Title: Dragon Con 2009
Post by: Jen on January 02, 2009, 11:21:54 AM
Angela has decided that we are going to Dragon Con this year. She has a friend who will be manning a booth there and several of her other friends, who are going, have insisted that we come with them. Apparently it isn't until September. That's a long way off and the only convention I've been to was a small town Trek Con and that was quite an experience for me. If we go to this, it will be a true baptism by fire. Angela's insisting that we dress up in addition to attending this event. I guess Renfest wasn't good enough. :D  I'm considering a traditional Vulcan getup, robes and all. I guess I have PLENTY of time to ponder, design and construct...If I end up going. Angela is planning to create a costume that her character wears in WOW.

I guess going to Dragon Con will be a good way to promote our show, Anomaly. One of our listeners once told me they learned about  our show at a panel there last year. Now to convince my husband that it's safe for us "Anomalies" to go and that he should come with us.... Maybe I'll talk him into dressing as a Starfleet Officer and we can go as Sevryll and David Locke.   :dry

If you want a good review of this year's DragonCon another podcast I listen to "The Elf and Dwarf" did a great one. They are all about costuming and such. Seems like they had a great time.

I think you guys will have an amazing time.

Yep, I use to listen to them. Mr. O used to frequent the forum here...Thanks for the link. :)

Well, Dave said he wants to go. I told him we could tour Atlanta and look for some Civil War battle grounds. That might have sweetened the deal. Right now he is willing to wear a costume. I didn't even have to sell the idea, I just asked if he'd be willing to wear a Starfleet uniform. He said "sure." :)

So, now we start saving money and planning the trip. Angela said we could get press passes. I wonder how hard that is.

Is anyone else thinking of going in September?

My sister and niece live in Atlanta; perhaps I can convince them to 'geek it up' a little.  ;)  It sounds kind of cool, but I'm not that familiar with Dragoncon.  I guess I have to check out what kinds of guests and events they have there.  Not sure..

Man that does sound like a sweet trip. Like David, I started thinking about all the historical Civil War sights to see in Georgia. I hope you guys are able to promote your show there. Lucky!

Well, our band of Anomalies is busy making plans for Dragon Con. It looks like the rooms are going fast. On the costume front, I'm currently considering going as Ezri Dax from the episode Field of Fire. I posted  some reference photos. I'm talking to a seamstress friend of mine about making a DS9/Nemesis uniform for me and Dave (he said he wanted to wear one). She offered to help a few weeks ago...I'm crossing my fingers that the uniforms don't scare her off. The design looks complicated. If she says she can make it that just leaves me with the eye piece, the spots and the rifle. I think I can manage the hair. Though I think I'll go with a Mirror Ezri hair cut. :)

You would make a good Ezri, Jen.

I think you would make an awesome Ezri Dax, Jen. While the costuming has always been the highlight of geek culture, I think that the Trill makeup would be the most fun to do. At least for me, anyway.

Yeah, Ezri looks a good match for you. Does Dave get a character name or is he simply Starfleet Office #1?

Which branch colours will he get?

He doesn't care what colors he wears. So he'll probably just be Starfleet Officer #1. :)

Angela is talking about going as Counselor Troi. I bought her a pattern for the blue dress Troi wears as a uniform a few years ago for a birthday gift. But she's still considering whether to make and wear that or go for the first season mini skirt. If we go more than one day.  She's going to wear a WOW costume on the second day.

Better put him in 'security yellow' then. He looks built for the part :)

Who gets the higher rank? ;)

Ah...He'd like the security officer thing. If we can find the right color fabric we'll have to do that. He'd probably have the higher rank. Wasn't Ezri only a Lt. Jr. Grade in that episode? I can't remember. :)

The rank looks right from the picture.

So, Dax and her security escort. Sounds like a plan :)

I just talked to my seamstress pal. She said the uniform should be absolutely no problem. Yeah! Now to have measurements taken.

I'm considering how I will be making the rifle. In addition to being a painter, I am also a sculptor. I want this thing to be light weight since I'll be carrying it all day. I'm going to be looking into some foam products or something to sculpt the general shape ...then I may cover it with fiberglass. It will probably be made in sections. I found a VERY cool conceptual drawing of it. If I make this thing, I'll be documenting it for the Anomaly blog and these forums. I think it will be fun.

I'll look very forward to seeing/hearing all about this. Costuming is somethign I've always thought was cool but never had any skill/resources to pull off such a thing.

Found more reference photos of the TR-117 (that's the technical name I guess). Hummm...maybe Dave should be the creepy dead murder that use to be Dax (the one Ezri keeps imagining).

Anyway, here are some cool detail shots and a link to the page where I found them. http://www.phasers.net/2370/tr-116.htm (http://www.phasers.net/2370/tr-116.htm)

Sounds like an awesome project to undertake Jen. Looking forward to following your progress. That rifle doesn't look too easy to replicate.

How cool to have a replica Starfleet Uniform too!

Found a great resource for Star Trek costumers. The design of the forum is bad but the information is awesome. http://startrekuniforms.yuku.com/directory (http://startrekuniforms.yuku.com/directory)
I found the dye recipe for the division colors and the fabric stores where Robert Blackman ordered the wool for First Contact. Apparently they still sell some of it.
