've just bought the set of Dr Who The forgotten comics and another set of 6 Dr Who tennant comics as well, saying that they havn't arrived yet, boo to ebay. Will have to order these Trek ones as well now.
Just a Heads-Up- I was talking to the owner of my local comic shop today; he says that despite the listed release date, the book will most likely be coming out next week, not tomorrow. Of course, that might only apply to the stores here in Louisville-- apparently, many of the shops here have been experiencing "technical difficulties" with Diamond Comic Distributors.

I was wondering about that as it's wasn't listed as coming out this week from the list I get emailed to me every week.

Where will you be ordering from Meds? I haven't bought US import comics in years and when I did I was in London which was a lot easier, plenty of shops. I'm guessing an online source?
Amazon.co.uk have the full book release thing available for pre-order. I've already got my order in :)

Brilliant! Thanks for that.
Amazon is probably the best bet as Steph says above. I have a few regular people on ebay that i but comics from so i'll keep my eye out there. I think the Amazon one in TPB is under a tenner.
Seems like the release date has changed to Jan. 21st for issue number 1 of this.
Yep. Already have it added to my pull list.
Trekmovie posted a surprising spoiler regarding the prequel comic. If you don't mind spoilers, you can check it out here- http://trekmovie.com/2009/01/19/early-review-star-trek-countdown-1-prequel-comic-to-star-trek-movie/ (http://trekmovie.com/2009/01/19/early-review-star-trek-countdown-1-prequel-comic-to-star-trek-movie/)
Wow, that is an interesting spoiler!
Very interesting....
I picked up issue one today; VERY GOOD BOOK. It's good to revisit the characters and plotlines of what I assume is the canon TNG era, and see how things have changed since we last glimpsed them. And the last panel was astonishing, to say the least! I MUST KNOW MORE!!!
I'm also pleasantly surprised at how likeable the antagonist Nero is; this book is doing a lot to flesh out his character.
...I'm feeling the onset of a severe case of Trek-fever!
I got mine at lunch and I'll read it when I get home. Cool idea for them to do this mini-series prequel to the new film.
I just read this. That last page was a shocker. I'm not quite understanding it. It felt like I was watching Lost, which seems fitting. :)
EDIT: I just read the TrekMovie.com article, and the shocker I referred to was the "SUPER SPOILER" mentioned there.
I read it and liked it too. The end page didn't seem that odd to me. Keep in mind this is set several years after Nemesis at this point in the story.
Well it was a big spoiler but i found it just lightening my already burning fire of excitement for this film.

I don't really think that last page is a spoiler really. Because I don't think much of what you see in the prequel comic will be referenced much or shown in the movie. This is just a little back story for us geeks!

I found it quite odd, since that character was dead previously.

Not completely dead - remember.
I know exactly what you're referring to, but that would be even more odd in some ways.
But, I'm not comfortable discussing any further, not wanting to spoil anything.
Only mostly dead ... I bet they found Miracle Max!
I just got my copy today. Great book! I really enjoyed it and loved the cliff hanger! HOW COOL!
I was too slow.. and it's sold out everywhere. :(
If you can't find it, I can send you mine. Just let me know.
Just read issue # 2. Great read! I like how this is really setting up events for the film. It will make it all that more enjoyable.
Just picked up issue 2, haven't read it yet though. I'm really, REALLY hoping that some of the characters appearing in the comic, or even other familiar characters (in addition to Nimoy's Spock) make a surprise appearance at the beginning of the film. It would be sweet to have a 'passing of the torch', kind of like they did with "Generations". Only this time, I guess they'd be passing the torch backwards. ;)
Mine is ordered and on it's way!
This sounds interesting. Some one in an earlier post called it a "book'...is it an omnibus or a comic book? I can't seem to read comics..I don't know why. Angela is making me read one for Anomaly (a classic X-Men comic). Maybe I should read this one instead. :D
It's a comic book. People who read comics tend to call them "books" for short sometimes. Most likely after all the issues are out it will get collected into a trade paperback.
The TBP should be out at the end of April.

Looks like April 29th. Which gives you about a week to get it and read it before the movie comes out.

I am an X-Men fanatic; the Chris Claremont run in the late 70's/early 80's is what first turned me on to comics! Which story-arc is she making you read? Dark Phoenix? Days Of Future Past?
If you are having trouble getting into comics, you should try Astonishing X-Men volume 1: Gifted. Not only is the art amazing, but the writer is someone you are already familiar with-
Joss Whedon. ;D
I just downloaded the first three prequels on my ipod touch! WOW! Great stuff. It's well written and illustrated.
Must be some small print. Do they display it one panel at a time?

Where did you get it, Rick?
yes, they do one panel at a time in brilliant shiny color! It really looks nice on my ipod touch, remember it has a fairly big screen. I got on my ipod, selected apps and searched for Star Trek Prequel. And there it was! Nice!
I downloaded each book for 99 cents. That's a deal!
I second that! Caught you talking about it on Twitter and I had to check it out.
They look great on the Touch and the panel system works VERY well. This has saved me a lot of money and I don't have to wait for the trade paperback.
On the UK store they are 59p each so the whole collection will only cost me a shade over £2 which is fantastic.
Search for 'iverse' on the app store as they have quite a few different comics on there.
I just checked out the free preview of the first Farscape comic to see what it looked like.
Now I'm off to get the Trek ones.
For anyone who cares the trade omnibus is being released ahead of the last issue. My copy was shipped from Amazon yesterday. I can't wait!
Kevin
I downloaded these a while ago and am only now reading them
I'm halfway through the second and...WOW. I'm loving this!
yes, it's very good stuff! I am very impressed.
I've just ordered the TPB and soooo looking forward to receiving it.

It's good stuff. I hope that some of the TNG stuff will make it into the film, at least in reference.
That would be good but somehow I doubt it.

I don't know, man. ;)
The Romulan stuff is essential to the plot of the film. It would almost be more difficult to leave the TNG characters and their role in events out of the story than to include them. I'm not talking about having the actual characters in the story, mind you (but that would be AWESOME). I'm referring to there being some mention of them. It would kick butt if the part of the film taking place in the TNG era had some reference to the existence of Picard, Data, or the Enterprise E. Perhaps they could have Nero or Spock mention Captain Data or Picard by name.
Now i'm a bit lost and i'm sure someone can enlighten me here. Captain data? how did that happen?
It's pretty much what you'd imagine.
As was hinted at the end of Nemesis, Data's attempt to transfer his personality & memories into B-4 eventually panned out. After Picard moves on to become an ambassador, the reborn Data gets promoted to Captain of the Enterprise E. Data, the Enterprise, and other TNG era characters play a role in the events that lead to Nero's attempt to go back in time and alter the timeline.
Ah, i was on the rigt track. Cheers.
I downloaded the 4th countdown book last night on my ipod. WOW! It is brilliant and now I am ready to see the movie! AWESOME!!
I ordered the Trade paperback online 2 weeks ago. I am hoping it makes it here before the movie!
I got my copy of Countdown omnibus from Amazon today (and also my 4.1 Voyage to The Bottom of the Sea Box set!). I'm looking forward to reading it and cating up with everyone.
Kevin
The fourth one's on iTunes? I'm off to find it!
If anyone in the UK is looking for the paper back version, I got my copy in Waterstones last weekend for £6.99.
Ha! Mess has has his on order for weeks! I hope he gets it soon.
i've just re-ordred a different version and its on its way. Play.com just cancelled the one i originally ordered. Thanks any way Robbo
Meds - you can't find it on Amazon??
No probs Meds. Now I've read it , I must go & see the movie again!
I just got my copy tonight. I'm looking forward to reading it. Then I'll have to see the movie again. :)
When i looked on our Amazon it only had second copies (which doesn't bother me) but they were going for a silly price. Got one on it's way now. I think it's just a different cover. :-)
I just bought it at Barnes and Noble and read it. Very good! Anyone notice that the Romulan base is the Nostromo from ALIEN?
I read it today and it's pretty good. Definitely fills in the blanks. Too bad they couldn't have included it in the movie. Then the movie would have really long. It wouldn't have matter anyway. I still would have watched it.
This was one of the reasons I was talking about this on the podcast and suggesting it for months. The back story in the comic really helps flesh out the movie. Nero is much more interesting this way especially.
