Frank Miller Reinvents "Buck Rogers"
By Garth FranklinFriday, December 19th 2008 8:34am

"The Spirit" director Frank Miller and Odd Lot Entertainment are re-teaming for a new incarnation of the classic sci-fi property "Buck Rogers" says The Hollywood Reporter.

Odd Lot is in negotiations to option the rights to "Rogers" from Nu Image/Millennium. That company will get a credit but won't be involved in day-to-day production.

Miller will write and direct his own big-screen take on the comic serial; while the creator has only begun to sketch ideas, it's expected to be a darker take, with many of Miller's signature visual elements and themes, such as corruption and redemption.

The story of Buck Rogers began life as a comic serial in the late 1920's and early '30's and has seen numerous film and television versions over the years.

Miller's name in connection with the property first sprung up in May, only to be denied. Nu Image/Millennium had planned a limited $40 million budget feature that Flint Dille was penning and would make fun of the limited budget.

The film will likely to be a priority project for Miller, putting the sequel to his "Sin City" on the backburner again. The first reviews of 'Spirit' have begun to emerge and have proven rather scathing.

That's great! Now when are they finally going to do a Doc Savage film? That's what I want to know?

I'm cool with the movie adaptations of his comics, but I'm actually basing my hopes more on his comic writing and scripting style than on films like Sin City.  I liked Sin City; I thought it was cool.  But a lot of the experimental and abstract feel of the film was more due to Rodriguez's interpretation of Miller than to Miller's direct influence. I'm hoping that Buck Rogers will be less "artsy".

I enjoy the dark edge Miller brings to a lot of his books, and the way he sets up scenes is very dynamic.  In fact, his run on Daredevil is my all-time favorite period for the book, and Dark Knight Returns is one of my all-time favorites.
